What's Up With These Flight Ratings??

Спорт

The DX Valkyrie was the first driver I ever bought and at the time the Halo series wasn't even made yet. Both of those two plastic types have two different flights; the DX definitely being the most understable of the two.
For the price of ONE Halo Valkyrie you can buy three DX Valks. It comes down to what you are personally looking for in the disc and how much you are willing to spend.

    First disc I bought was a DX Valk as well! Was very dismayed when on one of my first throws it landed on the asphalt and got a big nick. Still took me a long time to figure out that there were other plastics. ETA: Don't give up on the Halo Valk. It will be a great disc for a whole lot longer than the DX Valk will. Just break it in some more and it'll probably be one of your favorite discs in your bag.

    I started playing 16 months ago and the first driver that worked for me was a new DX Viking. I got a pile of used beat-up discs from a kid and there was a DX Viking and a DX Valkyrie in the mix. I thought the Valk was interesting so I got a new one. A few months later I think I managed to buy the last three champion Vikings in North America and I also got a couple Champ Valks and what might be the replacement disc for the Viking, a Pro Savant and a Halo Savant. Anyhow, I was working on my form and within a month I went from getting that S-turn flat release flight, to must hyzer-flip or they turn over, flights from all of them. Sometimes it works to evolve your throw with the discs.

So getting a val is harder in halo to justify. It's the tbirds that are more interesting as they are enjoying the halo treatment to the sable side...... Aaron I mention this to you a while back, but when you get a chance take both of those Valkyries and place them on your kitchen countertop touching nose to nose👍. Now crouch down until to your eye is now eye level with the countertop / discs, take notice how the Halo Valkyrie wing is a 1/64 to 1/32 higher than the DX Valkyrie. Now to be clear here I'm taking about the nose of the disc only (not the overall height of the disc) it's called the PLH aka (parting line height) basically where the top and bottom parts of the mold come together and sometimes leave flashing or a slight protrusion or white line behind. In simple terms most DX wide rim drivers suffer from a saggy wing😁 this happens in the cool-down stage when the plastic is still somewhat soft. Basically you can think of it as premium plastic takes a little blue pill that prevents a saggy wing otherwise resulting in a understable flight 😆🤣. But seriously very small differences in wing height with the same disc in different plastics make huge huge differences in flight ✌️.

    So with this being known, don't you think Innova needs to adjust their flight ratings based on the plastic type?

  • @flipflat4814

    @flipflat4814

    Жыл бұрын

    @@chainraiderdiscgolf I think they should do adjustments on all the different plastics, however it's not really that simple, especially with Pro and DX plastic's. Those two plastics in particular can mold up considerably different from one batch to the next 👍. Star and Champion plastics tend to be more consistent from one run to the next but that's not always the case. Innova has already assigned different flight numbers with some of models but only on a few I believe. For example the Tern in Star, Eco-Star and Pro plastic is rated a 12/6/-3/2 and the Champion plastic it's rated 12/6/-2/2. The Innova Champion Shryke is another example it's labeled a 13/6/-2/-2, and in Pro and G-Star plastic it's printed a 13/6/-3/2. I can't remember the Star rating for the Shryke offhand 🤔 I think it's a -3 turn also if I remember correctly. The only way the truly 100% prevent inconsistencies would be astronomically expensive for a manufacturer. The best solution would be to leave the disc in the mold for the curing process until room-temperature is achieved. However that would tie up a $20,000 mold up for several hours. As far as I know Innova still uses U.S. made molds which are absurdly expensive at around $20,000 each. I suppose you can have dozens of molds made in Taipei for around $2500 to $5000 each and have them sitting idle during a curing process. But you're not really saving anyting because of the amount of cycle from a mold made in Taipei isn't even close to a USA made mold. Every hot cold cycle, takes life off of that mold life, so by allowing a disc to set up isn't cost-effective and it's just sitting there not making units. By not keeping that mold at operating temperature you're shorting yourself of its life expectancy. Right now the Latitude 64 and the new Discmania factory have achieved the closest thing to a consistent perfect product.

    I have a Halo Wraith and let me tell you I HATED it at first . I'm fairly new to the sport so back when I bought it I thought it might fly like the Pro plastic one I threw, well just like your video it was total opposite. My first throw might as well been with a Ballista because that thing took off to the right like it was nobodies business haha. Im left handed by the way. I even tried anhyzers to try and force it to flex but it barely did anything. But I paid $25 for the damned thing so I was determined to figure it out so I started beating it in by throwing it straight into the ground and even putting it in the dryer for 5 minutes at a time and bending it around and trying to speed up the process .It helped and definitely made a nice difference. My arm speed still isn't that great but if I put some anhyzer on it it does flex and I can control it most of the time as long as the wind isnt crazy. If there is wind I dont even take it out of my bag. With all that said I dont think I will be buying anymore Halo discs, or really anymore plastics comparable like Opto or Champion because for some reason I can only control a few discs in those plastics. I have come to prefer plastics like ESP, Fuzion ,Royal , etc. etc. simply because they seem to fly just right straight off the shelf and I feel much more control with them . The stability of those plastics seems much stronger and wont go nuts over a simple gust of wind . Maybe when I start throwing with more velocity I will revisit all the discs Ive taken out of my bag, but sadly they are nothing but paper weights at this moment lol. I still have my DX Leopard, I love that disc still because it does what I want and when that disc is trash im spending another $9 for a new one haha.

    I have two Pro plastic Wraiths and Terns; the Pro plastic is my favorite that Innova makes. It seems to fly true to their flight ratings. Someone commented on here how Innova's flight ratings aren't always true to the disc and plastic type and I would have to agree. I have two Fuzion plastic DD Trespasses and those discs are gold! Out of the box they preformed and there was no need to beat them in.... As you progress and your form and arm speed build you will be able to work certain discs the way they are supposed to fly. Took me awhile to finally get a nice S line flight out of my Star Destroyer. After using it for many different shots it now drifts harder to the right as compared to my new one that I cycled in. Once again though, Innova needs to revisit their flight ratings based off of the average player in my opinion. DX plastic is way different than Halo plastic and maybe they should adjust their numbers.... Bang for the buck yeah, $9 isn't bad at all for a disc that works for you. I can handle losing a disc when I paid $9 for it compared to $35.

  • @JAK1981

    @JAK1981

    Absolutely agree about the flight ratings of certain plastics and its a problem with all companies . They really need to update that because in a sense its false advertisement when you think about it. For instance I have 2 Ballistas , one came in a starter pack I bought and its just the basic retro plastic, the other I bought is an opto version . Now I know a beginner with a Ballista makes little sense, BUT I use them for a very specific purpose for those shots that bend hardcore to the right around trees or other obstacles and are not that far in total distance. Literally all I do is throw them flat and they do the work and its perfect for me as far as that . With that said I can actually get my retro Ballista to flex with anhyzer , its not a totally great shot but I can still get it out there. Now with the Opto Ballista I feel like i need to put every ounce of my body into the throw and it will hardly stay any kind of straight with anhyzer and it will immediately still go hard right . My go to drivers are my Fuzion Escape and my new Royal Grace . The flights on those are just beautiful and are so dependable and consistent . The Fuzion alone really improved my game and helped me better my form and understand hyzer flips. I also have a Lucid Air Escape but again the flight is seriously different from the Fuzion. My Fuzion i can get some great S line flights and I FINALLY threw a 350ft shot with it. My Lucid Air Escape I use only when I need a hard turnover , I can almost throw a backhand roller with it without having to do much lol. So yes extreme different flight characteristics. I may not be able to throw far but I absolutely love this game, its so much fun and challenging. Eventually ill get better arm speed, I notice I get better when I aim for consistency . I quit trying to muscle my discs down the fairway and learning to just let them fly. Work in progress lol.

    What you are experiencing is amateur ability with professional quality equipment. You buying and playing Halo plastic for $25 to $30 a disc is equivalent to buying an Official NFL football for $100 to play catch in the backyard. These are the discs used by professional athletes. DX and Pro plastics are a great fit for the recreational player. The DX flies better for you because it is better suited for your ability. The video was a great demonstration of this. I agree with everything you said (great comment) but a clarification to your NFL ball comparison. I agree that Halo plastic is not very helpful for a beginner, sure, but that's not true for Champion, Star or GStar just to be clear even though they are more expensive. I would rather recommend a Star Sidewinder over a DX Valkyrie to a beginner if money is not a huge concern since most players (beginners and pros) prefer their throwing discs in premium plastic and it'll stay consistent for much longer... Or actually I would recommend something like a Manta but you get the point. With that addition I think your comment summed up all my thoughts as well ⭐

    @@bobbobby2236 Listen guy. A disc will always be more overstable in colder conditions, a fresh disc will also be more overstable, armspeed matters very much if you cant reach the discspeed precondition(think of discspeed as a prerequisite for unlocking the disc’s characteristics, especially any understability). Its not hard to factor all of this in, you’ll play better if you incorporate these factors in your understanding of the game. I got a Halo aviar as I have been bagging dx aviars for about 25yrs. What a joke! Not even close to the same flight path and slick as sh*t when wet. New Dx classic aviar flies as the numbers suggest. Flat AF with almost no fade. The dx beats into a slight turn but still flat fade. The Halo seems to have less glide, zero turn and more like a +2 fade. Honestly, it shoudlnt even be called an aviar, as its even noticeably larger in diameter. Maybe after YEARS, a halo aviar would beat into being close to the numbers, but why bother? I dont cycle discs, I buy the flight I want from new. You take time to beat in a disc and then lose it promptly. OR, you beat it in and it quickly goes too far and is useless. Bag the DX and its right from the start. I prefer a wizard BY FAR, if I wanted a slightly overstable putter. A beat wizard flies like a new aviar classic, just a hair less glide. Super soft wizard, dx classic aviar, elevation koi... the big trio from stable to understable. The koi being a ground magnet and fun catch disk, tho miserable when wet and to keep clean. The pure soft, could easily replace the wizard, IF you wanted more distance from the putter.

    Innova really needs to redo their flight ratings especially, with the Halo plastic. I'm like you, I putt with a DX Aviar and buy discs to do what they are meant to do immediately. The interceptor is my goto, when Im 100' or so and can't take ground play. It seems to not care if I overthrow it, it only goes so far and then fades/dives hard for me. It replaced the roc for me, on those mid power upshots. The roc (after 20 yrs), seems to be easily overthrown and watch it go bye bye. I've begun to cycle out the beaded discs in my bag. For now, the roc is gone and I use the interceptor or matrix in its place. I also toss the binx, but its more like a 6 speed and flat. Nothing special, but it can take a tree. I didnt have any issue with throwing floppies, but a lot of people do. I think it has to do with how smooth your throw is from the start. If you like to flip the disc or change angle mid swing, the floppies will be your enemy. A lot of flick throwers cant throw a binx for shit, as they like to adjust flight angle mid swing/pull.
