Nick Lowe was, and is, underrated. He wrote great songs, produced great artists, played with great bands (Rockpile), and still putting out music today.

Yes, he absolutely did. And damn near no one would have ever heard of it had not Elvis Costello made it into one of the all-time kickin' rock and roll songs.

Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Bob Geldof, Nick Lowe, Curtis Stigers, Elvis Costello... whoever sings this song, it is always a masterpiece. I listen to it whenever I feel blue. Sorry for my shaky english. Best wishes from Italy.

​​@@jaolin6042actually you're right on. I was working on the Kerry campaign, Max was campaigning for him and suggested to Bruce that they put on a fundraising concert. So it really was Max & friends.

And I thought I couldn't love this song any more than I already did. So grateful to be wrong.

Wow!! I remember this. Bruce, John Fogerty, Dixie Chicks, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews, Bonnie Raitt. We need this song now, in 2019, more than ever.

In Florida in 2021, where we couldn't breathe the air for several days because of toxic discharge from a fertilizer plant (which we were assured was NOT the cause!), allowed to pollute so a few could make a LOT of money, all I could think of was the line, "Where are the strong? Who are the trusted?" We are being sold out, people, without a thought for the future, only for present profits, and not OUR profits.

Indeed - Bruce himself was happy to do covers and many of his own songs were covered. No one appreciates a well crafted song more than someone who is him or herself a good songwriter, even if it's not theirs. Always loved Bruces cover of Jersey Girl (by Tom Waits)

I always think that for a National Anthem,this song or Canned Heat's 'Let's Work Together'.

Doesn't matter if you don't like the performance. These all hands on deck renditions are often ragged but N Lowe's masterful use of a simple verse/ chorus chord structure is as powerful as they come. You can't help but feel it.......

Nick Lowe tells the story that he was desperate to write his first song but every time he did so he'd play it and realise that he'd just re-written a Dylan one or a Lennon one or whatever. Then one day he came up with this and it slowly dawned on him that he couldn't remember who originally did it and realised that he'd acheived his aim. Yes this was his first.

Never saw this before. I saw Nick Lowe and Elvis C do this one together in Denver just last month. Ridiculously great.

Holy smokes I can’t freaking believe that I’m 65 I’ve seen a lot of concerts. I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen twice and seen all sorts of people that that that is just freaking amazing what a life blood lyrically musically, spiritually socially integrated with the amazing thank you thank you thank you.

There is a version of this, just Nick and Elvis, that will rip your heart out if you can find it.

Dave Matthews seems like some Sheldon Cooper between all these Rockers - anyway giving a great and original contribution :-)

This must have been one of the proudest moments in Nick's career.

Okay, just a few comments. Max Weinberg is "the glue guy" to use Coach Self's term. Probably the best drummer in Rock n Roll. One of the best songs ever.
