When you have the Bangles dancing on the stage dancing to the tune you are playing, that's a very good day.
Note to self, add Dancing with the Bangles to Bucket List.
Took me a couple minutes to realize the three girls dancing to his left are the Bangles. Must have been a great concert to see!

Why
Every 6 months I pull this song out and play it. I cry every time.
I just stumbled across this video. Love Elvis Costello and I agree that it's a very good day when the Bangles are dancing beside you.
I like the little shout-out to The Who's "The Kids Are Alright" near the end of the song.
Thank you Nick Lowe

I saw that tour at UCDavis. Nick Lowe acoustic opening?!!! Two sets by EC?! Napoleon Dynamite? 37 years ago, and it's still one of the greatest concerts I've ever attended.
Astonishing performance. I must own 20-30 versions of this (most of them live) on records, CDs, DVDs, and I've probably seen him perform it 20+ times. But this is an inspirational version. The Bangles had done some songs earlier in the set - I don't know if they were even supposed to be onstage for this bit, but they just run out and go for it. Every musician, singer, dancer onstage just losing themselves completely in the song. Steve's keyboards, the 'Kids Are Alright' snippet, the Bangles dancing, and the best rock drummer in the world - this is a very special performance.
Pete Thomas still sounding brilliant on the drums.

This really rocks, I gotta come back every now & then to pick up my energy, and see the world ain't that bad!
Elvis is still king ❤❤❤
The fire never dies, does it? Ah, sweet music... Sing it!
Love the way he threw in 'The Kids are Allright' at the end there!

And Davey Faragher's delighted grin when he does it. OK, it was probably rehearsed, but they do a good job of making it look spontaneous, and it raises a smile for sure. And the Bangles don't even have any lines! They just run back on because they want to be part of this beautiful rock'n'roll thing. It's joyous.
Love this video of one of my top favorite songs of all time. As I write this, next year 2024, the song is 50 years old! Happy Anniversary to Nick Lowe who gave his endorsement to the Sharon Van Etten version of this classic masterpiece. If you haven’t heard it, search it and get goosebumps.

This is why young Elvis is one of our best students. Has a thirst for learning and asks the question and asks the simple question. The simple answer is that nothing's funny 'bout peace, love, and understanding. That said, we try to make fun of it all the time. Our attempts at humor always fail. We try anyway.
Elvis Costello is a great entertainer and like Sinatra, he did it his way....
Love those drums
Oh wow, oh wow! Happy Days! Saw the first Spectacular Singing Songbook tour in London in 1986 and he finished with this (brilliantly mashed with Pump it Up) that night too. Sadly we didn't have things like KZread in those days, so I had to make do with a bootleg cassette from the Brighton Record Fair which lasted a couple of years before becoming completely worn out. Still my favourite song of all time, and hopefully this memory of it will last forever... :)

And then adding "Kids are all right" Who song lyrics near end.
Love the, "Edith Prickly" hat.
I saw the 1986 tour where he was promoting Blood and Chocolate and King of America on the same tour. Three nights at the Riveria nightclub in Chicago. First night: He played with a different band including T-bone Burnett and others. Played King of America tunes and a lot of rootsy/americana type tunes. A handful of tunes from his albums with the Attractions. Killer show. Second night: Spinning wheel night with the Attractions. It was fun and he talked a lot about his songs. He sent off the Attractions at one point and played solo electric on some songs including I Want You and Tokyo Storm Warning, the latter he played one verse at a time and then stopped, paused, and explained the lyrics, then moved on. A great time, but a lot of "down time" with wheel spinning and other hijinks. Third night: With the Attractions, he played a blistering two hour set with maybe twenty spoken words all night. Just a smoking, fantastic show. One of the best ever.
As I walk through this wicked world Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity I ask myself, "Is all hope lost? Is there only pain and hatred and misery?" And each time I feel like this inside There's one thing I wanna know What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? And as I walk on through troubled times My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes So where are the strong and who are the trusted? And where is the harmony, sweet harmony? 'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away Just makes me wanna cry What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? So where are the…
gosh darn.....simply ......delightful
Love Steve Nieve's keys!

Summer 2007 - Whole Foods West Vancouver. Swing into a check-out line with some BBQ for the night and lo and behold there I am right behind a rock god, none other than Declan himself.. He's paying for two packs of Diapers - 96 in total (environmentally friendly ones of course) I looked at his shopping, he caught my eye and immediately we both started to smile. Me: "Generally speaking my entire image of you is gone". Declan: "Mine too" Rock Gods are human too.........

I prefer Elvis' SLOW version of this great song, FAR more impactful - saw him do it live, October, 2007 warming up Dylan in Manchester, NH. Did 45 minutes, no one wanted him to leave!

The Bangles? Well, that explains why they're dancing.
Elvis seems like he's doing a sound check, not an actual concert.

SmileytheFeralCat well the video information says 2012, from his hat, which he started wearing in mid 1990s,I’d say at least 1995, and the three Bangles, as opposed to four, tells me it’s around 2003. So I’d somewhere between 1990 and 2012,if that’s any help. Probably at least 2001, if I had to guess.
Can anyone tell me why I love 03:42 to 03:50 so much?

Because, financially, like McCartney, he really doesn't need need to do this. He's got his millions, his beautiful mansion in Vancouver., beautiful wife and family. He could just kick back and pull his shoes off. But he won't. Because delivering a show is in his blood, and it's got to be a bloody good show. I've got tickets for four gigs in June 2022.
