It is abundantly clear that there is always so much thought and consideration that go into your videos and you always have hard data to support your arguments. Not to mention, you straddle the line between wishful thinking and reality very well all while removing most, if not all, emotion from your perspectives. Holl might do solid in his role at times to trick people into thinking he's such an underrated lowkey top 4 D man. But in the playoffs there ain't no way u can have faith in Holl to play big minutes or else this team is gonna get smoked. He's just not that guy. If he's on the 3rd pair playing 15-16 minutes then that's fine

They won't do anything about Holl and people care too much about some random game in a regular season that doesn't matter. He's not the first player to get -3 in a game, and he's by far not the most common to get a -3 in a game either. During the Montreal series, Holl and Brodie were actually +5. They were the 2 best defensive players on the entire roster in this series. During the Tampa series, Holl had the 5th best +/- stat at +2, making him the 3rd best defensemen on the roster under Brodie and Muzzin. I think acknowledging this is important. When you think of all the stupid plays in the last 2 series that cost the Leafs various games, Holl's name does not come up. It's Thornton, Sandin, Dermott, Galchenyuk, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Simmonds, etc. I just don't see Dubas doing anything with Justin Holl. He's a 2 million dollar right-shot defensemen that is frankly too difficult to replace. I have my doubts the Leafs can afford him next season over re-signing Bunting, Samsonov or O'Reilly, but that's a separate issue. I'd be more concerned with Sandin or Rielly or Timmins, and there's actually evidence that Timmins will be fine. Timmins was only a -1 in 12 playoff games with Colorado, and he was a LOT younger back then. That's pretty dang reliable.

Yeah, I gotta admit - while there are times I want to attach Holl to a rocket and banish him to the moon forever, he's actually been solid in the playoffs for the most part. Sandin is honestly more concerning to me at this point, so getting a 2LD that can pair with Liljegren so Gio can play third pair with Holl would honestly be for the best. Besides, we all know Holl plays his best with Gio, so having them be a shutdown third pair would be really solid if they can find a better partner than Sandin for Liljegren.

I never said Holl would get bumped from the lineup. I said they’d be looking to upgrade on him and the role he plays. He’d just get bumped down, not out. I said you might feel scared with him playing the most difficult minutes on the blue line. But showed overall they’re winning or tying those minutes with him. In a lesser role I have no doubt his numbers would go up a lot and you’d notice him less.

I think fans need to have reasonable expectations with Matthew Knies. Nick Abruzzese had 33 points in 28 games in the NCAA before he signed with Dubas, and 44 points in 31 games the year before that. Despite his great NCAA numbers, he amounted to nothing at the NHL right away, and he's only at 38 points in 52 AHL games - still developing and behind Roberston's production. I have no doubt Nick Abruzzese will be a top-6 player at some point, but this shows that there is at least a 2-year gap of development to get these players ready for the NHL. Let's take a guy like Jimmy Vesey - he had 46 points in 33 in the NCAA (24 being goals) and he really struggled at the NHL level, getting about 1 point every 4 games. I'm just putting this out there to lower your expectations. Most people coming out of the NCAA are not going to be Cole Caufield and will require development. I'd say this is almost assured. If Dubas wants a forward, he shouldn't wait for Knies.

  • @michaelhorne7238

I believe the expectations for him in the short term are to come in and add energy and jam to the 4th line. Maybe the 3rd. He is big and fast and likes to hit. If he can just do that, he will add an element that the Leafs just don't have that currently.

  • @mig3598

Nobody who is reasonable is expecting Knies to come in and be a key addition to this forward group. Management knows that if they are avoiding dealing him, it’s to protect the prospect pool/future. The thing is the leafs big players contracts will expire in the next few years and the futures mean nothing when the whole objective is to make a formidable team that is ready to make a cup run

I think a lot of scouts peg Abrusezze at best like a 3C but more an offensive 4th line centre is what I have seen. He goes through hot and cold stretches and has a decent amount of points on the pp. Just want to temper your expectations. I think him, McMann, Holmberg and Steeves are all good bottom 6 options that could push for a spot next season but I'd expect max 2 of them get one. The prospects to look forward to would be the ones Dubas named, Knies, Minten, Niemala, Hirvonen, Grebyonkin (doing better than Tarasenko at that age in the KHL, still has a year left on his KHL contract though). Sorry if this is scattered lol

6:20 that's part and parcel of playing a possession heavy style of game. Turnovers imply possession before the turnover takes place. With that said, I'd love to see the Leafs try to simplify their tactics from time to time - the min-maxing of their offense and defense only works when the opposing teams (and goaltenders) aren't expecting it.

Because the 4th line has been playing great since it was put together. Probably the best line vs. Chicago. Im not saying I love Kerfoot on the bottom line with how much he is paid but that line will get easy match ups and has torn apart the bottom lines of the other teams and in no small part due to Kerfoots playmaking and defensive game. He adds a little bit of skill to the tough forechecking line with ZAR and Acciari. I thought the same thing seeing the lineup cards but watching the games they are probably my favourite or second fav in most. ROR line on Buffalo was great though. Like just try to pay attention to them in the game and maybe you'll change your mind. Kerfoot also is an own rental situation really. As of rn the 3rd line is the issue. Not good offensively and struggled defensively the past few games other than the wild game. xG have not been kind to that line

Sometimes I’m tight for time in my videos. Don’t like posting things longer than 15 minutes. Usually means I can make two videos instead. While the Leafs D isn’t the best at handling good forechecking teams, the Leafs themselves have a great forecheck. They’re among the leaders in forcing giveaways at the other end. They don’t finish their checks, but they win a lot of puck battles. Tavares, O’Reilly, Nylander do it a lot

So Dubas obviously isnt done. Dubas has a track record of combining assets they need to keep the number of assets going out down. I wouldnt be the least bit surprized if we see a trade involving a Defencman and a depth goalie in the same trade coming to Toronto. Now the Leafs are going to be looking for A) a right shot defenceman and b) a goalie they can possibly pass through waivers so they dont have to carry three goalies if theyre not planning on moving Murray. So looking at some teams who may have two players that may fit in with the leafs needs. Edmundson-Montembault Could the Leafs choose to move on from Justin Holl in a trade like this with 50% retained on Edmundson it could work. He does shoot left but he could be a good option to replace Muzzin. Now Montembault would have to pass through waivers i believe and I dont think they would be able to do that without him being claimed so I wonder if it would be worth just carrying a third goalie for the rest of the season given Murrays injury issues. Korpisalo and Gavrikov To me this is the better of the two moves for them Gavrikov is again a lefty but also getting Korpisalo in the deal would really help solidify the goaltending. Theres alot of talk about Chychrun and Vejmelka. That just isnt happening for the leafs. In Order to do something like that Dubas would HAVE to give up not only the first in 2024 but Matthew Knies or Minten PLUS, Theres no way around that and theres no way Dubas will give that up. There will be to many other teams out there to outbid what the leafs can offer. Now theres a darkhorse here ive kind of been looking into for the leafs in a goal depth thing here. Laurent Broissoit. Hes been hurt but I think hes either back or ready to come back. With the depth in net for Vegas I dont doubt they would move a goalie. believe Thompson is out right now but their goalies are for next season Lehner,Thompson,Hill and Brossoit. Thats just not a go. I think Broissoit would be the perfect option for a third goalie if they retain because he will be cheap and he could possibly pass through waivers because of the injury.

He's just become the leafs fan scapegoat. Like Phanuef, Gardner, Zaitsev, Ceci, in the past. Holl, especially when we consider his cap hit, has been great. The thing with most defensive defenseman is that when they play great, they are not noticeable but if they make one mistake, it's glaringly obvious to everyone. So if Holl makes a shit play here and there and then isn't noticeable the majority of the time he's playing well, it looks like he's a big liability but it's not necessarily the case. I won't argue that the Leafs could benefit from a D upgrade, and the odd man out may very well be Holl, I'm just not sure if they'll be able to upgrade on Holl and stay under the salary cap.

Gotta be honest. Not a lot of dman out there intrigue me that much. Soucy, Jensen, Mayfield, Chychrun, McCabe (probably forgetting some and the latter two would cost too much) really only appeal to me. Ekholm would be perfect tbh, but that contract cap hit and term r just too much for the team. Also everyone saying Holl would be out if we added one needs to look back at previous playoff series. Sandin is 100% the 6th man rn and that is who would be replaced. Also Holl at 2 mil is pretty reasonable, Keefe loves him and so does Dubas so unless they find an amazing dman to replace him on the pk and stuff, he is staying. I don't think the leafs necessarily need a dman and after already giving up so many assets in the ROR deal I would be hesitant to get another dman. I dont think a depth guy really pushes people out of the group or moves the needle much. So you are looking for a top 4 and there really aren't that many out there. Mostly a lot of 5, 6 guys. I have a feeling I am not going to like the dman add they do and reading these comments, lol neither are a lot of other people

Done for trades and set for beasts of the east in playoffs...then if you want move holl and kerfoot to recoup picks

Why not go for Hedman and Makar? I am sure they can be obtained in a trade and all that would be needed to trade would be Engvall, Aston-Reese, Kerfoote and Holl. And get Tampa and Colorado to retain 50 percent of the salaries. Sounds good to me.

the only upgrade I can see would be Sandin, but at this point, if you don't trust him to play in the playoff, what's the point of having him on your team. Keefe will die with Holl. Giordano, Rielly, Liljegren and Brodie are lock in for sure.

I think it could be argued that the Leafs have enough offence from the back end without Morgan Reilly. However, they are woefully light in front of their own net. they need a greater presence at the back end with Jake Muzzin gone. It is a little risky, but with the cap, maybe Leafs need to take a risk. I would like to see a multi player hockey trade with the predators. Sending them Morgan Reilly, Matt Murray, Justin Holl and a couple of younger players, such as Nik Robertson and maybe a Roni Hirvonen , for Mattias Ekholm, Ryan McDonough and maybe young centre Tommy Novak. The big risk for the Leafs is in goal they have to bet that they would be just as well off with Joe Woll or Erik Källgren backing up Samsonov. Matt Murray may not be healthy enough to contribute in a meaningful way, but with Ekholm and McDonough on defence, Leafs may not even need a goalie. Preds are either rebuilding or something similar, so moving a couple of older defencemen might be of interest to them. Reilly is still young enough that he can help Nashville in their efforts. If Leafs kept these two defencemen next year, and kept Ryan O'Reilly, they would not likely be able to sign Micheal Bunting.

Bunting - Matthew's - Nylander Tavares - O'Reilly - Marner Acciari - kerfoot - Jarnkrok Engvall - Kampf - Anderson Rielly - Liljegren Giordano - Timmins Sandin - Holl(even though he shouldn't be) Samsonov Woll That's who I would run. Played the sport for 18 years and 6 of them being AAA Rep for the Eagles. (have a little knowledge but I'm no coach 🤷🏼‍♂️🫣) Could even mix the 3rd line up and have acciari center if need be

The leafs will not play Kerfoot at 3C when Acciari and Kampf are on the team. Kerfoot is better at wing. Btw, where is Brodie on your defensive pairings?

Just because your parents could afford to buy you everything, doesn't mean you know anything about hockey lol. White kids think they are good at hockey. You're the only ones who could afford it. 93% white. It's a white privilege sport. You obviously weren't good enough to make it.

What the Leafs NEED and should do, is acquire a Top tier goalie ! Any team that wins the CUP has a Top tier Goalie ! Samsonov and Murray are B tier Goalies AT Best ! You KNOW this ! Everyone likes Murray and Sami, but likeing a guy does NOT win the CUP ! And that's the end word ! WIN ! That takes superior goal tending ! Not a D that needs to make up for a weak goalie ! Mike.

Colorado won the cup last year with a B goalie. The only team in the league with a proven top goalie is Tampa.
