Thank for the uodate Andy. Very interesting as usual. I'm fed up with the hastle using screw in filters, so very interested to give the Kase magnetic system a try. Looks like a good deal easier to use, especially with cold hands!

Very useful update, Andy. And interesting to see how your kit has evolved over time. One small detail. I was surprised to see that you are still using the 55-200 for your X-cameras. Your review of the 70-300 when it first came out was so compelling that I switched up to it, and have been very glad that I did! Over and above the many points highlighted in your review, I have found the 70-300 can also serve as a decent macro lens, and its image quality is such that it is one of the small list of lenses that Fuji says can fully resolve their new 40 mp sensor (I recently upgraded to the X-H2). Cheers

Very interesting video, Andy . Many thanks. One point of interest to me is that you opt for the 16-80 lens. Some Fuji users talk down it's optical quality at times, but clearly you like it even on the hi res sensor with the X-T5.

This is pretty much answering all the questions that I have on kitting myself out for my jump back into photography that I mentioned in a previous comment. And of course you have a drone flying over a volcano and I'm planning on going to Iceland to see the current eruption and that was cool AF. I've done some RC drone flying but nothing with that kind of system I hadn't planned on getting it should I just get the camera I don't know if I'm looking to do video per se cuz I'm not planning on doing I have a million questions maybe I should just send you an email Of course at 3:00 in the morning and I'm watching your videos😖🤭 I've been watching all of your videos okay😂 Good night thank you

A clear and concise video as always Andy, there are not many on KZread who deliver their content as well as you do. And your practical approach to gear reviews makes them very relevant for those of us who combine hiking and photography. In relation to using the Kase system (which I'll be picking up shortly), I assume if you keep the adapter rings on permanently you're then sacrificing the lens hoods? And presumably if that's the case you don't see the hoods as being much of a loss? Thanks!

Had to move to the 95mm Kase Wolverine kit for my 20-35mm. Had some vignetting at 22mm with the Kase 82mm with a CPL and ND stacked :)

Try the Revolution filters (which are slimmer than the Wolverine filters) and the inlaid adapter ring really makes everything smaller. With two filters there's slight vignetting at 20mm, but by 21mm it disappears

Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video. I tend to avoid polarisers on the 10-24, unless I'm using it in the shade for something like a waterfall

When I look at the viltrox 13mm f1.4 (especially the pricetag), I was over the moon. Unfortunately, java island still get a heavy rainstrom. So, no astro for me in a while 😅 ...and good luck for your next trip.

Looking forward to a 16-80 and 70-300 combo review (and maybe adding the Viltrox 13mm for the ultrawide). I've been loving my 16-80 on hikes and I'm considering adding the 70-300 to my kit.

Great insights. I'm surprised you don't take the 100s when hiking, especially with that 35-70. I just grabbed the 50s II with the 35-70mm and am stunned with how light it is, even compared to my prior lightweight hiking setup, the R5 + 16-35mm f/4.

Thanks for the comment. I do take the GFX hiking...I took it with me to the Dolomites where we were doing 4 hour hikes with gains of a couple of hundred meters, but it doesn't go with me on serious hikes like Lofoten. We were doing 16kms with 700m gains, and for that, bearing in mind I always have a drone and a second camera with me, then I prefer to go with a lighter camera.

Hi Andy I really enjoy watching your videos, it inspired me to pick up photography as a hobby. I'll be travelling to the US soon and was thinking about taking a drone with me. You should of course be licensed to fly your drone, and basically check where you are whether you're allowed to or not. In National Parks you simply can't. In some state parks you can buy a one day license (this is the case in Goblin State park and Dead Horse National park at least), so speak to the ranger at the park office. You'll certainly need to have your drone registered.

Some great choices of kit, all logically chosen. Thanks for the insight into your working kit. Only one comment, if you don't mind, those big clamps, as on your RRS clamp head, I find potentially dangerous, esp in harsh weather up a mountain and I've seen quite a few cameras lost due to no form of locking device on the clamps. I understand these are easier to use with gloves. Thanks for uploading and advice on your kit. Your portfolio is sensational by the way, a real treat to view.😊

Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful, and thanks for your kind words on my portfolio. As to the locking device on the clamps..it's a fair point, and it could happen, but I've been using them for over 10 years all round the world and never had one open accidentally yet.

I use medium or large format (95% B&W) so like the late Ansel Adams I lug around a 23 pound Bogen tripod and head. Why you ask? Because I don't always find a convenient 30 ton boulder to attach my tripod head to! Using ASA (sorry ISO) 25 film with a filter factor 64 filter (#25 deep red plus a polarizer for "black" skies) means several seconds at f22 or f64 and I don't want the camera to run away! I carry an empty 5 gallon cubitainer(tm) to fill with water for an extra 40 lbs. of stabilizing weight.

Thanks for the video and thanks for sharing your considerations and thinking about various compromises. Also an indikation of what a standard set of gear you might take with you. However, might I suggest you forgot to include microphone(s)? I have been looking for something to protect cameras in rain and will check out what you recommended. Are they multiple use or single use only?

Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. For a microphone I use the lav mic from the DJI Pocket, but forgot to include it in the video. I also have the DJI Mic for travelling, but don't use it often. At home I use a Yeti Nano USB mic. As for the rain sleeves, they're not single use and last quite well if you look after them. I've had mine for a couple of years

I don't understand why inverted ball heads aren't the norm. I feel like they're superior to normal ball heads for basically all use cases, having the ball underneath the panjust makes so sense to me.

Thanks for the updated kit list! I'm curious if you've checked out the Nisi 9mm f2.8 lens for Fuji x-mount. I have one ordered from B&H and am excited to check it out. Additionally, I'm curious if you'd still recommend the PolarPro Quartzline filters.

Thanks for the comment. I've got the NiSi 9mm and it's not a lens I use at all. It vignettes quite a lot in the corners and it's just not as nice to use as the Viltrox. At some point I'll do a comparison with it and the Laowa 9mm. As the the filters, the PolarPro are excellent and I'd still recommend them. I just prefer magnetic filters for when I'm working in the cold with gloves

Hi Andy, Greatly enjoy your videos. Very well presented and informative. One quick question. I have the Kase Wolverine magnetic filters you talk about in this video. I like the idea of keeping them in a stack with a top and bottom cap. In online reviews, some people comment that the caps are not effective in keeping more than one filter sandwiched. That is, more than one in the stack tends to easily slip apart and potentially scratch the filters. Has that been your experience?

Thanks Nico, glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. That's not a GPS tracker, it's something that attaches to a kind of key ring attachment from an old pack. I do have an AirTag on one of the SD card slots on the back panel of the backpack

There’ll be a video at some point about making a living in photography, and as for AI..there’s always something that people think will kill photography, and it will change the way some people shoot, but for many people nothing will change at all because nature photography is about interacting with nature

Hi Andy! Always interesting on what professional photographers use as gear. Do you notice any shift/skew when tightening the p0 with a long telephoto? 200+mm? I recently bought the Acratech gxp-ss that includes a tension knob. After setting my composition and tightening the head, the camera shifts a bit to the side, and at 300mm is noticable. It doesn't drift, but shifts a bit on tightening. Do you have the same problem with the p0? How do you deal with it? And why do you use the bh-30 with the smaller gitzo tripod? (I got the same one). And how well the legs fold with both ballheada? Thanks for your time :)

Thanks for the comment, The Arca Swiss P0 doesn’t drift at all…once it’s locked there’s no movement. I use the BH-30 as my lightweight head on the Gitzo because the Gitzo ballhead is terrible. It still folds up fine

Thank you for sharing! I found it particularly useful to hear about what you take for lighter loads while traveling (and/or hiking) and still having all the things you need. On that note, may I ask for your suggestion with my own gear? I'm an amateur (enthusiast) landscape and travel photographer, who also likes taking photos of animals (esp. birds) if I can manage them. I currently have a secondhand Fuji XT-1, the kit lens Fujinon XF18-55mm, and the new XF70-300mm. I'm thinking about replacing the kit lens, particularly for a better aperture for low-light (and possibly astro-) photography. But considering I want to keep my gear as light as possible, I was thinking about limiting myself to two lenses and zoom (rather than prime) lenses seem to make more sense. Unfortunately, all of the compatible (not necessarily Fuji) lenses I see with larger apertures (constant below f2.8) seem to be primes. So, several related questions: - Is it feasible to stick with a two-lens kit (the 70-300 and one other)? - Should I replace the 18-55? - Which lens/es would you recommend to best round out my kit for what I want to do (landscape, travel, wildlife photography)? Any help you can give will be much appreciated. Thank you!

If you want just one other lens to go with the 70-300mm that's pretty much an all round lens, then I'd say the 16-55mm or the 16-80mm. The 16-55 is a sharper lens, but the 16-80 is lighter and has a better range

Very useful, a full bag and especially the medium format is heavy. Can you check it as room luggage in an airplane ? I like to have sunhoods on my lenses to keep both the sun out and spray from waterfalls or rain away from my lenses, I use rubber retractable hoods for some lenses that have a too bulky lens hood, don't you miss having a lens hood ? How do you coop in such conditions ?

It really depends on the airline. I know many people who've taken them on as cabin luggage, but personally I never take backpacks on the plane, I just take the ICU with the backpack flat in my luggage. As for sunhoods, I only find them useful with tele photo lenses, with wide angle or mid range zooms, I've not found them to be much use.

I would like to know if with those circular mag filters (Kase KW Revolution) you get vignetting on the GF 20-35mm f4 or on the XF10-24mm f4 in the more angular range. Do you recommend choosing a wider pitch diameter than the lens thread and using scaling rings? Thanks in advance. Regards!

I use the 82mm on the 20-35mm and it doesn't vignette. You can actually get these kind of internal adaptor rings which fit inside the threads on the front of the lens which really reduce thickness. I use one of these on the 20-35mm. Because my filters are all 82mm, I use a step up ring on the 10-24mm.

Thanks for the video! I didn't see a leveling base like your past videos. Have you found this inconvenient when taking panoramas while tilting the camera up or down? Just tilting horizontally with the P0 would make the images skewed

Thanks for the comment. To be honest with panoramas nowadays I tend to just compose more around the edges to allow for any tilt. I’ve not had any problems at all

Another great YT vid Andy. 👍🏻 My biggest, recent upgrade, is the purchase of Nik PureRaw2. My XT3 raw files are transformed. No more worms and super clean high ISO images. Have you tried it?

@@nickmatthews4939 I'd absolutely agree Nick. I'm currently in the middle of a months free trial and will be purchasing it without a doubt ... the difference it makes to the files is staggering. It does add another step to the workflow, but is so worth it for those 'keepers' you want looking as detailed and clean as possible.

Not sure if you could adapt it to your drone, but on reddit some NReal Air user are using them to have very good visibility even in very bright condition of their flight.

I'd be interested in how you are finding the output of your zooms on the X-T5 compared with the 26mp. All of them are the older ones and none are on Fuji's so called recommended list. I got the 16-80 as a kit lens for my X-H2 and so far prefer the output I get from it on my X-T2 though I am finding that developing the 40mp is somewhat different to the 24mp so maybe time will tell.

Barry I have the exact issue as you haha, but I had the 16-80 from when I got the XT3. I thought it was a bit weird too for them to sell a 16-80 as a kit lens with the XT5 when it isn't even on the recommended list.

@@tejraju I bought my X-T4 with the 16-80 and I sold the lens on. I now have the X-T5 and the Tamron 17-70 and it works very well on the '5'. Lovely and sharp, focuses fast. With the realest firmware little or no chromatic aberration. Looking at reviews v the 16-55 one could nit pick in one or two areas, truth is they are on par and the Tamron is lighter and gives an extra 15 mm of reach. With the 70-300 that is a cracking two lens set up and both will resolve images from the 40 mp sensor.

Thanks for sharing your feedback. 17-300 does sound like a great setup... especially when you've the option of adding the 1.4x TC to the 70-300!

I recently got the Fuji X-H2 and the Tamron 17-70mm lens for my landscape work and I am wondering whether I made the wrong choices for the body and lens. Everyone seems to be using the X-T5 for the landscape work and the 16-80mm as their mid range zoom? Have you used either the X-H2 or 17-70mm for landscape work at all? And if so what were your thoughts on them?

Hi Andy, I’ve been watching some of your amazing videos, thank you. I watched some from years ago about why you went from Nikon FF to fuji APSC, which was mainly due to the lighter weight and small size. You found the image quality was still very good and did everything you required. Seeing this newer video where you have a medium format camera, I’m curious why you went for an even heavier system than FF? I appreciate priorities change over time but curious if you found the APSC system was no longer meeting your needs for some reason? Thanks!

I've not replaced the APS-C system with medium format, they work alongside each other. I tend to take the GFX on trips where weight won't be an issue, but the X-T5 goes with me everywhere, and more than half of the time that's the only system I take on a trip. My last two videos were from the US, where I just took the XT5 and XS10, hiking in the Dolomites, the last Namibia and Iceland Highlands trip I just took the smaller system. This year I'll be in Patagonia, Greenland, Iceland, Namibia and the Dolomites again, and I won't use the GFX.

For the last 8 years or so I've also had a large camera (Nikon FF) and a small camera (Olympus MFT) and also appreciated being able to take the best camera for the type of photography I was doing. However, I haven't been taking many photos in the last few years, not really justifying having all my gear. There's been far less travel, landscapes etc and more just a few snaps of the family. The Fuji system looks really fun (those dials!) and a great compromise between the FF & MFT system (it can be basically as light as MFT). Anyhow, watching your inspiring videos, and your faith in the APSC cameras has helped me decide to check out the Fuji system and potentially have it replace my FF and MFT cameras. I have a used XT2 with 16 2.8 coming in the mail :) I'm looking forward to checking it out soon, and hopefully getting out and doing some landscape photography again. I'll also compare all three sensor sizes before I decide whether to fully commit. But yeah with that in mind, that's why I was curious that you added the larger sensor system as well, whether the image quality was maybe not still up to your needs. Thanks for all the great videos! The decisive factor for you to move from Nikon to Fuji was the gear size. Hence the move from FF to Crop sensor. (Then ofcourse fujifilm cameras are great as well). But carrying a medium format camera - isn't it a move in the reverse direction again?

It was a factor, but not the decisive factor. The GFX is heavy, but it probably goes with me on about 50% of my trips, the rest of the time it stays at home and I just take the X Series cameras. I'm just about to make a 2024 version of this video for an upcoming trip to Patagonia, and that will be really lightweight with no GFX. I took the same gear (no GFX) to the USA, the Dolomites, Namibia and Iceland last year, and this year it'll be the same as well as for my trip to Greenland.

@@AndyMumford Thanks Andy for making time to reply. Looking forward to the video. I have used a nikon D90 for about 13 years now. But off late I am finding that I could use somewhat better dynamic range and IQ for landscape photography. I am inclined towards the xs20, as I want to start making some b-roll travel videos as well. Xt4 is a great option as well for me, but a bit pricier here in India.

You didn’t say too much about it but I’m curious about your opinion of the X-S10 as your primary video camera? I’m considering a new vlogging camera. How have you found it’s ability to cope with inclement weather since Fuji classes it as not weather sealed? Or is there another camera you’d recommend to fill this application?

I actually have a review of the X-S10 on the channel kzread.info/dash/bejne/oX5quNdvZNTgc7A.html I like it. I've been using it for 2 years in some pretty harsh weather...it got a wave dumped over it in Lofoten last summer and was fine. When I said it's my primary video camera, that's for when I'm recording myself like with this video, because the flip round screen is essential for that. For regular b-roll of video that's not self-style, then the XT5 is probably used more as it has much better battery life

Hello Andy, thanks for great and helpful video. I have one question to you. I would like to store my Kase Revolution filters in the similar (sandwich) way. This may be a stupid question, but how did you manage to close the filters between the two caps that have magnets in the same direction? Isn’t one of them magnetic?

Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. For the cap on the back of the stack, you need a Rear Lens Cap, which magnetizes to the other side of the filters kasefilters.com/product/kase-magnetic-circular-rear-cap-82mm

Thanks for the comment. I would never recommend Vari NDs for still photography for a couple of reasons. First, you can never judge how many stops they're actually blocking out, which makes exposure guess work. Ones which have markings on the side saying how many stops they're blocking I've never found to be remotely accurate. Secondly, because of how they work with two lens rotating against each other , when you twist them to maximum darkness you get these weird Xs and vignetting, and the light passes through them in a strange way. Vari-NDs I would only ever recommend for video shooting for when you're trying to keep a particular shutter speed to match your frame rate.

Hey Andy - Great vid! Quick question, with your 82mm Kase filters, do you not use a lens hood? Do you find that problematic with your landscape photos in terms of haze or lens flare? Do the shots lack any contrast, etc? (love your work btw) I'm thinking of investing in the same filters and wondered if you miss lens hoods while using them? I know Kase make a lens hood too but I don't really want to bother with that. Thanks

I never use lens hoods and have never found them useful. On a wide angle lens, the lens hood has to be small so it doesn't intrude into the frame and typically it only keeps light that's directly above the lens off. When the sun is low in the sky, it literally provides no protection at all, and if you have the camera on a tripod its more practical to just shade the lens with your hand.

Deuter Freerider Pro 34+ is less than 1/3 the price of the F-Stop (about £120 vs $350 + import taxes to the UK, so about £400 total), 200g lighter, and about the same capacity, with the expandable top compartment. Would that also not be a good option, and save a large amount of cash, about £280? Can just use it with an insert for camera stuff, and it's rated for up to 10kg, which should be more than enough for any photographer / videographer.

I used to have a Deuter Freerider…there’s even a video about it on this channel somewhere. Nice pack, but I got rid of it because the weather sealing and zips were poor. 10kg really isn’t much when you’re doing any hiking with gear. A liter of water, shells and a fleece and you’re already getting close to 3kg. Another kg and a half for the tripod, then add a camera, a couple of lenses, a spare body, a drone, controller, spare batteries for all of those, filters, then essentials like a first aid kit….It’s OK for the bare essentials, but if you’re anywhere that you need to be prepared for changing weather, want a tripod and more than one camera and two lenses, then it’s just not made for that.

When I'm travelling I back my images up onto a Samsung S7 SSD, via my iPad Pro. At home my images are all backed up on a Synology NAS and in the cloud (Adobe Creative Cloud and Backblaze). I also have them backed up on a couple of external HDs

your first tripod must be the Pro Media Gear TRS344L. Is that right? It's the taller version at 71" vs the regular TRS344 seems to be 59." Just curious, seems like a great option.

I have both versions. The one I showed in the video was 59" which is the one I prefer. The 71" is great, but it's much heavier and bulkier to pack, and I don't really feel like I need the extra height

I use an Eyelead cleaning system for the sensor, but like the chargers etc its an essential item that never comes into the field with me. It goes in my luggage and stays in the accommodation. If I need to clean my sensor I'll do it in the room, not outside

Interested to know if it's the same cable release for both crop cameras and the GFX100s?

Hey Andy, building a kit around my XT5 I just ordered. I use to have the 10-24, 16-55 and 50-140. With the new 40mp, is using the 3 lenses you listed not a concern with not resolving the 40mp? do you still see an increase in quality and do you ever crave more from the Red badge lenses that do resolve? Thank you! also are you not concerned having no WR?

Thanks for the comment. Honestly, the answer to all your questions is “no”. The fact that those lenses aren’t optimized for the full 40mp of the sensor in no way limits them, they’ll still produce great images at a significantly higher resolution than they did on the XT4. Image quality is so good now and has been for a while so I don’t crave increased image quality at all, and I’ve been using non weather sealed gear in harsh environments for almost 10 years now and it’s really not an issue

It really depends on the trip, how much stuff I need and for how long I'll be going. I always use duffels bags and vary between an Osprey Transporter 65l, an Arcteryx 55l duffle (it's been discontinued) and an Exped wheeled duffle for when I need a lot of stuff

No, you don't need permits to shoot landscapes commercially in any of the places that I shoot. However, if the land you're on is private (which is often the case in Iceland) then it's a good idea to check with the land owner

I have a question which you maybe can help with. I also shoot with Fuji and I am looking into the Kase Magnetic System. I still am in doubt if I should order the 77mm or the 82mm set. On the one side I have an 150-600 lens (82mm tread) so ordering a 82m set seems the obvious. On the other side 82mm seems so big and 77m is just a bit smaller and I don't know how much I will use the Kase system on my biggest lens. Maybe you have an remarks for me that make my choice an little bit eassier. Regards Han

It's always better to go with the size of your largest lens. You'll probably want to use the CPL quite a lot on your tele, so it's worth it

How is the GFX system compared to the X system for landscape image quality? I currently have a GFX 100s as well and is thinking about complementing it with a system built around X-T5 which has more and cheaper lens options. I’m not a professional photographer so if the X-T5 system works well for me, I would sell my GFX system.

I can't really answer that without being really subjective...different people look for different things in image quality and it really depends on what you feel content with personally. The GFX has better image quality, it's undeniable...the resolution and clean files are pretty much unparalleled by any system, but that doesn't mean the XT5 isn't good. Whether it's good enough depends on what you're happy with. For myself I'm happy using both systems, and never feel as though the XT5 lets me down in image quality in any way

I asked this question because there were a lot of hypes around the X-T5 and I thought the image quality would be close to full frame or even digital medium format. I have done some research on my own and it looks like GFX still has better image quality. Thanks for confirming this as well! I guess the reason for X-T5 would be weight/size, as you mentioned in a few videos, as well as better lens selection.

Hello Andy, I see in your bag for 2023 the X-T5 gear with XF10-24 & XF55-200 lens. Are you able to share with us your experience of using 40MP sensor with those lens ? Both lens are not on the Fujifilm list of lens fully supporting the bigger sensor resolution. How big and what kind is the image quality degradation for 40MP sensor in comparison to 26MP sensor with above lens? From other side, do you see any image quality increase for 40MP sensor with above lens? I think, your practical test can help Fujifilm fans to take better decisions. Thank you in advanced. Cheers

Well, the images still have higher resolution on the XT5 than on the 26mp sensor. It's hard to make a comparison and say what exactly the lenses are losing by not being optimized, but there's not really degradation compared with the 26mp sensors. I'm going to do a review of the 16-80mm, so I'll have a look at it then.

F-Stops warranty does not cover the zippers!!!

They replaced the zip on one of my bags before, and when I've spoken to them they've said they have a policy of replacing broken zips.

I need some help. My wife and I are going on a honeymoon to NZ, I have a hasselblad 500c, three lenses, and a tripod. The three of them combined weighs roughly around 7kg, not including other things including film rolls, water, food, and some emergency kits. Our trip included some hiking sessions that, on average, is 5-6 hours per day. Our ambition was to do the great walks after a few years of practice, and I wanted a bag that would support me on my tours. My wife and I have no experience in long distance hiking yet, or staying overnight in places other than an urban condition. I would very much value comfort and support because I'm not a particular strong person, and my medical condition makes me lose some muscle mass once in a while, if I wasn't being particularly cautious. Any suggestions on camera bags/hiking bags?

If you're carrying a lot of weight in your pack, and it's not just camera gear, but also sleeping gear or clothing, I would look at proper backpacking packs rather than camera bags. My backpacking pack is an Osprey Atmos (I talked about it in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/oH5-y66olrCzdco.html But if that's too large have a look at something like the Osprey Exos 38. You can get an F Stop ICU (like you see in this video) to put your camera gear in

No worries, I've been hiking for about 35 years, and always have food with me. There's always a couple of protein bars in the pack, and usually more water as well, but this video is really about photo gear. I've gone into this kind of stuff in a backpacking video I made, and more into detail about jackets and stuff
