What's happening to Betelgeuse? It's faded to an all-time low, which got people wondering if it was about to go supernova. It isn't, but something very strange is happening to the red supergiant star Betelgeuse and nobody is sure why. Betelgeuse in Orion is about to go supernova, but probably not for up to 100,000 years. In the meantime, why is it so dim?

While it is possible don't get your hopes up the estimated timeline for its supernovae is on the tens to hundreds of thousands of years as mentioned. As Betelgeuse is a runaway star it has an ejecta tail spanning light years behind it letting us roughly get an estimate of its past activity by looking at variations in its ejecta tail as it speeds away from the heart of the Orion nebulae. These changes suggest that it has only been a red super giant for a few tens of thousands of years which suggest it is probably still fusing helium in its core. It would be nice to be wrong but yeah. I'd put a much bigger bet that Eta Carinae A has likely gone supernovae as it is a Luminous Blue Variable(LBV) star 7500 light years away LBV's are a type of massive end stage star known for such highly luminous eruptions that they are sometimes known as supernovae imposter events but several of these imposter events have been followed some years later by the real thing. As these stars only last for thousands of years the star at over 7500 light years away has probably if not almost certainly exploded thousands of years ago.

The Science Channel, sensationalizing? Say it ain't so. But *if* Betelgeuse were greater than 40 solar masses and *if* its gamma ray burst were aimed right toward Earth then yes, I'd be concerned. But I really don't think it has the mass to pull it off.

I just went outside to look for myself and it's AMAZING, Betelgeuse is as dim as Bellatrix, so only Rigel is the brightest star in that giant constellation. Most people confuse Betelgeuse for Mars in the night sky because it's so redish and so bright, it looks like it could be Mars to the untrained eye. I hope we live in the time of its demise, what a night show that will be.

My astronomy professor was from Portugal. His pronunciations of the star's names were very different than what we say. Needless to say it wore off on me because I ended up staying with him through almost all of my astronomy, physics and particle physics classes. He pronounced Betelgeuse "Bay-tul-juice", Rigel "Ree-gul", Taurus "Taow-rus". Then there was my professor who taught us Relativity. He was chinese...super asian chinese (I am asian myself, my uncles have very asian accents lol, so I was lucky) I hosted a study group to go over notes because his accent was so thick. I miss school so much. I really want to get a Ph.D. and research at ALMA in Atacama or Mauna Kea. Would be amazing. Still patiently awaiting the launch of JWST.

I remember the supernova of 1987. I recall some discussions on the event at the time. What comes to mind now is how it was thought most supernovas would be preceded by a relatively quick decrease in luminosity (a few months or weeks). This seems to fit Betelgeuse's behavior now. As an amateur astronomer, I have been observing Betelgeuse for decades, since I was a child. I became so familiar with it that to see it now gives me a very uneasy feeling inside. I knew something was very different ("wrong") with the star well before I heard in the news media about its changes.

I too remember the 1987 supernova and just how unexpected it was. Sanduleak was certainly a candidate star to go supernova but there was nothing, as far as I can remember, to indicate the supernova was imminent before it blew. The first indication that something had gone supernova was the increase in neutrino detection a few hours before it could be seen.

I noticed this during the autumn while looking at the night sky, I had tried to quiz myself by finding stars in the night sky by name. I managed to find Vega, Sirius, Antares, and many other common stars, until when I came across Betelgeuse, I was so confused. I hesitated to say whether it was Betelgeuse or not, but when I checked the surrounding stars, it proved to me that it was in fact it. Also, I'm really curious as to when the star does go supernova, because it is so close, would we actually be able to see the nebula? or even the neutron star left behind? I know the crab nebula if it wasn't so dim is almost half the size of the moon as seen from the ground. Surely Betelgeuse nebula would be bigger than the full moon?
