What's the difference between the Triumph Bonneville T120 and the T100?

What's the difference between the Triumph Bonneville T120 and the T100? - Several people have asked me which I'd rather own, a new Triumph Bonneville T100 or the bigger T120. I'm thrilled that Triumph have loaned me a brand new T120 for long term review so at last I can get to know the bike and compare it with the T100 which is my favourite Bonneville to date. In this first video I look at the differences between the two machines...

It is a lovely bit of kit Dave, very sad that I had to take it back to the Triumph factory today - trip only made slightly sweeter by having to rescue my Panigale from there (being held hostage as collateral against the T120)...my long term review should be posted Wednesday August the 2nd - impressive this upload schedule I have eh? :0)

Hey TMF, another great video and one close to my heart as I've had this exact model for 6 months now. I moved from a CB650F and have to say the T120 is incredible. I do a round commute of 56 miles five days a week and have been to Wales & back for a long Saturday ride. The T120 handles extremely well and you can even throw her into the bends if so inclined. On a different note I've just received my Custom Ear-guards (and yes I did get my TMF 10% discount). Would thoroughly recommend them to anyone (check out TMF's earguard video). Thankyou again sir for another most enjoyable review!

We dont have the day time driving lights here in the US, but I did opt to have the one touch cruise control button which is an excellent addition, can be used in third gear and upwards and disengaged through the brakes, throttle or clutch. Perhaps worthy of a TMF review? Cheers :-)

You concisely hit all of the high points, thanks! As a T120 owner I'd only add that any potential purchaser of the T100 or T120 should consider real-world gas mileage. Owners are consistently reporting that the T120 gets 10-15 MPG better than the T100. The two bikes have identical tank capacities. Most owners are going to gas up after using about three gallons. That means that you get 30-45 more miles to each tank with the T120. This difference is counter intuitive, I know. I believe it's due to the lazy, unstressed nature of the T120's engine. You have all of the power you want, with much more available when wanted or needed, which isn't often.

I've found the same on a few cars in the past, the small, economical model needs to be worked harder so uses more fuel. I'm selling my weekend toy car and getting a T120 and as long as it beats the cars 18mpg I'm happy.

I've had mine a year now and covered 6k miles. I had to change to the comfort seat. It's a fraction higher as well as more comfortable. (I'm 6ft) I got the bike to slow me down so no screen and cruise control which is really useful to me. Not slow though, it keeps up with anything I've met on a A/B road. I like the fact that you can get the pegs down when being playful. The USB charges my phone for navigation, headlight is great at night, controls all light and predictable. Seems easy on tyres and chains. My only minor crumble is the chrome around the clocks and the clock glass reflecting badly. Oh and a £150 decat works wonders! More seat of the pants torque and great sound.

Triumph has really improved the Bonneville. I love all about this bike, except...the spoke wheels..they look good, but I'd rather have trouble free cast wheels, that's what I'm used to and I don't know anything about spoke wheels, just that I've heard they can give problems. I'm on the road daily, commuting, don't see many motorcycles here in St Louis, Missouri. This past weekend I saw dozens of Harleys parked at a bar lol!

I've got a 2009 SE model which I really like - with a few caveats. I'm glad to see that Triumph got rid of those butt ugly indicator lights and tail light. That was one of my first mods! The 120 looks like a real beauty, love the paint job. The seat looks comfy, after an hour or two my SE has me looking for a cafe and a good stretch and I'm only 5' 6". Twin discs up front, sweet! Since I own a T120 I can vouch for the excellent power and gearbox, smooth as silk. Amazing. Great bike for moving in and out of traffic, very quick and easy. What I dislike is the seating. Though it works for many, not for me. I even purchased the comfort seat and that wasn't much better. I had a guy modify the stock seat for me and I've not been able to get sufficient time in the saddle to determine if there is a significant improvement. The handlebars need to be about 1" higher as I find my wrists and hands get sore. I've tested that theory with washers and it made a huge different. Am looking for a more permanent solution that doesn't look too dumb. Now, that being said, I am a particular bloke when it comes to seating and handlebar placement so don't take my needs to be the normal. Overall, the T120 ranks up there as a top favorite of mine (I've owned a bunch of bikes over the years). Try using the Rain mode when traffic is stop and go, it helps calm down the throttle response (just a tip). TMF, thanks for this great comparison, glad I bought the T120! Cheers!

That 1200cc psychological barrier is surely there. That's a BIG engine. The T100 was not available when I bought my T120. If it had been I'd have surely bought a T100, believing it adequate to my needs. The T120's power has proven to be so smooth, friendly, and linear that I'm very glad that things worked out as they did. If you're considering the new T100, I urge you take a very good look at the T120. You won't be disappointed with it. It even gets better gas mileage than the T100.

Not forgetting that Triumph is a whole new company to the original, If Triumph had had a machine with such quality detail, they may have survived. They failed, as all the others did, because they were sticks in the mud, thinking they were so good, they didn't need to change. I really love this machine, it looks, sounds and goes great. I suspect about the only place that is not so good, is the ride by wire. You would expect BMW to have that system down pat but a friend has an 800 and has had considerable trouble with the ride by wire. Beautiful bike. Nice review. But all that said, the welded flange around the bottom of the fuel tank is absolutely unsightly. Why hasn’t Triumph revised this design flaw by now? I have a 2004 Bonneville that I purchased brand new, and the tank flange has always been a visual sticking point for me.

Mike Forrester Agreed! I’ve been looking for an adhesive rubber or plastic strip (U shaped) to cover the overly-large flange on the fuel tank to see if it would improve the looks. So far I’ve found one in a chrome finish, which might look OK on some of the “modern classic” series of Triumphs, but wouldn’t look right on my Street Twin- it’s got to be black! I haven’t been able to find anything that looks suitable. If anyone knows of a product that might work, please let me know- thanks!

Nice one, and about time MF - I've banged on about my T120 long enough - they are quite simply beautiful and brilliant. You've even got the right colours! It took me a while, but moving the top part of your torso to "muscle" it through corners I find exhilarating and satisfying. If you find any faults I will be amazed - I've had mine 9 months and can't think of any. Regards as ever, Jon.

Fair point - I know this was a problem on a few T120's. I'd forgotten that in the first few weeks my bike had slightly squeaky front brakes. Every time I clean it I use Muc Off disc brake cleaner which may have helped. I also did some hard braking after bedding the brakes in initially. Now done 1300 miles and no squeaky brakes at all! I don't know what mileage yours has done?

To vere off on a different topic, you have had a Triumph Street Triple for years; perhaps you can do a review of the 2018 Street Triple R. I find the paper specs to be interesting. Same bike as mine. Love the T120. Its only a pure toy though - don't plan any ultra long journey's on it. Find it nice on the road but if you have a gravel driveway you have to be careful moving it about as it is pretty weighty. Mine is only used in the rain if I accidentally get caught in a shower. I give it an all over spray of that protective silicone every week and clean it forensically. I find it very relaxing and therapeutic cleaning it. Can't imagine I would feel the same with a BMW as there is practically no chrome. All parts can easily be reached by hand to clean which is great.

You're in the enviable position of having extensive experience with both the T100 and the T120, where most owners had to make their choice based only on a short demo ride. The T100 was not yet available when I bought my T120. Had it been, I would probably have chosen the T100 as being adequate for my needs. I'd have never experienced the T120's smooth, linear, and entirely usable power. Handling is excellent, and braking is a two finger affair. Gas mileage is great, too; I'm averaging a consistent 63-65 miles per gallon. There appears to be no mileage penalty for having all of that extra power on tap.

However, I just wanted to take a ride and be comfortable in 85 degree heat without my underwear choking my bits! I have tried Moto Skivies which work great but still slide up and choke the bits albeit a little less so. I have ordered Draggin liners plus their shirt. I will let you know if they work. Interesting comparison; were I in the market now I'd almost certainly opt for the 120. But I have a T100 already; '02 (Centenary Edition), so it's an 800cc motor. About the only real gripe not readily fixable with a relatively inexpensive aftermarket bit is the single front brake; they went too cheap there in not even giving you the option to mount one! I've fitted a centerstand (Triumph accessory), performance mufflers (Triumph accessory) and an aftermarket igniter that raises the rev limit to 8200. The front brake is a lot better with EBC HH sintered pads, but I'd love to mount a second disc if there were just a place to put it! I don't really have a problem with the stock saddle; it's a bit on the hard side but I have done a 500 mile day with no trouble. And I have on occasion tried to shift up from 5th, so a 6th would be nice but not absolutely necessary.

I work for emergency services and am an advanced driver. I have been looking at the street scrambler until I sat on a T120. When I sat on the SS it felt good and how I expected it to but as soon as I sat on the T120 it just felt perfect. Obviously this is still all before passing my test and a test ride. Mister Flyer, I trust your judgement and would like to ask your opinion on two matters. First, is the T120 overgeared? That is to say, is the gearing too tall? I have the feeling that, if so, Euro compliance has a lot to do with it. Second, not if, but *when* the time comes where I'd like to turn up the wick just a bit in the twisties, is the handling and steering really as ponderous as some have said? I'm asking you because your evaluations are pretty darned honest. I know it's not made for sportbike antics, but let's face it....it's a motorbike, and it's a Triumph, and that carries with it certain responsibilities.

Makes sense to me that you changed your opinion about the effect of the weight of the T-120 on "flickability" compared to the T-100 that you stated in the "First Impressions" video about two months earlier. After all the weight difference is only about 5% or 24 pounds. When you add a rider the % is even less. Hi there. In your honest opinion, if you was given this triumph or say a Kawasaki Z900rs FOC which one would you go for? Loving every one of your reviews. Forgot to say! Bikes have lots of things going for them and you could talk about bikes all day long! but as for the naked experience which one would you jump on on a hot summers day? Looking forward to reading your reply. So it’s Triumph or Kawasaki? Be honest now. ☺️

Hi mate, nice review. I may have a question for you since you seem to have riden both T100 and T120 : do you think that the T100 is a reliable bike even if you go on highway, and if you want to do some road trip ? (not mentioning the fact that you have to put bags on it, just want to know if this is a bike where you can go 200 km at a 130KM/h speed easily....)

@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes, I don't need masses of power. I also by some miracle actually passed Mod 2 the other day ! I had a look at the specs of the T120, it's quite a heavy beast. I'm currently leaning heavily towards the 2019 Street Twin, not so much because of the extra 10BHP, more the comments I've read that said the brakes are better and it's something like 26 Kg lighter. I was also considering a Honda CB650R or Suzuki SV650 but like most bikes the pillion seat is up in the clouds ! ( The Suzuki appeals to my bank balance ) I went to a Triumph dealer (before I'd passed Mod 2) and my wife preferred sitting on a Bonneville T120 and Street Twin over a Triumph Triple that has a pillion seat "up in the clouds". ( Also Triple's currently look probably a bit too quick for a newbie like me ) I really like the classic 1950s to 60s Triumph look, and flatter seat for a pillion. The choice seems to be coming down to a new 2019 Street Twin or second hand one . Do you know if the brakes are really that much better ? Tweaking around changing callipers on an earlier Street Twin and other things could soon eat up any cost saving over a new 2019 Street Twin , and I might out grow the 55 BHP quicker than I think ... I'm also not a fan of too much cleaning, all the chrome and spoked wheels on the Bonneville looks like lots of Sunday afternoons cleaning rather than riding :)

KarlosH I bought a (new) 2018 Street Twin last year- with the dealer’s discount and a Triumph promotional rebate it was over $1500.00 less than the 2019’s! And, as I really prefer the wheels on the 2016-2018 Street Twins and the white tank with the red & blue stripes (and a couple other details) over the 2019s, it was an easy decision. With that price difference, I can (and probably will) buy the Free Spirit Brembo brake conversion and TEC cam & still be ahead of what a 2019 would have cost (not including slightly cheaper insurance for a 1 yr. older model bike...). I WOULD like to ride a 2019/2020 to feel what the differences are, but I have no regrets. It’s far from being my first bike, but suits me very well. I would have no reservations about recommending a Street Twin over the T120 as your next step from a 125... Best of luck to you & stay safe out there- the drivers are only getting worse!

I currently own a Bonnie 2016 T100 air cooled. I had thought of "upgrading" to the T120 because I wanted the extra power and torque. Trouble is, the T100 which is truly a marvelous bike in it's own right also has a 4.2 gallon fuel tank (at least on the air cooled T100's) so if I made the switch to the T120 I would be taking a considerable hit in the riding range ( currently160-170) miles between fill ups!! Ugghh I feel so conflicted!!....lol
