Yeah, I understand that point. But from a scientific point of view: Could it not be interesting to see the differences between a sentient plant and a sentient fungus in some kind of media? The fungus could be more focused on literally spreading through mycelium and spores, literally forming a sentient network. Also, sentient fungi could increase drastically in size (and maybe strength) when they come into contact with water. Plants on the other hand could be more like conservative individuals and less of a hive mind. The Ents from The Lord Of The Rings are actually quite a good example of what plants with a long lifespan could be like.

That is an interesting idea for conflict, tho: Ivern is about harmony and Zyra is more the predatory type, so it makes sense they'd clash. This is an argument Maokai would probably also want to get in on since he doesn't have a very kind view towards humanity in general.

Teen Idle The "Voice of the Forest" or "Mother Nature" is mostly associated with good intentions and then we have Zyra who takes advantage of that cliche to lurk people and manipulate them.

Personally I think Zyra suffers from the same problem as Kai'sa of Riot modellers/character designers wanting to make a sexy lady but the lore not really matching that. That said I think you could quite easily fix the problem while keeping both distinct from Evelynn and keeping the basic look of the model. Have there be sort of duality that Zyra both wants to reproduce and due the transformation needs to do it the animal way hence the sexiness but also she wants to feed and needs to do that the plant way (or so she thinks) hence the wines and stuff and use the conflict as basis for her character (sure there's other LoL characters that similar but could work), it doesn't even have to be a split personality just 2 goals that are at odds with each other.

Kai'Sa should have been the Samus of League - the badass hunter who has spent so much time fighting alien creatures that she has become an expert. Instead, she has 0 personality in game. All these years we spent waiting for Kassadin's daughter, and she's just dropped into the game. She looks like a supermodel showing off some weird new fashion instead of someone who has reverted to a predatory way of life in order to survive on the boundaries between Runeterra and the Void.

But does Zyra need to reproduce like an animal? I mean, she is constantly spitting out seeds, so it doesn't seem necessary. And her flesh might be plants(conflicting answers on that one), so it might not even be possible.

I feel like the era Zyra came out it was sort of an unlicensed Smash Bros. for MOBAS. Like a lot of characters that were out at the time just seemed like adjusted versions of popular characters from other media. Nautilus looks like a Big daddy, Zyra looks like Poison Ivy, Rammus looks like a Spiny Koopa, Shen was Scorpion and Sub-zero and so on. They even had skins that referenced their likeness.

I thought that in Zyra's lore it was chronological. She took control of the woman's body and then finding that this woman had magic, she utilised the magic to create a human like body. Don't know, just an idea, love the channel, keep it up

Osun Her core gameplay shouldn't be changed, but they will have to fix the problem with a plant based dps vs a spell based burst that she has. She was reworked originally to get her away from the burst and put more emphasis on the plants that are central to her theme, but now she is right back there as the plants don't live long enough to do much plenty of times. And based on her lore of slowly strangling people to death, the poke/dps version fits better than a sudden death by plants.

cathalh6 Non canon skins don't have anything to do with the champion design tho. For example the new Pool Party Gank Plank. Could you imagine a ruthless pirate captain to grill steaks and shoot around with a water pistol? Good designed champs can have bad skins and in Zyras case, bad designed champs can have good skins.

I've been playing so much Zyra lately. This is the perfect time to watch this.

Honestely, Zyra's sexiness is part of her character now, which is eh but fine. But, if they would make a VGU for her, they should highlit her plant and animal features, like green skin, leafy like hair, make her leaf like crown her ears and make her sexy appearance a bait, like how a orchid copys a female insect to fool males.

you've absolutely nailed every problem I have with Zyras design and all the cool things I wish they COULD have done with her.

It is an evolutionary advantage for plants to be “attractive” because it means that they will bring more pollinators to them. If Zyra used the woman’s memories to create a human shaped vessel she would have probably created something that according to the woman’s memories is deemed attractive to humans.

I was going to say the same thing. What little lore there is specifically states that Zyra created the human-shaped vessel "using the woman's memories," whatever that might mean. Your explanation makes sense. However, I see Skyen's point. If we're being honest, the design lead probably just wanted her to look sexy because they thought it'd be more appealing to the demographic. They can rationalize it however they want with the lore after the fact. In this case, I don't think it necessarily hurts the character design though, other than the fact that it does make her very similar to Poison Ivy in look.

That could be a good way of going about it. I highly doubt riot would go about doing that though, as it would step into evelyn's territory. Looking attractive to draw her prey in is eve's core concept.

Zyra's lore right now is mosty in game. She was born from a catastrophy, and is a Wrath Of Nature. Update was around 7 mounths ago, and Necrit has it covered. 15:36 - some when here.

I have a friend who mains zyra, and i'm pretty sure that doesn't matter how better she could be as a character, if she doesn't look hot, he would probably complain. I think most of the player base would.

Quite honestly I didn't like how the plant monster had boob's and "revealing" foliage. She's a plant, she knows that getting the most coverage would be best for photosynthesis. And right now there is a rework idea on r/zyramains that would have her covered up by a bulb half the time, so to the mains I don't think we would care. If all the "I want to play a sexy lady" people stopped playing her, that just leaves the "I want to play Zyra" people. Which is a good thing. A dyrad who protects a jungle viciously would make her seem villainous, while not the "pure evil" thing she has right now.

I don't really think that most of the community would complain. I know there is allways this meme about Butts and Tits and Thighs and hips in lol when it comes to female champions, but there are quite a lot of designs that show that it's really just a meme and not reality. Most notibly Jinx or Taliyah or Vi. Non of them is oversexualized and all of them have fully flashed out identities with proper backstory and all three of them are popular and liked champions. Even Annie became more popular as Riot updated her lore and gave her a theme. I know that there are some players who don't give a shit about lore and character designs and only look for feminine properties, but lots of players are really interested in the lore. And if you happen to like a champion ingame, but finding out that his lore is minimalistic and bad and her design being flat, really sucks. I fell in love with the idea of Zyra, a plant based mage that wants to grow, to spread and to conquer everything and with her (prerework) skillset. But her design really isn't remarkable. And her lore is just.. there kinda is no lore.

This is by far the best video youve done and youve done alot of good. And the dryad art at around 20 mins awsome. So terrifying

Interesting take. As usual, I appreciate how thought out these types of videos are and all of the evidence you present. I think you hit the nail on the head. The sex appeal concept makes her too similar to Eve. Someone pointed out down in the comments that the consuming-all-things concept is simply Tahm Kench. If they do rework her, I feel like they should go more fungal than plant with jittery/twitchy/zombie-like movement and her kit revolves around spreading spores that slowly expands over the ground and does tick by tick damage to enemies in the zone and like... an infect ability that does delayed damage similar to Zilean's bombs. But....... I also realize that changes her core concept too outrageously, even for a rework.

Same as with what I said back in the Viktor video, where I say they should make Creator Vickor the base skin and it'll fix a lot of problems with his look and core theme about becoming robotic. Same thing with Zyra, They just need to expand her lore by a few paragraphs and give her birth location in the Shadow Isles, and swap her normal Zyra to Traditional Zyra and make "Haunted Zyra" her base model and look.

They really need to remake her original skin and make her theme more coherent. Rito REALLY fcked up when it came to how they made the character. I really like your ideas concerning "body-horror" plant person or a person under overgrowth. It would be cool if Rito remade her into one of those ideas.

As an illustration/character design student I could watch your stuff all day, I seriously want to hear you talk about character design on almost anything because its entertaining and educational for me. Great stuff, if you ever get into teaching, I'm taking your course lol!

I wish her gameplay was more about surviving, rather than... damaging and rooting people. When you play her you don't feel like you're in danger or that you'd be rather weak as a plant. You don't feel like a plant. This is probably because she's so "perfect". She's almost more perfect than a human, in the way she looks, moves and talks. It would be much more interesting if she was imperfect, like uneaven footing as she walks or moving in a way that makes you think it's dificult for her. A plant shouldn't be moving at all, so make her look like she's strugling with it. I'm imagining her walking almost like a zombie. We have two tree based characters, Maokai and Ivern. They move very much like humans, certainly don't look like humans, and I can understand them moving like humans because they are made out of wood. The wood works sort of like our structured bones and therefor it works for them to move like us. But Zyra is plant and vines. She could try her best to create something that resebles bones but she'd most likely fail and still be rather soft and bent. Something that confuses me is her use for breasts as she's... a plant. She doesn't feed her baby plants with boob acid, does she? If her breast size was reduced it would make sense to her still growing them for the sake of looking human. But since she doesn't have use for them other than astetics, she wouldn't have to put much growing effort into them. She has highheels, for unknown reasons, wich could also be removed as they probably just make it harder for her to move around on the uneaven ground such as the forest. You ask why she's so thin and my only logical answer to that is that she's hunting for prey and doesn't come along food too often as she's already killed everything. I do agree that it makes her look weak and lacks defense but she's not meant to be tanky, as meantioned earlier she's a weak plant trying to survive. I might just be saying the same things as you but I felt like putting it out in my own way. I feel like I could come up with a whole rework consept for Zyra but I don't have all the time in the world to write it here. Hope my thoughts were interesting at least.

To be fair to Riot, Poison Ivy looks more like a woman while Zyra looks more like a plant.

You could add massive amounts of bulk to her hair by turning it into vines. Hell you could draw from Yunalesca in FFX and basically make a giant fuck off plant monster attached to her hair that does the moving part leaving her almost levitating off the ground due to the sheer force of the plant creature attached to her hair like vines. There's quite a bit of possibilities here.

I feel like maokai/galio is a good execution on the last line of "now its within my grasp" like with galio hes like i got this big ol body its a joy 2 move cause a plant is a stationery object so the freedom of movement music be exhilarating for them. Maokai too i was once a tree that cant get my roots out to stop thrm from stomping the flowers but now that i can im gonna bash my barky body all over them. So zyras want for things too hopefully just fall into her spikey thorns shes like wait i can go and hunt now but it was also giving the conflict of what life is too her now cause shes somewhat more in danger cause she can get one shot by ahris q like ahris not just gonna Q a random plant shes gonna hit the moving thing. So zyra learns more about the things she traps and feeds on understanding life more so. But yeah a plant's understanding of a human body seems like a difficult task to manage. Lets see what direction riot eventually take

I think that a quick-fix that solves many problems at once very easily is to add literally two sentences to the lore about her "preying" on animals as a plant, looking beautiful and then snapping shut and strangling them, and then change her face to have a terryfying grin with huge sharp thorns for teeth, which would be visible only when one is so close to the sexy plant lady that it's too late.

The bad part IS she gained memories from her magical sorceress IF you reverse the role the plant tries to eat a magical woman but instead the magical woman uses her magic to save herself but instead merges herself with the ancient plant. The two share memories But the magic woman didn't take into account the ancient plant having a massive amounts of memories taking over her mind drowning her in centuries of existence.

i got an idea for zyra : for me what riot should do, is just make her effect by the magic and cataclysm that is the rune war and because of it, zyra in order to survive find a solution that is to take over a human body (riot can make what ever story on how she find a human to begin with idc and what happen). but after she taken over the body she woke up unfamiliar to her surrounding ,who is she ,why does she exist, what happen to her. she has the body of a human and plant, the faint memories of the human that she taken over, the overwhelming hunger inside her. she has emotion and feeling but the plant nature of her always creeping in her mind and she's wander the world to find someone or something that would give her answer .i know that this story is kinda similar to ahri but riot can figure something out to make them different assuming they use this story that i doubt they will. well that is my take on what zyra should be but who knows riot can be a pain to get through and make a point with , but in the end i would really want this to be her actual story .(ps im not reply to whoever commenting accept for skyen to lazy to start any war in this comment)

I think the first sin of Zyra is that "it" is referred to and shown to be a she at all turning points. Fundamentally, Zyra is a plant, and yes Plants often have genders but zyra doesnt seem to need it. In her color story she somehow creates a copy of herself using a bud(thats how its seemed to me, like she is sending her seedlings into the world to find homes, devour and spread to create her perfect world, zyras plants reproduce by eating, not by pollinating) Zyra is not a she, it is an it, a plant, fundamentally not human no matter if she looks like one in her current state. She doesnt need to be sexy at all, she doesnt even need to be a she. Its a plant

Fun fact, in the DC Super Hero Girls version, besides everyone being in high school so they aren't overly sexualized, Poison Ivy is very much clothed, but is still one of the most feminine designs compared to Wonder Woman or some others.

I know u don't usually talk about movies, but i think it would be cool if u did even a short discussion on the upcmoming, movie: Alita Battle Angel. Based on a manga of the same name from 1990. Would love to hesr your take on how they chose to realise the manga's style in live action as well as your thoughts on the character designs.

Cordyceps is probably the fungus that you're thinking of with ants, alternatively, there is a parasite that affects snails where it develops inside the snail after ingestion, then after development, tunnels into the eyestalks of the snail where it hosts egg sacs with more of the parasite, has the snail then climb out in the open, expands and pulsated inside the eyes to attract birds to come and eat it (whilst inside the eyestalks), since birds see the big eyes, think its a worm, eat the eyestalks (snail usually survives and regenerates) where the egg sac then develops inside the bird (parasite is called Leucochloridium btw if anyone is morbidly interested). This could be something that a potentially reworked Zyra could tap into, a forest parasite of sorts, can still encorporate the "sexy flashy" stuff reminiscient of poison ivy to lure in more hosts, still sexy, just with a different purpose underneath along with delving into maybe more of the stuff you had shown, plant zombies/decaying druids/infected plant people, idk just some stuff I was thinking about with this video, used to play zyra a decent bit before her rework, just get dissapointed when I see her now lol, wish they would update her.

If I was put in charge of her, first thing I'd do is make a story about her getting her form by trial and error. Originally starting off as a vaguely human shaped plant monster she changes her form to people don't spot her coming from a mile away for what she is.

Just as you host-controlling plant, I immediately googled images of the 'Infected' from 'The Last of Us.' I love playing Zyra but I've always been bothered by her design, so if Riot redesigned her to embody something like that tree humanoid (18:57) or a cordyceps host that would be amazing. Hell they could even imply in her lore that she has lived through a list of previous host ranging from humans, animals, Vastayans (so her visual attraction is relative to the host species'). Her species could have been invasive to Runetera and so damage the ecosystem resulting in the near eradication of her kind, and since shes a plant she wouldn't necessarily have to care if she is destroying everything because all she knows is 'consume and spread'.

I can already guess that if/when Riot rework and remodel Zyra, they won't even bother going down the *far* more interesting path of making her a plant given human-sentience and exploring all of those horizons like you suggested, and they'll just make her a sexy witch that uses nature magic. Maybe give her a dress made out of flowers or something.

I just looked after watching your video and her lore has been updated. I now do like it a lot more than before and it still keeps aspects of her old lore. But it still could explain why her new form is so sexualized rather than relying on the reader to infer things in their own. And perhaps instead of following the path of Zrya seeing the world as unkind to its world she can have her drive to go on just to survive like plants do. How they don’t think much like us and just grow because they feel a massive need to survive. If you understand what I’m saying.

The fungus you're searching for is the Cordyceps! Hence the design of the infected in The Last of Us would have been relevant to show in this video i think, they are a really nice representation of what a human zombified by a shroom parasite would look like!

I realized shes basically plant Kai'sa, had a really good theme to go (in her case) silent hill nurse type of sexy and creepy but is only creepy instead without uncanny valley appeal

She needs a cinematic for us to know where she comes from and why is she here. I main her thus I love everything about her, but I agree with you.

My interpretation would be that since she as a plant was something that needed to attract prey to consume she would want to make her human body to be attractive. She'd know what would be generally attractive in a human from the mins of the same woman she got the other knowledge from. Whether she in her human form needs to fool potential mates to be eaten doesn't matter, it could just as well be a force of habit.

All the talk about Corina Veraza as a possible champion made me come back to Zyra. I feel like Zyra could almost be a mutated version of Corina if they really wanna retcon Zyra's backstory to something that makes more sense. Like something happens when Caitlyn confronts Corina and she is believed to be dead, only for her to cling to life and somehow mutate herself with plant DNA to survive, and then go on to become a personal villain for Caitlyn Then again that would literally JUST be Poison Ivy so idk.

Zyra is one of my favorite characters of LOL. When I saw her slash art I felt in love. But I have to agree with you in some points. I think I would suggest them to keep her pretty like that, I like the way she looks honestly, but her story would be center in revenge. Like, she was a woman mudered by men in the florest, a plant saw that "grant her wish" idk, and now she has to kill humans guys t hat is why she has to be pretty like that. I know, super cliche, just like pike, or Evelyn, but I would feel really sad if my zyra would became a more plant character. I don't even like the zombie skin that she has. Idk, I agree with you in so many ways but I love the way zyra looks

When I first saw Zyra, I thought she was a mix of Poison Ivy and The Queen of Blades from Starcraft II. Basically a Queen of Plants that only wants plants life to live. Plant Zerg Rush. Sadly, even that's too good for good ole rito. I'm only here because they are selling a figure made by Infinity Studio and I was just wondering why does Zyra have *that* shape if she's a plant girl or something. Now I know. Thanks :D

With the release of the Runeterra map and the fact that Kumungu is basically empty, it's obvious that all the champs from there that have connections to that,will get their lore reworked like Zyra and Nidalee cayse god knows,they both desperately need it. I think that if you can justify Zyra WANTING to be human, you can keep the design. I think that if she clings like a parasite to the human sorceress and gets shunned by the rest of the plants of Kumungu, since they can be spirits now. I think that way the design and maybe have her personality be more of a curious type rather than an Aatrox-like spread-and-kill kinda deal.

I can't wait for the Ahri or Jinx Episodes. Or Star Guardian.

I think the only reason on why she looks so hot is because the sorceress looked hot or something like that. If she wants a human form, which she would know because of the memories and such, to travel to these lands where humans are, it would make sense to transform your vessel into something that she knows would work: the body of the sorceress. Although I have no idea why her skin looks so.. skin like, but everything else looks clearly like clothing, to depict sexual appeal. And secondly, that would only work if she willingly transformed.

I was twelve minutes into the video where TB Skyen constantly wondered about why that would be, so I commented my little theory. And he literally speaks about it the next second I click on play again, making my comment completely irrelevant.

Firstly we need to remember the mom is pregnant hence her near immediate reaction being regret, we’re seeing one side of the story and it’s pretty easy to see the other, neither of them are wrong I don’t think a boy misses his mom, his mom is caught up well being a mom to her other kids and probably thought he was well off, this doesn’t look like something OP has communicated before. I really don’t think anyone had any Ill intent and about the grandparents and jack they probably took it the wrong way as just “I’m just not good enough am I?” And if the mom is thinking having another kid is a mistake after that of course that’s gonna set the family off. I think it’s best for everyone to just talk it out and communicate more clearly nobody had Ill intent and I think the only people who said bad things was kinda the rest of the family cause while I understand, it’s invalidating his feelings

In slight defense of your rant against the sexualisation - the way I interpreted the little lore tidbit about creating your own body made it look like she modelled the body after the sorceress. It could very well be that this is genuinely just the body of the sorceress with a different biological composition and a different mind, meaning that the sexy part could very well be reminiscent of the sorceress. On the other hand, the same applies to her if she took over the sorceress - she'd probably take over the body entirely but she likely wouldn't place as high of a value on clothing and the such, as these are not paramount to survival. Additionally, if we go via the PI route, we could infer that Zyra's species hunted via trapping - considering plants are not usually the fastest moving organisms, that doesn't seem unreasonable to me. The lore even states that the reason Zyra's plant-magic is so...potent now, was that she discovered it basically in her dying breath. So no "but magic plants growing magically fast" either. Now, the real question that's up here is why the hell the sorceress had the figure to begin with. I'd genuinely say that Zyra as a plant is completely innocent towards the accusation of being sexualised, but the sorceress she consumed is most definitely somebody that would have been sexy. And the real question is what the sorceress would have looked like in her own mind. Then again, even from that point you could make an argument that by reading the sorceress' mind, the plant would have been able to infer what is advantageous when trying to lure in more people - kind of like Evelynn does now. I agree though that Zyra definitely suffers from the "pin-up girl" problem League had in ye olde days, considering the first not-pin-up girl we got (iirc) was Jinx, and that only counts because she is flat chested, I guess. I don't agree on the whole "it's not justifiable" part though, because at least in my mind, there's points you can raise to legitimately defend this standpoint of the plant being sexy.

I've always just gone with the cop-out answer of "having magic makes you attractive", because there's no real "adult (or near) human caster" we have that's not. I mean, let's say you get magic. Is your first action A) go hunting for everyone who's ever slighted you. B) Test the limits of your newfound powers. C) Use it to punish those who looked down on you. or D) Work with a little bit of B and C by making yourself hot. Mind you, I'm not saying this is a particularly _good_ answer, just a possible one. I will concede the point that I may be putting more thought into this than the designers did at the time. It just lets me handwave things in my own head.

My favorite plant-based character concept is the Zhou, which is a character race in a table-top RPG called Fragged. The Zhou aren't really plants, but blobs that consume literally any biological material to convert it into a shell. They've evolved intelligence and discovered that its better to eat plants as they are easily renewable

I feel like making her a Vastaya would solve the femininity issue. She could also be a member of the Black Rose, because they have a lot of wierd mages who let their magic corrupt their form like Elise or Cassiopiea.
