I assume it's been said, but a drop test for a brick is useless (and maybe even the worst kind of test). They operate in compression, not tension. So I guess now we need is the Hydraulic Press Channel to get some of these things in the press!

Bro you know that bricks are meant to withstand compression not whether they chip after falling, right? If your bricks need to be tested for "drop resistance" than there's some major issues with the structure you're building.

The brick with metal isn’t a brick at all. It’s called a dobie block. It’s used to be a base for rebar that is going to be used for reinforced cement. Think of it as a base to hold up the rebar a couple of inches off the floor from the dirt. The metal wire is there to tie down the rebar so it doesn’t move when you pour heavy cement on it.

“Used brick” is likely more expensive because clay bricks from different runs don’t color match. They are betting contractors would pay more to get bricks from identical runs even if their used. Traditional red clay brick and cinder block new are pumped out in the hundreds of millions if not billions so they are cheaper new, but will probably not color match.

Ok that's seriously not how you test a brick, the main thing you want to test in a brick is compressive strength. The bricks will never take any other kind of load at all, especially not impulse forces like chucking them imparts. And while we're at it, elon's idea is hare brained for reasons too complex to get into. Also also if it interlocks like legos, where does the most important part of a wall go, the cement that holds it together? Yes i'm fun at parties.

Hahaha nice. Remember that with each drop, you introduce irregularities inside the brick, making the likelihood of the brick breaking much larger ach time you drop it. Perhaps a new brick would have survived the last fall. Also, the way the brick hits the ground also affects the forces it experiences throughout the brick

The. most important thing about a brick is how much compressive strength it has. A brick that survives a drop isn't necessarily better than one that break, because the loads that bricks have to take are almost never suddent impacts of hundreds of Gs. In fact, a brick that's tougher under impact is likely to be far weaker under compression, and therefore unsuitable for use in multi-story buildings.

Christina Ellisor, why don't you make the bricks yourself, and do a vertical intergration company? Make the bricks, build the houses and then either sell or rent them out. If you look around on KZread, you should be able to find the formula for making the bricks, and to build a press for these bricks is not that difficult. All you need is some land, clay, sand, cement and oxides, plus some willing laborers. The only thing is that the bricks take 4 to 5 weeks to cure, before they can be used. They also need to be tested to confirm compressive, shear strengths and water absorption.
