    Just got this rig passed down from an Elmer KJ4CN and KO4FFA. I haven't got it up and running yet but I had to see it in action! Watching this just made me even more excited for HF operation!!!

    That is the cleanest 430 I have ever seen. It looks absolutely mint! The 430's are workhorses, most of them have had a rough life. I was loaned one from an elmer, it looked like hell but it worked like a charm. 73, W5KVV

    Still have one of these radios, can't see me parting with it, had it years and they work great, they are quite noisy on the RX , i find backing off the RF gain makes a world of difference making the recieve nice and clean

    just getting back into radio after several years inactive,and ran into your video while checking out these older rigs that I would feel more comfortable working and the cost is more in my line. one thing curiosity wise, I looked up both of your qrz pages since you both brought it up in the qso. I knew a fellow with your same last name. I worked with him at Disney for quite a few years. his name is Tony. also from N.Y. Id bet a nickel you guys are related somehow. hi hi. 73 Randy W4atf

    I inherited this radio from my father who bought it from another ham (no owner's manual available). I am wonder how to adjust the output power level on this radio? Or is there no way to do that?

    It depends what mode you would like to broadcast on. Look to the MIC CAR button on the lower left. Turn the MIC button to the right to increase your output broadcast voice power. Turn the CAR sleeve to increase your cw power. Power tops out at about 100 watts. The manual for this radio is available online for free.

    Does your rig have the dedicated Power Supply with it? I'm getting one (TS-430S) with the dedicated Power Supply with it--the PS-430. 73 from K9POW.

    Would you recommend a TS 430 for a first HF rig? I am looking at TS 530's, Yaesu FT 757, and some of the Kenwood solid state rigs (180, 140, etc).

  • @KB2CWN

    @KB2CWN

    Actually, I wouldn't recommend any of those rigs. In my opinion, and excellent first rig that's small, versatile a packs a kick butt signal is a good used Icom 706...I have one and its a power house. Plus I take it along on vacations with my Yaesu QRP rig. I think for a first time ham, its a perfect rig to get your feet wet, before starting to invest in the large top of the line rigs.

    KB2CWN I have looked at those, and they are a bit above my price range. And I wanted a radio with as few menus as possible. Did the 430S have good RX capabilities? I am going to be using at home mostly, for 10, 20, 40, 80, 160m.

    Brad Moran The 430s is an excellent rig with really nice sensitivity. Just be aware, the contacts on band switching do need to be cleaned occasionally with voltage at the antenna connector. Go a google search on the procedure. Its a common problem with those older rigs, as well as changing the memory battery. Good luck!

    +KB2CWN Thanks! I watched the hour long one on soldering the PA board joints, tripping the relays, etc. Seems to be pretty easy. These have good General receive?

  • @KB2CWN

    @KB2CWN

    97irishflyer Can't comment on general receive because never used it on AM broadcast. For general broadcast I have several different receivers. My favorite is my R71a by Icom. But, the receive on the 430 in SSB is excellent.

    How you sintonize the transceiver on a new antenna (without an antenna tuner)? I know (I hear from others) that they transmit on AM on low power (5W) and they see where the SWR is low. There their antenna is cut for. With ts-430s you have only 100W and no possibility to lower the power no? How you control a new antenna? Thank you.

  • @fearlessleader1436

    Just turn down the mic gain. You can transmit with low power.
