WHAT’S WRONG WITH BALLET DIET? The Untold Truth…

Ойын-сауық

What do ballerinas eat? What is the diet of ballerinas? How to eat properly when you are a ballerina? In this video, I would like to destroy a few myths about how ballerinas eat, and that we have our own special diet. Yes, a ballerina must observe a diet, but it is far from as strict as they say. What is the ballerinas' meal plan? The ballerina eats a little, but often. That is, instead of three meals, a ballerina eats 5 times a day, watch this video from beginning to end to know everything about the nutrition of ballerinas.

Hi everyone! I'm going to pop up here to clarify some things: currently I'm recovering from an injury and I'm not exercising at all so this is my meal plan for the time being when I'm not dancing. I hope that I'm going to be back on stage soon and I will film a part two of this video where I'll show what my food looks like when I'm fully working. And also: by no means do I recommend my style of eating to anyone. I’m not a doctor, nor a nutritionist, nor a cook. Do I do something wrong? Maybe. But I just tell you about what I eat 😊 Always thankful for your support and I hope you all have a great day!

I am a dietitian that work me with dancers. Dancers burn about 300 calories per hour of dancing, as a result most dancers tend to under eat resulting in slower metabolism. Most of my dance clients are undernourished. Ideally individuals should eat at their maintenance calories plus the calories burned. That will put most dancers anywhere from 2200-4000 calories a day. It may sound like a lot but research shows that when active dancers generally do ok with this. When they increase there calories they notice they have more energy and feel better. A good rule for protein is double your kg weight in grams would be a good goal. Some may have problems with this so I would start with half that and work your way up. So a 50kg dancer would start at 50g of protein and gradually change increase it to 100g a day. It’s important not only for your muscles but your organs. Malnutrition effects the organs more than the muscles so try to increase your protein and calories if you struggle to eat enough.

I've seen a number of the ballet dancers what they at least say they eat in a day. Usually they insist they eat "a lot" because they have to dance but what they think is "a lot" is influenced by a lifelime of trying to get a ballet body so is actually not enough for anyone else trying to do a day of dancing. They are small because they worked at it and they are exhausted in away I do not think they would be if they were not always undereating. All the muscle they do not actively use gets weeded away resulting in the long and lean look they are after. Hormones in the too thin women are also not good, resulting in brittle bones. I just wish they'd just lay it all out there.

Eating, drinking and fueling our bodies in a good way is such an important part of our day to day lives. Whenever I eat unhealthy I absolutely notice and feel a change in my overall mood and feel much more tired and exhaust more easily. I totally love to start the day with greek yoghurt, fresh fruits and granola with a sprinkle of honey. Whenever I do I feel much more energetic and ready to take on a long and busy day. Love your content and wish you and your family all the best for the upcoming holidays. Kind greetings from Holland 🇱🇺🙏

As someone who's no ballerina and could stand to lose some weight and eat better, this paint an encouraging a picture of healthy, joyful, creative eating. The prominence of comfort foods defined by protein and fat is reassuring. It surprises me that you can eat that way while not exerting yourself. Maybe I could reduce my portion sizes and sugar intake with this many cheese-and-fancy-yogurt-related things a in my life. Whatever it would or wouldn't do for me, at least this feels maintainable. I'd love you to discus how ballerina's lose weight, if and when necessary, while keeping their bodies strong, safe, satisfied and healthy.

Hi everyone! I am a professional ballerina and food blogger/ youtuber and I wanted to give you my humble opinion: first of all, Maria obviously eats little (compared with other non dancers or dancers) and does it consciously, that could explain why she is thin (it could also be her body type!). She follows this “diet” in order to maintain the body/shape she chooses to have, according to her criterias, to be as beautiful as she chooses to be and perform the best she can. If this is her choice, you could try to understand it. She is a very well-known dancer who is apreciated for her body and lines, and for her level of performance. She is probably trying to keep it the way it is. If Maria ate more, she would probably be more “performant” (even though in dance, performance not only relies on how much you eat, but also on how well you feel about your own body, on self esteem and confidence), her body would probably change as well (she would gain muscle and some fat), and not that I would see anything wrong about it (I like dancers of all shapes), but that would have to be her own choice. She might feel great and happy, perform well and love her body the way it is. If this diet allows her to be healthy and get her regular period, feel energetic enough to perform at her level and improve, then let her eat what she likes! I hope that if this is not the case, she is aware of it and changes her diet to become healthy again. And please, don’t be as stupid as to use this video as a reference: this is only what suits HER and her body in this particular situation. Not everyone can feel fulfilled and energetic eating this food and you have to adapt you eating to your own rules. Secondly, I think she is talking about what she eats in “a day” (not everyday) during a time of long term injury, and as a ballet dancer I assure you that if you intend to maintain your exact weight (on the long term) while you don’t train as much as usual, you have to reduce your calorie intake (and that must be what she is doing in this video). Thirdly, the title of the video does not reflect the real content of it because it might have been chosen in order to improve the click through rate (considering her level of fame she might have a community manager who decides which title would generate the most clicks). And finally, you know, ballet dancers who are thin probably follow a diet, that is usual. It does not necessarily mean that they have an eating disorder. Don’t you organize your schedule? And you are not obsessive about it or have OCD right? Well Maria organizes her meals. Just as other athletes do as well, the only difference is that a ballet dancer such as Maria is thin and decides to remain so. I don’t know her personnaly, but I give her the benefit of the doubt: if she was sick, anorexic or orthorexic, she would reach for help, or ask her doctor’s advice. Be nice on the social medias, Cheers everyone 🫶🏻

Thanks Maria for sharing this, I think this is the most anticipated video by many. you are very courageous, and turning the comments section on as well. But I guess, food is a lifestyle choice, so we shouldn’t be pinpointing whether Maria should eat more or less comparing to our own lifestyle choices. She’s just sharing her own diet, if she hasn’t shared this, no one will be commenting on the food she ate and life will go on as normal for her. Furthermore, she has been taking advices for her food choices from nutritionists, colleagues etc, maybe her meals have been planned out for her by nutritionist we all never know. And she could be eating lesser/more than usual because of her schedule. Anyway, thank you Maria for sharing this, it really satisfies our curiosity!

My diet needs to be very balanced with almost cero sugar, salt, red meat, etc. I stopped having a good diet and my bones hurt, last year I got sick with a stomach bacteria and had to get back to a very strict diet. As far as I can tell the topic of the video is ,’What I eat in a day as a ballet dancer.’ It’s not , ‘What a professional ballet dancer needs to eat according to a nutritionist. ‘ Don’t expect perfection people. There is no claim that this is what everyone or anyone SHOULD eat. Also: Ballet and other extreme sports that require certain looks might not always be the healthiest life style. Professional ballet in stage form is not something anyone does for their health. It takes a toll on the human body and that’s why people don’t train at that level for 50,60 years. People’s bodies can perform at this level for a number of years and then they have to reduce the intensity and hopefully they can continue with a healthy amount of exercise for the rest of their lives.

yeah, 100%. the issue at hand, i think, is that most people really don't understand how big the pressure is at the theater, and looong before that, at school. these ballet dancers don't even have a chance at a normal diet. they start worrying about their bodies at the age of 10, basically. eating disorders are so common in this world, it's a wonder how ballet schools are still legal. it's great that Maria tries to eat healthy, and quite honestly, she eats a lot compared to other ballet dancers (based on their similar videos). carbs are painfully missing from her diet but other than that she has nutrient-rich meals so good for her. she does her best with the options she has.

Impressionable is exactly the right word. Maria's physique is becoming the new 'standard' and any videos showing what she eats will be emulated meticulously by a percentage of her audience, some may even decide they have to eat less than her. I'm glad she clarified that this is her diet while not dancing, but share your concern. I will say though, as a former anorexic, it is a relief to see that she is not afraid of high calorie foods like cheese, sugar and oil. Hopefully young impressionable people will see that too; a ballerina can eat such things. Her comment about milk was a bit alarming, certainly suggestive of the culture of her profession. I've heard a Russian ballerina talk about how she was bullied for her size as a student and accused of drinking milk. I think they called her 'milkblood'. It's all very sad.

The level of concern trolling toward women like Maria is so gross. I was reading on a ballet forum that some people didn't think Wendy Whelan should be allowed to be Associate Artistic Director of the NYC Ballet because she was too thin. Like dancers would just catch an ED from looking at her. Imagine taking an artist like Wheland and boiling her accomplishments down to that. And it's always women tearing her down.

This is the best “what I eat in a day” video I’ve seen…. I’ve seen other videos by dancers and have been upset by how little they eat, especially protein… I think the diet is great and has a lot of nutrition… I’m not sure why people want her to eat more while not being active…People can only fit so much in at a time:) She did say she would eat more when active and adds snacks as needed… She started the day with two types of cheese which have fat and protein, oatmeal which also has protein, and she ate plenty of carbs and wasn’t shy about adding honey, sugar, and fruit… She also had a large piece of salmon and plenty of salad for lunch, and even added juice… She had three types of protein for dinner and added fruit. The yogurt and egg also have fat… It may be a little more plain than some people like but I don’t see how this is under nourishing oneself as long as you are eating when hungry and until satisfied… Definitely add more snacks as needed or another meal if working out all day, but if you aren’t hungry you shouldn’t be told to force more food down… That’s silly… Maybe also cultural differences as most people where I live eat a large dinner… I dislike a lot of food late in the day so it makes sense to me… I also eat less than she does but am about 7 inches shorter :) 😊

It's better for sustained metabolism, gentle digestion and energy release to eat smaller meals and regular nutrient dense snacks throughout the day. Larger meals cause an insulin spike and drop that would create fatigue at a time of the day when she needs to be utilising that energy.

As an athlete like Maria, you have to eat like that to stay strong, to maintain. My current age: 75 And im really glad i ate like that, with plenty of milk in my diet...like 6 - 7 qts a week. I feel like this is a very accurate diet for someone who is a dancer when they’re not training extensively… it’s a solid balance of complex carbs, protein, veg, and fruits! I ate very similarly when I was dancing (omg like 20 years ago). It’s also extremely common for lunch to be the largest meal of the day, so I can see what a light dinner is ideal. Also that yogurt and mango will be super filling, too! Well done!

Well I am not a ballerina though I practice ballet and other daily sport activities and yes it is healthier and easier to eat small meals throughout the day thus enabling a fast digestion and the pursue of sport activities, whatever, without having a heavy belly. It may feel at times "restrictive" but it is a choice of balancing one's life with the right diet. Water is effectively very important throughout the day as rightly mentioned by Maria. The only remark I can make when seeing the video is that there is no rice/potatoes or pasta in addition to green vegetable/salad. Anyway it is good to note that Maria tries to get a balanced eating diet.

I eat very similar to you, and LOVE salmon with a salad. A couple of years ago I learnt that something that's very good for muscle function is potassium. Two things that contain a lot of potassium is avocado and mango - which you obviously already eat. But even if I do different kind of salads, when I eat salmon I started to do a salad with avocado, mango and some edamame beans/soy beans (for extra protein), and then I cover it all with crema di balsamico. This mix tastes SO good with the salmon! From now on I will add some sesame seeds though. So thanks for the tip!

Sometimes I look at skeletal ballerinas and I think there’s no way they are getting a period. I could be wrong, but I feel like that’s a good gage. If your period is shut off for months or years from dance and diet, your body is going into in fight or flight survival mode. Even if you are extremely muscular and strong.

Thank you Maria for sharing what you eat in a day. Please excuse all of the unwelcome input in the comments. It’s very rude considering you are doing this voluntarily and in your own time. It’s very generous of you and people should be more respectful. What you eat is a matter for you and your doctor/coach only. Obviously you’re not going to take the unsolicited advice of random strangers on the internet! I feel compelled to apologize for those comments as it’s rather embarrassing 🙈. Still, as I say, thank you for this. It was most interesting. I enjoy hearing about all aspects of your life, not just your training and performance as such. As far as my favorite fruit? I would have to agree and say mango, although any of the stone fruits (apricots, peaches etc) when they are at their best are also just divine! ❤❤❤

I'm not a doctor or a dietician, but as far as I can see Maria is eating a variety of foods from all the food groups. She eats complex carbs, proteins, a variety of fruits and vegetables, seeds, oil. Somebody on this thread estimated the amount daily as 1200 calories? I think she is eating a variety of foods, but little of them. She needs to be very thin for her work on the Mariinsky stage - this is in part due to the preference of its Artistic Director for a certain physique - ultra long limbed and extremely thin. Dancers in other companies also have to be thin, but maybe not that thin. It's a real problem. The stage, as also the television/video etc, makes people look heavier than they actually are, so dancers try to be thinner than the average person. Also, the heavier the person, the more stress on joints. I don't know ... I think she is doing the best she can do eat healthily at the weight she needs to be for the Mariinsky stage but it seems very little.

  • @serenosotello736

    @serenosotello736

She can't put weight on anywhere, not only on her legs. Ballet dancers need to be a little underweight to look good on stage. But, what looks very thin is actually the body type that dancers usually have. Very small frame is what makes her look so thin. Also, she needs to be lifted while male dancers are tired. Khoreva is not short, so bones are heavy, muscles not as heavy, but heavy, fat is not heavy, just unnecessary.

i am very impressed with your diet. i have noticed a lot of ballet dancers do not get enough protein and just load up on carbs. but your diet is very balanced and has good proteins and healthy fats. also, cheese is a very good whole food-high protein, great enzymes, unprocessed. i am a lover of cheese as well-my favorite is raw manchego. also, cottage cheese is the best. and the little things in the pomegranate fruit are called “aryls” 😉
