I did it, I pushed the button and finally made my choice on upgrades to my camera and lenses. Chose the Nikon Z7ii together with the Nikkor z 24-120 f/4 s and the NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8. Once I finish paying for those over this year, then I will add the NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S and possibly the NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S. I’m so incredibly excited. Nigel, your valuable input with your reviews and comparisons were so important in my decision making. this is the first major upgrade I’ve made in more than 20 years, and it is most definitely a major upgrade going from a D5000 to full frame and Mirrorless with top quality glass (a first for me).

Spent 12 months touring the UK a few years ago and kept 2 nikon bodies running on each hip all the time. One had the 14-24 and the other 70-200. In my backpack I had a 50, 300 and 105 micro. This worked very well for me.

Nothing boring about these videos Nigel. I often find some very useful items, gadgets, what have you, in these videos. I've been dropping my bag in the sand and dirt for a while and never once thought to get a nice little collapsible bag like your orange one to set it in. Inexpensive and a great little idea to keep the gear clean!

The most interesting thing about these "what's in my bag" video's is to learn about all the non-camera stuff that is useful when out and about in the field! A bunch of micro fiber clothes to take with me is definitely a good idea, I do have an old piece of cloth with me to dry things up but when I really need it, it's never enough! 😅

Tenba - great quality stuff and I have an ~expensive carry-on roller from them. Does not look like photo gear case, and strong enough for a 6'1" man to sit on - ideal for incognito (air) travel. Would you mind us putting this bag in the plane's belly and upgrade you? Not at all - please do. The interior options are a bit limited. One carrying case manufacturer had adapters to turn a carry-on case in to a backpack and that actually would work for me with this Tenba case (but it's not available AFAIK). All sorts of concepts I have experience with. Nikon, in the 1970s, had a camera case for two F2 bodies (one with lens) and a metal bottom plate with three lens bayonets that kept the lenses in place. That was a favourite for a long time. Think Tank had a "harness" (a set of separately sold belts) that you turn into a belt with suspenders that you then can hang two cameras off at their own height and then they had lens pouches that you could clip on the belt. This looked rather commando, but really works well, fast. I bought it, but it is least used of the alternatives in da house. The best, IMO, from the gear point of view, is the Peli(can) 1510 (or its newer lighter weight alternative) with TrekPak interior. Not cheap again, but Tenba is not either, and waterproof. Falling into water - no big deal. Problem is empty weight is already heavy. The 1510 has carry-on size with "tiny" wheels and Peli(can) had "off road" wheels too. You would need the latter certainly to go places where Nigel goes and still run into terrain that doesn't welcome you dragging that case behind you. (Or these climb-over-a-fence-or-wall situations in Britain's "public footpaths".) I have a 1560 too for my flash kit and again, empty weight is already a problem for a somewhat old man. Lugging that around I can skip going to the gym next day as I had my fitness exercise already. Some airports separate the 1510 in bringing your case back up on arrival because (prejudice) these cases hold expensive gear. Which sends you on a quest for the conveyor belt that was indicated nowhere. For compact missions, the best I have is a camera with lens and either two more lenses or a lens and a speedlight bag with a shoulder strap AND a hip belt that takes the weight off your shoulders (Think Tank Speedster - not sure they still make it.) Biggest nuisance with "cloth/fabric" cases is the need for a separate raincoat (bag).

As an amateur I doubt I'll ever take a 30-day photo trip even though I seriously love my hobby. Even so, there were some very useful tips in this video. Think I'll get me one of those charging cubes and I've been wondering how well that Nikon wireless remote would work with my Z7II....wonder no more! I would definitely purchase a Nigel Danson microfiber cloth. Besides, what better way to remind myself who inspires me to go out and shoot in bad weather! Would also purchase and use the ND sensor brush as a way to support one of my favorite photographers.

While I'm waiting to save up for my Nikon Z 100-400 to complete my Z lens suite, I discovered that I could adapt my old but very satisfactory Canon FD 200 mm f/4 lens to my Z7ii. That lens also has a fine Canon 2x tele-extender. This combination is, of course, manual focusing but with my Z7ii I have full IBIS and auto exposure combined with focus peaking. Not a bad addition to my kit bag for only a $45 investment for the Vello lens adapter. The Canon lenses are so old that their resale values are virtually worthless. But their performances are anything but worthless to me. I'm having a lot of fun with them and my other Canon film lenses that adapt very nicely to my Z7ii.

Hi Nigel - It's always interesting to see what others pack in their camera bags as there's always a better idea for something. For instance, I thought the 'massive bag' was a great idea for protecting your camera bag in wet and muddy areas. I'm curious what your thoughts are regarding just using the largest filter size you need for any of your lenses, and then just using step-up rings to attach them to lenses with smaller filter sizes. For instance, you said you didn't like to bring both your 95mm and 112mm filters with you to save space/weight. Why not just bring the 112mm filters and bring a 77 and/or 82-112mm step up ring? I also own the 14-24mm so I bought a set of Kase 112mm magnetic filters and that's all I use. That way I save money on buying filters for my 77 and 82mm filter sized lenses. Yes, they're really large on a smaller lens, but so what? It wouldn't be any different than using 100mm square filters. Any downside?

Are those magnetically attached filters with the 14-24mm lens hood? I didn't know that was an option. I haven't had a lot of trouble focusing using the 100-400mm and 2x teleconverter, but I do find that I need to use the focus limiter switch on the lens. My problem with using the teleconverter is that you lose 2 entire stops of aperture so it really needs to be good daylight to use it.

Tripod head. Photographers always have the wrong: (1) tripod/head, (2) carrying case, (3) light modifier, etc.. I have three tripods, Nigel said, and that is the right attitude, at least if they are meant for different use cases. Its the same in all these "wrong" walks of photography life. So what a landscape photographer REALLY NEEDS in a tripod head: panorama rotation in the top plate. As Nigel's tripod head that he shows in the video doesn't have that, I would never buy it. As I started with a Manfrotto ballhead - lightweight magnesium - that did not have it either, I (fingers crossed) DIY modified that and fortunately it worked. Now I only need to bring my 3D panorama head for multi row panorama shots: almost never. The problem is in the levelling that needs to happen in the rotation plane and levelling the tripod itself? Good luck with that.
