You know what'd be a good interaction in lore? Qiyana vs Sylas. Just think about it. Qiyana is literally everything Sylas hates, but she is also an image of what Sylas will likely end up with. To elaborate: Sylas is a Mage who was oppressed and enchained by Demacia, so he started a Mage Civil Uprising as soon as he broke out of prison. His goal is to remove lords and ladies from power, and make Demacia "a people's state", if you will. In other words, he wants to remove power from the arrogant nobility and in turn empower the oppressed masses. On one hand, Qiyana is everything Sylas hates, a high born lady who thinks that the world revolved around her and that the masses only exist to serve her and boost her ego. On the other hand, Qiyana only managed to gain her position of power due to being a Mage, as Elementalists are treated with prestige in Ixtal. What I'm saying is, Sylas is a man who wants to take down dictators and uplift the oppressed, while Qiyana is an example of what would happen if Mages were the ones doing the dictators. That, and Qiyana's own bloated ego would surely be taken down a peg if she saw someone just "yoink" her powers from her. .

How to Fix Qiyana: COMMIT TO A THEME. I swear everything "boring" about her is because no single angle or aspect was committed to. In the attempt at making her "well rounded," they did what they did to Kayle and Morgana-- sanded away their edges and made them more stale. Is she tribal? Then venture out farther in your design and make her unique! It doesn't have to be meso-american, but she shouldn't look like many of the other characters in League. Give her unique tattoos that glow with the corresponding element she uses. Give her hair that doesn't look like a Demacian noble. I get that her makeup and her eye colour are supposed to represent her elements, so play that up! If you want to see over-the-top done well, just watch RuPaul's Drag Race and see how some things can look so unusual and yet so beautiful. I would say that the crux of her lore could be summarised as such: A young princess grows upset because, in spite of her exceptional talents, nine older sisters stand between her and the throne. Her story deals with themes of neglect, frustration, and ambition. So PLAY ON THOSE THEMES. Help us believe that she is largely ignored by her parents. Personally, if I were the writers, I would have given her younger siblings as well. The baby of the group is notoriously favoured, and I think of well-known stories like The Little Mermaid. It would make more sense for her to be a generic middle child. If she has been showing incredible talent since age seven, then why are her parents ignoring her? Maybe there is something taboo about her, or the circumstances of her birth, or even something as benign as a cultural belief that the number 10 is unlucky or evil? Maybe she has a birthmark that her parents are ashamed of, or there was some celestial event that made them believe she is flawed in some way? It is not believable that an extremely talented, extremely pretty baby of the family would be ignored by her parents. So either cut out the theme of neglect, or give us reason to believe it. Her frustration is good, but it seems short-lived. She goes from motivated by frustration to motivated by her newfound addiction to respect and admiration. So either commit to the bit and give us Rise of the Shield Hero levels of frustration, or set that thematic bit aside. So far she seems to be getting credit for the things she does, and she seems to be getting the respect and admiration she desires. So if you want us to believe the frustration, show us some instances of her NOT getting credit for her accomplishments. Ambition is the final theme I picked up on, and I think this one is her most prevalent. It runs through her entire story, and I think it only falters in regards to showing us how far she is willing to go to pursue this dream. Yes she is skilled, but does she work hard? Does she forge alliances or make some compromises? Her sister, Mara, only conceded prefecture to her because the village was leveled by Piltovans and Qiyana was the only one strong enough to defend it. Maybe that's all the Qiyana is supposed to be. A powerhouse who thinks highly of herself just because she is the strongest. But I'd like to see her fleshed out more, and given more substance. I want them to push her further, and not be afraid to give her questionable traits.

I agree with so many of your points here, and looking at the concept art for Qiyana there was so much room for elements to stay to make her more visually interesting. I like her attitude, and I like her weapon since it opens up for alot of interesting pose work and battle styles. But other than that I really feel like they could've done more with her like you said.

I love the glowing tattoos idea is awesome and amazing . The reason I didn't like qiyana is that they didn't give us a reason to sympathize with her or believe that she was this neglected it makes her look more as a spoiled brat

I dont know how it could be improved or developed but maybe they do want to go for the spoiled child role and because of this when she doesn't get credit for absolutely everything she becomes angry as this is how she had been treated as she was the youngest. Not a big lore person btw just a potential observation

@@justno5356 Oh come on, its not like she is the only champion that has an unrealistic weapon. Both Riven and Garen have swords that are enormous and way too heavy, Leonas shield is massive, Rells pike is way too big etc

Dunno if TB saw it, but Qiyana's original concept was super unique and cool (her skin was made of an alloy that could absorb "elements", and changed her weapon based on that). Shame we got the final design instead.

King Toasty seriously what the fuck riot this was so much better she’s so boring now a race made out of organic metals that can tap into elemental magic sounds so much more interesting and it would give more credence once piltover started to raid their villages fuck

What I additionally love about Qiyanas Animations is how she treats each element. As you said in the Video the animation for her throwing her rock q is her slinging it and because rocks are really heavy she has to move with the weapon and use a lot of physical strength in order to throw it. It really looks like someone who is not very strong but has a highly trained technique to throw heavy things as in her entire body moves very coordinatet in order to throw something heavy. She slings it OVER her head. Meanwhile her Ice/Grass Q both are thrown UNDER her head especially Ice where she does like a mini backflip showing that Ice/water is less heavy and she is able to move her body into the exact opposite direction of her weapon but still increasing the strength put behind it you know as in her backflip flows into the move like water. and Grass where she does like this small ducking thing I dont know how to explain it but she kinda goes in a crouching position as someone would do If they want to hide in Tall Grass , which is so amazing because she already starts doing it in the Q animation not when the grass trail is already laid out like it blends in so smoothly. In the end, I love this Champion. I know there is a lot of legitimate critisism about her and In the comments here I have seen also lots of good points that I agree with ( for example that she has no tattoos that show shes from Ixtal or like in the video that she has no Military badges or decor) but I really really like her design, like If I made a champion from my mind it feels like it would be almost exactly like Qiyana. As in looks I like the more modern and not really plain but rather subtle design of her dress. Because she cares more about being a great fighter rather than looking like a king or queen. She wants this dress so it does not hinder her in battle but still wants the gold armrings and especially the crown to feed her ego. She wants to stick out but does not want to be unable to properly fight due to her dress, because thats what she excells in she knows that the thing differenciating her from her sisters is not her looks but rather her abilities to fight. Then I like the looks of her hair but thats purely preference. And body shape I also like the pear shape and think that it fits as in she works with her lower body alot and does not need a lot of upper body strengh. About her personality I really like this bitchy attitude and that she is super confident because thats a very apparent flaw of hers that she has almost no empathy and thinks too highly of herself. But when you look deeper into it it makes sense why she craves this attention so much because having 9 sisters that get more attention than you simply because they are older must be very frustrating and then finding out you are extremely more talented than them and are able to do all these crazy things must be infuriating because yes that the parents do not aknowledge her makes no sense thats the whole point, it makes no sense why her parents are neglecting her so much and thats driving her crazy. TL:DR I really really really like Qiyana even though there is a lot of legit critisism

I agree with everything you have said so far, but I miss one big criticism I have with her design. Riot wants us to believe they are intrudcing a new region that is supposed to be south american... but nothing except the vaguely aztec sounding name is really telling me anything south amerian at all. I don't even have that big of a problem if they would mix up the cultures. Like making Mayan, Aztec and Inca into one, even tho there are shittons of kilometers (this is how you measure distance the cool way) between them. But nothing about the art, her clothing, the way she fights, her weapon or even her story (Prefects? Like in the roman empire?) tells me anything but a fantasy medieval gaslight magic take on her cultural origin

I think the background makes the splash art worse. An explosion? Really?

If they wanted to emphasize her legs, they should have also done that in her splash art like they did with Irelia. Also, instead of giving her black leggings and a bright top, she should have had a bright leggings or bare skin to emphasize the strength of them. I'm not really impressed with her dainty arms when she is supposed to wield a weapon that large. She should have more muscle all around. Real dancers have muscle. I get that they probably didn't want her to have too much muscle because they wanted her to appear young, but it just seems lazy. The hairstyle makes her look young enough already.

One of the many reasons I like your videos is that you always strive to do something interesting with the character discussion. hearing you point out how well her animation and how more unique her backstory is, than what her character design seems to be, really helped make this character a bit more likeable to me. Also if you think the punch-out blind was super cool look up be blind speedrun of symphony of the night. Blew my goddamn mind!!

The LoL lore team really needs to work more closely with the character designers and animators. I don't read the lore at all because it never feels connected to the actual champion in game. Varus probably being the most egregious example of this off the top of my head. It honestly feels like the lore team must not even work in the same city as the rest of the teams.

What would have been really interesting but also make sense for her would be if she was flat chested, but still "thicc" in her thighs as she is right now for the safe/sexy quota that LoL goes with for its character designs. The reason why I say this is because they are going with the "gymnast" look for her with the hula-hoop and spandex/tights part of her design and in real life it is often the case that, because of their intense training, most young olympic gymnasts are extremely underdeveloped. Not only would this be a more accurate design to the theme they were going with but still keeping her "attractive enough", but it would also be a much more unique character design, as, tbh, there really isn't that prominent of a "young girl genius" type that also is physically fit and domineering. Usually when they are young girl geniuses, they are portrayed as either geeky with glasses or overly childish, wearing frilly costumes. But here you would have a young girl genius trying to act more mature and dress more mature as overcompensation, but her physic would show that she's still just a kid, so much so that she has actually pushed herself to being severely underdeveloped with all her training. I think that's much more compelling and fits a certain niche of a female fantasy that league doesn't really have right now. And we all know that a character having less of a chest does nothing in terms of how attractive she is, as seen by how fucking popular Jinx is, so you couldn't even argue that getting rid of her bust size would be a risk. AAAAAnnnyyyyyywayyyyyyyy, great video as always TB. I never get tired hearing your thoughts on character designs.

There's a saying in martial arts: "There are some weapons where pretty much all the training focuses on making sure it doesn't kill you before your opponent has a chance to." Personally, I would have added 'tiger like' scars along her forearms, and straight up given her armored legs.

I feel the first minute is skyen illustrating she's that boring and bland that he runs off on to talk about other subjects 😂

qiyanas animations are just so amazing to watch shes definitely one of the most beautifully animated characters

Btw, to add some actual input, I am glad that Qiyana has some redeemable qualities. Honestly, her weapon was the most interesting part about her to me, so I'm glad it got some nice touches in the animations (which are, ultimately, the most important aspect of her design while you're actually playing). I wish it had some lore as you said, but eh- perhaps it's better off left to headcanon than rito's hands :^) One thing I feel is sometimes left unsaid in your videos is how the mechanics aspect of a character's gameplay complements their design/concept, which is something I find Riot does amazingly well most of the time (examples like Bard, Zoe, Aurelion Sol and Xayah/Rakan come to mind). It's probably early to say for Qiyana at this point, but I have high hopes~

Just a heads up, Rioter Reav3 confirmed on reddit that Qiyana is currently 20 years old in the lore.

Riot: you know, I bet we can write a better story for Daenerys...

oh thank you for discussing her in isolation. I feel like even with as many waifu-with-weapon type champs we have, Qiyana still stands out with the sheer quality and expressiveness of her animations and all the creative stuff they're able to do with her weapon and power set. it's just unfortunate that this got drowned out in the first vid about her.

I can definitely see that! I think the problem is that Azula was cutthroat, calm, and calculating. I think by trying to make Qiyana "make sense" they tried to put external explanations for everything. I am about to lay out why Azula is so much better as a character: Azula was always skilled, but she worked consistently to hone her skills and was extremely critical of herself (one hair out of place, not good enough). Qiyana was just born with extreme skills and uses her abilities to get recognition and fame. Azula came to be the heir of the throne because of her and her father's cunning. Careful political strategising paved her way, and she crafted her reputation as a tactician and leader. Qiyana wanted to surpass her insane number of older sisters, so she challenges them to a dual and thinks that should be sufficient to now be the heir to the throne. Her parents disagree, and she can't imagine why. Azula's influence stemmed not only from her own skills, but from her ability to select an elite few leaders and utilise them in key ways. Mei and Ty Lee were her close friends through childhood, but they also served as her closest advisors. She led with an iron fist and made her generals fear and respect her cunning ways. Qiyana inspired people to follow her because of her immense strength and skill with the elements, but has shown no leadership qualities and has made no effort to establish advisors and leaders among her followers. In the end, I think the crux of this situation is that Qiyana doesn't feel satisfying as a character because the writers are trying to get us to sympathise with her while also trying to portray her as a badass and an arrogant teen. What Azula received, she worked for. Yes, she started out by already being talented, but she took advantage of those talents to network within the nobility and hone her skills even further. Qiyana is pretty because she's just pretty. Azula is pretty because of meticulous care and attention to detail (which, spoilers, made it all the more significant when she cut her hair uneven and her makeup was running, signalling severe mental strain). Qiyana is the best elementalist in the world just because she is. Azula is one of the greatest firebenders in the world because she took her talents and honed them, taking advantage of every resource her royal name could afford for her. Qiyana is sassy and says she is your superior. Azula just walks into the room and everyone knows she is your superior. Maybe that's why I like Camille so much-- she embodies the same core aesthetic of Azula in spite of not being royalty. Qiyana is like an attempt towards that direction, but it falls flat.

Azula was interesting. Qiyana is... well, she's there.

The kinda misplaced crown reminds me when little girls want to be important and recognized, they put crowns on their head, without really coordinating it with the rest of their clothes.

TB: I got 99 problems but the animation ain’t one.

That lil kick motion you emphasized was the same exact thing I keyed in on when I watched her stuff. I enjoy this air she exudes with all her moves and I am so happy you highlighted all of this in detail. Even with someone as unlikable as her. Her character oozing out of all her actions makes me love her.

Qiyana in lore: Mage Qiyana in game: Physical Damage assassin Also, why is her bicep smaller than her forearm?

My favorite parts of these videos are when Skyen gets excited over animations, no matter how small. It truly is a lot of work and I think it’s great he appreciates them as much as he does.

I have a problem now that I heard Qiyana's and Ixtal lore. Piltover is in the north side of the river, while Zaun is in the south side of the river, right above Ixtal. Zaun is all about poison, contamination, corruption of nature, etc. They also make lots of contracts with Noxus. Piltover for some reason cross Zaun's territory into the jungle and start mining and such (yeah, surely Piltover won't mine into Noxus territory, so they looked elsewhere). Ixtal should be at least a little more concerned Zaun's contamination than with what Piltover is doing. Also, I feel like Piltover and Zaun should change places in the map.

Piltover and Zaun are more or less one city, at least they used to be. Zaun is located on the lower levels of canyons, while Piltover is on the upper levels. Bc the development of them are so different (Piltover being more "clean", while Zaun doesnt have any restrictions on Research and being more "dirty" as a result) they are considered two different cities which exist in a state of symbiosis

Zaun is less "south" than it is "below" Piltover. Sure, techinacally the district is closer to Ixtal than Piltover is, but Zaun is basically a canion that goes miles deep inside the upper city. The reason why Piltover is the one advancing through the jungle is because Piltover is the city with the most money and political dominance that does large scale business with the outer world. Zaun's economy is based on illegal activities and providing workforce to Piltover.

I didn't get that about them being sort of like a single city, always though of them as very close cities that had some rivalry with science (or was that the old lore with the old map?) that share control over the canal. I suppose it makes sense why the map has a single symbol/marker with 2 stars instead of being separated.

I actually care a little less about how much I hated her design now I know her lore and stuff, everything about her is *obnoxious*, look at that hair and crown and weapon and outfit I do agree with your criticisms though, however.

Mastering that kind of weapon should have left her with a hella lot of scars tbh. Really tired of all these supposed warriors looking like blank, untouched slates.

Wow, so, she's kind of a terrible person. She's Draven...but without any of the charm of Draven. Now I just imagined her splash art, but with Draven's face instead of hers.

Dat animation breakdown doe. [Edit point] I watch these to get better insight and understanding of the league universe. But alot of the time I feel like I'm taking a class on character design and animation. Like the points of compression and stretching to emphasize different parts of animation. It's something that went noticed but I never thought of putting it into words or giving it a second thought. And the general lessons in physics and momentum. Thanks TB

You should see the beginning of her concept art, it looked so promising.

I like how she's animated, one of the reasons I decided to try to play her. Very dance-y and fluid. I agree though that just looking at her I don't get queen or high royalty vibes. More of a princess in a cosplay sense.

Hi TB Skyen! Great video as always! I just finished looking at Qiyana's early designs on ArtStation and I've gotta say, the older version of her seems a lot more interesting to me. She changed weapons for each elemental type and she had these bracelets and hair "bangles" that changed color when she attacked in a specific element. She also seemed more viceral and manic which could add to her obsessive dictator archetype. What do you think, though? Your points about her relationship to her chakram are very interesting. (The artist was Gem Lim, if you're interested)

Last few weeks, I’ve been playing Qiyana and I came back to this video because I’ve been having so much fun just by looking at her animations. Picking up elements and throwing them around is so *satisfying*

I'm worried that Riot will make more cookie cutter female characters because of the financial success of Kai'Sa.

This shows that there are talented artist and animators in RIOT, there is probably some guy on the higher levels with really poor taste in women and desides to use the blandes and "Sexiest" models. Hell i would even argue her lore is great, just wish her design actually reflected that even a little bit.

I would love a story about how the raids annoyed piltovans enough to send camille into the jungle to set this "little" girl straigth.

You talk about her design not being baroque enough, but I believe, since they're a hidden society, their culture is different. As you said, they went for a South American vibe, with the jungle aesthetic and yada yada. That is pretty clear to me. The sense of power or empress, I see in her stature, or posture, the way she carries herself, how she talks to others. She clearly believes she's the best. In her physical design, I think we shouldn't be looking at it from that perspective of European Kings that wore lots of gold, but from the perspective of a young jungle teenager who is ambitious, and thirsty for power. She has the feminine look to her, though. But that's just another talk of gender roles, and of how "masculinity" represents strength and "femiminity" represents weakness. It depends on the society and context 🤷 So I dunno. Im not too keen on this character, but I don't hate her design.

She is lowkey one of my favorite characters design and personality wise i have always really loved characters with that bratty better than everyone else personality (lian from paladins) and I think her arms and thighs (avoided leaving them bare skin due to sexualization) are like that so they help her spin the blade

I just hate Qiyana's personality. Her kit is interesting, it's just she quite literally a royal brat.

As a latinx the whole "respect your elders even if they're shitty or dumb" rage inducing morals are a thing that resonates a lot with me and still bothers me to this day, though I'm 28 years old. So hey at least kudos to her for trying to fight that even if in a crazy teenager temper tantrum kinda way.

I wish they’d went with the early concept for her, that shit was unhinged and creative as fuck, but instead this is what they dished out..

the idea of giving military aesthetic to a dictator-like character from a south america based faction is absolutely awful considering almost all of south america suffered genocides from military dictatorships during late 60's to the 80's (all of wich were proved to be instigated by the US)

Hey TB, I wanted to ask you about your thoughts about "what if" concept arts, specifically the story behind the design of Quinn and Valor, being first visioned as a melee assassin (IronStylus had posted some concept art of that iteration). Also please What's the deal with Quinn and Valor :D

In case you hadn't seen it since recording: It's "Ish-tal" and "I-shao-kahn". And yes, it is Piltovans LOL And I wanna say that your description of Qiyana's lore at the beginning is freaking hilarious and I actually just kind of love her, as a character

The weapon is smart because it swings around her like all things should, since according to her, she's the center of the universe.

i totally agree with the fact that she should be wearing more prestigious clothing but we still haven’t seen actual people from that region. she could in fact look more royal than everybody else, and the fact that she doesn’t look as royal as actual kings, like in shurima and demacia, makes sense because the whole region is isolated. they don’t have the same knowledge about culture (regarding fashion, etc.) as other regions do.

After hearing about her lore and personality a few weeks ago....her design makes soooooo much sense

In the wiki it says she is 20 years old. (Her height is 1.54 though.)

Her animations remind me of Tira from Soulcalibur who also uses a ring blade. Really graceful and dance like motions that can actually seriously kill someone with the right momentum

I get she’s “royalty” or whatever but her lore talks about how they don’t want trees and such to be chopped down, but they’ll deal with it just because..like...how were they able to sew and mold her outfit and make the gold and such without mining? How has she managed to have perfect hair that’s even STYLED?

Her shoulder joints are really buff though, if they wanted to make her appear realistic in context, then I'd say they'd also need to give her a bit more muscle in the pectoral area and upper back. What with her swinging a freaking massive elemental hoola hoop blade and all. Pretty unimpressive design over all, looking forward to the op skins she's gonna get.

Not gonna lie i always wish that noxus invade ixtal or the ruination come for them just so i can get to see swain or leBlanc outsmart her or viego or hecarim beat the crap out of her and see her moping like a angry baby . I think that the reason why she uses a ring blade (in conjunction with the elements chosen) can be symbolic of three things; - Circular because of the Earth's shape, as the Earth is mostly comprised of Water, Nature and Earth (like rocks, etc) - Circular because it is a statement piece; there isn't anything extravagant and elaborate about a sword (with or without shield in tandem), a spear, or being a gunslinger of some sort. Other potential weapon choices pale in comparison to the ring blade and how extra and over the top the weapon is. It relates to her personality heavily - Circular weapon because of the fluidity of the ring blade further exaggerates her agility and grace making her look like she performs this effortlessly

I don't know, every time I see her, I always think that would be cool if she was like that girl from Shaman King that fights inside a Iron Maiden. She could be that Queen/High Priestess and fight inside a Dogu, using the weapon (what a call her weapon? A bambolê-blade?) I don't know how that would mess with her lore, personality and new kindgom but the visuals sound more... something. Not a pretty queen lady number 756, another one of those in League of legends

Actually all the lore wouldn't make sense, BUT, the image that comes to my mind is really cool

I main Qiyana. I love her kit and gameplay, but I agree that her design is pretty boring. I do like that while she is a character that is designed to be hated, but she does have a really compelling backstory. I'm glad that she isn't bad because she is a bad person but had a troubled childhood. At least she has a reason to be the way she is.
