What’s The Food Like at Marine Corps Bootcamp

Ойын-сауық

The posting on this channel are my own and don’t represent the Marine Corps’ positions or opinions. My topics are based mostly on personal experience and may vary for others joining the Marine Corps.
In today’s video, I cover topics mostly based on what kind of food you can expect to receive at Marine Corps Bootcamp, MCT and on military bases.

    Simeon Kurosky hey, great videos. They bring back some memories for sure. In another comment thread on this video someone asked what a scribe does and I did the best I could to answer that but if you don’t mind giving a current description (I was at PI 17 years ago) I’m sure that might be more helpful. I’m looking forward to you next video!

    I loved the chow at boot camp. Matter of fact, the only thing I could not stand that I ate at the chow hall no kidding; pop tarts. I remember grabbing a package once and I was only able to eat half of one and it was just discusting due to the lack of sugar I had been consuming for so long.

    I joined the Marines way back in 1988 and went to Parris Island. I remember the food being good. Breakfast was always the best. The joke back then was if there were no seagulls on the parade deck then we knew chicken was being served at dinner. Lol. I have eaten chow from all the branches except for the coast guard, which is probably the same as the Navy chow I would imagine. I was stationed on an aircraft carrier for my first duty as security forces so I know all about Navy chow onboard ship. When the ship first leaves port and when it is resupplied the chow is good but as the time goes and things get used up is when you see the decline in the food. As far as the Army and Air Force goes, I'm torn between which is better. They were both top notch chow. Hard to believe it has been 32 years already. Damn I miss the Corps. Semper Fi!!!

    Make friends with the scribe and get on early or late chow, late being better than early, if you don’t do anything stupid they generally won’t mess with you. Also you should find out what the legal food requirements are in different circumstances. When I was in, on base you were due 1 hot and 2 cold meals per day. In the field, you will almost always get that but you could get as little as 1 MRE per day. Basically the amount of food you get for the crucible. Those amounts are important in the fleet too since you get paid for meals (Per diem, BAS, etc) when the government can’t provide them.

  • @xslickrickx2103

    @xslickrickx2103

    4 жыл бұрын

    josh connolly at boot camp there are several billets or jobs that are assigned to recruits. They include the guide, squad leaders, the scribe, Early and late chow (kind of a special fire watch), house mouse and I might be missing a few. The scribe is responsible for things like making the fire watch roster at the direction of the DIs and to a lesser degree the guide and squad leaders. Keeping track and mailing out going recruit mail at the direction of and with the assistance of the DIs along with other things that need to be assigned or recorded. It’s probably the best gig you can have in boot camp. You would never see a scribe with watch in the middle of sleep hrs unless the was some reason like they want to do their own laundry (when I was at boot there was one washer and dryer in the squad bay head for items that could not go out to the cleaners with the platoons laundry, not sure if it’s still that way though). Here’s a link to a post where people have described it better than I ever would. The only thing I would add is in 2003 they were only giving meritorious promotions to the guide (the one who is guide at graduation, the guide position will change hands a few times along the way). It seems that they had changed that policy by the time some of these posts were made) www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?56506-What-is-a-Scribe

    I went to boot camp in 1997. I barely made weight. I was very thin before I went in. I was on double rations during chow time. What that means is I got double portions of food. It didn't matter though because I had 5 min to eat it. I'm 6'1 and weighed like 145 before boot camp. I actually put on 23 pounds after boot camp. I basically filled out and I was ripped from head to toe.

One tip, you seem to be aiming at civilians, so loosen up on the jargon because they won't have a clue what you're talking about. I did that for the longest time and got the "nod & smilers" constantly who'd go behind my back and ask someone what the hell I was talking about. My grandfather used to nickname me FUBAR. We drank tap water from lead pipes and literally once had a recruit piss themselves while we were working on the floor. We had to eat with our hands our box-chow with the recruits urine on our fingers. Boot camp is hilarious and if you have a tough spine, it's some of the most fun you can have on this planet.

    So, I couldn't eat anything before I joined. Nothing sat well with me At all, like, not even bread. Something about the endless exercise does something to your digestive system. To this day, I can eat whatever I want and it sits perfectly with me. No real explanation, but two decades of digestive issues disappeared in the first week there. Might happen to you. If that doesn't happen, we ate mostly chicken, fish and pork at the chow hall. Box chow we ate out in the field or after class, ect. was like, chicken, salami, and some very-occasional beef. Lots of chicken. We honestly ate little dark meat. Less than 10 meals if I remember.

    What food? There's no damn food. The first time we went to the mess hall. We got our food, sat down and started eating. The DI's started in on us, saying "who told you to eat? Get up now and get out on the deck." I had taken two bites of whatever was on my tray. Just as well anyway it tasted like card board.
