What’s Paul Jones of the Manfreds learnt from 60 years onstage?
Музыка
The Manfreds start their 60th Anniversary Tour in September with Paul, Mike D’Abo and Tom McGuinness in the line-up. He talks to us here about the first and best shows he’s seen and …
… being told “there’s a soul/R&B singer in Birmingham and if he ever comes to London you’re finished”.
… how Brian Jones “opened up a secret door”.
... “stealing from Tennyson” for the lyrics of 5-4-3-2-1.
… being with Mick Jagger and Long John Baldry watching Alexis Korner calling up guest “shouters” and all thinking “pick me!”
… what T-Bone Walker taught him.
… seeing Lonnie Donegan at the Kings Theatre, Southampton, and the absurdity of doing ‘It Takes A Worried Man’ in your skiffle band when you’re only 15.
… Bob Dylan at Earl’s Court.
… the earth-shifting impact of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
… and the early adventures of ‘Blues Boy’ Jones.

81 and still touring, I doff my cap in respect.
He's 81 and still has a strong pair of lungs. Thanks for this.
Great interview with Paul, always loved his work from the early days of his career. Thank you Paul for everything.
Went to see the Mandfreds at Stamford corn exchange recently, they were simply awesome and Paul is a top notch singer and harmonica player.Great evening of rhythm and Blues 👍👏👏👏👏
Paul Jones what a legend looks just as good as he was 50 years these word in your ears chats are the best
REQUESTS Please, PLease, PLEASE get Paul back to talk again - and again- I reckon 6 one- hour slots to be about right! This is not a joke; he’s a lovely man and he must have a raft of stories - or is he writing his autobiography? and before you do - buy him some decent fibre so that the connection isn’t like dialup! Niw to look for any of his gigs in the Leeds area
Love Paul Jones singing all round singer and harmonica player is fab all good on stage seen them loads of times my favourite band a good 👍👍👍👍cheers Paul Jones you are a 🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌟
Always a BIG fan of Paul Jones....
Brilliant voice.
Aaaah. Lonnie Donegan! I remember him being on tv, and my parents went into the “front room” while I watched and cheered him in the dining room. He was brilliant?
Saw Manfred Mann at the Marquee Club the day Do Wa Diddy Diddy went to number one. John Mayell was also playing that night.
Come Tomorrow my favourite song by Paul Jones brilliant
Roy Young played with The Beatles in Hamburg - I mean actually with them, not on the same bill. There are pictures of him playing piano with the Fabs at The Star Club, I think.
Write a memoir, Paul.
Lovely gig they played at Keswick last month🎼🎵👍

I’m not sure about now but I saw them in around 2016 and they did When I’m Dead And Gone and Malt And Barley Blues. They also did those songs when I say them in the late 90s, so I’m guessing they probably still do. In the late 90s, because Mike Hugg, was still with the band then, they did the theme from Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads, which he co wrote, and both times that I saw them Mike D’Abo did Handbags & Glad Rags and Build Me Up Buttercup. The last time I saw them he also did the Cadbury’s Finger Of Fudge jingle that he wrote, which was fun.
Went to see the blues band a couple of years ago, unfortunately they just seemed to play songs from their individual solo CD’s which were available in the foyer at the break for a tenner a pop. I loved The Blues Band from 1979.
Do anyone remember the talented Anthony”duster” bennett wasn’t he from wales singer marvellous harmonica player and singe-songwriter killed in 1976 !
He’s from Pompey so he’s 👍 Also he’s a great musician
Great interview, recently saw his 1967 film "Privilege"...
Roy young passed away 2018 .
What was the 60's footage of The Manfred's where a girl in the audience keeps pulling Paul Jones's trousers which makes him understandably nervous as he tries to sing?
