Rubberhose 3 is here! This incredible After Effects extension has been rewritten from the ground up and is packed with new features. In this video I'll walk you through all of the major new features and how to use them. Here are just a few of them:
- Bend along any point of the hose
- Multiple bends on a hose
- Parent any layer to a hose
- Convert a Shape Layer path into a hose
- Major RubberRig improvements
And that's just scratching the surface. Creating, animating, and modifying character rigs has never been easier. With version 3, harnessing the power of the essential graphics power is at your fingertips, allowing you to use multiple instances of the same character rig with completely different animations.
There's so much I want to show off, but there's no way I could contain it all in one video. If there's a specific feature or workflow you're interested in, be sure to leave a comment letting me know.

    Pretty huge update, will be going back to rubberhose from Limber with the new bend slides and the ability to do multiple bends. One thing that Limber is still fantastic for is applying shape layer art to the limb so it can bend with it etc. I haven't tried it yet but I imagine using DUIK controls with the EGP features here would be fantastic. The DUIK controllers are shape layers like VOID and have functions to move those controls up outside of the precomp pretty easily. If set up right you could bring out all of your duik and rubberhose controls for each instance of the rig super easily giving you complete control. Great overview Jake! looking forward to adding this one to my toolbelt

    Did you take a breath during this video? I would love for you to do a full-character rig video using Rubberhose 3. I love your style and once I am familiar with the content/topic, I appreciate how easy it is to get a refresher. However, with all the changes since Rubberhose 2, it will be like learning it all over again. If you do create a video, I would appreciate spots where I can pause and turn to Ae and do the same action. Maybe you could make the source graphics available and in that way, I could copy your every move while learning the tool. You're the best, thank you for all you do to educate your viewers. Rubberhose 3 is purchased and installed, I can see a lot of fun in the future. Have a great day!

    I felt the same and have been using Duik Basel for all of my character rigs. Then one of my jobs had bespoke characters that needed bendy arms that the puppet pin couldn't quite achieve and some other bits and pieces so I decided to get rubber hose and it has actually blown my mind! Much less layers required because it doesn't require the same structures, everything is procedural so you can alter things even after the animation is complete anddd it works well with duik. I still use duik for face rigging and the foot roll feature. Although after seeing this new feature of changing the point for the bend direction I'm going to see if I can get a foot roll with a rubberhose limb....

  • @JakeInMotion

    @JakeInMotion

    Жыл бұрын

    You should work at whatever resolution you need for your project. If you plan to render at 1920x1080 and have closeups of your character's face, then the rig needs to be very large so that at 100% scale, the face is large enough for your render comp.

    Wonderful Rubberhose. The controller is way faster than the Duik one. The only sad thing that no one ever said is that the external controller doesn't allow you to activate the continuous rasterization control (the sun), making all the movement cameras, such as zoom in and out, impossible to do without creating giga comps... If someone could find a solution to this, it would be my hero :D

    This was a really wonderful and informative tutorial! Thanks so much. I did have one question however, and I'm having trouble finding an answer on the BattleAxe website. Perhaps I completely overlooked it, but I'm trying the Rig to EGP feature, and it doesn't seem to work on old hoses, which isn't surprising. My question is: Is there a way to convert old hoses from Rubberhose2 to the new ones from 3? or will I need to rebuild them from scratch to use the EGP features?

  • @JakeInMotion

    @JakeInMotion

    You can't update RH2 hoses to RH3, but you should be able to select an RH2 controller and send it to EGP with the Rig to EGP button.

  • @JakeInMotion

    @JakeInMotion

    For the smaller freebies like void and butcapper, the goal is really to make them KBar compatible. That way you don't have to keep them docked to use them. I realize you might not be a KBar user, but it's an incredibly great way to make a custom set of buttons for your most used scripts and functions.

    Hey Jake, love the in depth update here! Question for ya: In the style presets section, you briefly work with the bend crease preset, which outlines the hose with a thin black stroke. Is there a way to only have the stroke show where the crease happens? I'm trying to get the stroke effect only where the overlaps happen, and figured that would be the preset to work off of. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

  • @JakeInMotion

    @JakeInMotion

    Жыл бұрын

    Hmmmm that's tricky. If you open up the styling in the contents of that preset, you'll see a group called "Bend crease" and another called "Base". Inside the base group is "Outline". What I would try is duplicating the entire hose layer and deleting the outline group out of the duplicate, and the crease group out of the original. Then use the base layer as an alpha matte for the crease layer, and it'll only show up where it overlaps with the original hose.
