Laura, you should do a residency program where other makers can come stay in the house for a week and in exchange, they build a piece of furniture or art for the house. I would do it.

On the cost question - THANK YOU for making consideration of disposal costs for your entire house. In industrial chemistry, we say you pay for every chemical twice - one time to buy it, one time to dispose of it. But the reality is that should be true of everything; we just push that second cost to the future, hoping someone else will be the one to pay it. It is why recycling is 'too expensive' in some places, and really it is why recycling has to exist as a separate capitalist industry at all. If everyone looked at cost this honestly, part of the purchase cost would be required to pay for provisions for disposal. But despite the fact that the planet is becoming rapidly more hostile to human life, it is so, so rare - and SO refreshing - to see this attitude out in the wild.

I highly suggest considering enrolling in an upholstery course. I personally took one and found it to be incredibly enjoyable and informative. Not only did it provide me with practical skills to work with fabrics and textiles, but it also gave me a deeper understanding of furniture design and construction. This knowledge could prove to be invaluable if you're designing. Overall, I believe it's a great investment of time and resources for anyone interested in furniture design.

People who rebuild houses for resale have to worry about return on investment. People who rebuild houses for the love of craft, and for someone to live well in don't worry about the cost. But it is cool to learn from a craftsperson about methods, process, and real costs. Planning probides for the illusion of management.

Thank you for taking the time to do what you don't like. I was really interested in your comment about not following your design aesthetic for your own home. As a artist, I feel constrained to follow conventions with my home space. You work as an artist, responding to the materials in your hands. I really hope that you will change your mind about your own home construction. Being unconventional encourages others to take those chances. I know there's always a building code that one has to follow, but, as you say, it's far more interesting to free wheel. Of course, you need the skills and understanding to make that happen. I love your channel, Laura. It's inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts! Best, Angela

I’ve been managing my own house renovations and doing a lot of the work myself. Just some trades like plumbing, heating, electrical I have got companies doing. Except I planned all the electrical as I have background in electrics. I’ve also been doing all the ground works my self. Loved designing and doing the work myself. I also build furniture or resort furniture. Many of the pieces of furniture are either built by me or have been restored by me. But the restored furniture was built by my wife’s Grandfather. I love watching your videos creating the furniture or other things you create. The house build has also been fun.

I couldn't relate to you more @ 7 mins. We also rebuilt a very old house without tearing it down, but essentially built a brand new house including foundations. And would we do everything in the order we did it if we could do it again? No! But everything is so obvious in hindsight. Tearing down the house throws up its own set of difficulties. How you've gone about your journey is hugely inspiring and I wish I had known this channel before we were in construction. It would have eased my worry and not felt in such a rush to achieve everything so quickly. I couldn't imagine having a KZread channel to report to the entire time as well. Hang in there! The reward we feel from our house now is fantastic. It is a modest house but we adore every inch. Couldn't imagine ever moving now that we know and understand every inch of the place. You will feel the same!

Great answer to the money question by the way! Something I hadn't thought of. Kind of a blessing & curse situation :-D Love your videos, and if I want to see you doing something other than the house I can always watch the older ones!

Air B'nB and the short-term rental industry are really awful and have assisted in making cities unaffordable and gentrified. Please don't patronize that organization or any of their ilk. Someone suggested using the space for something like a residency program; people apply and you accept them based on how they will use the space. I know that is a lot more work than hiring a corporate behemoth to do all the work but something like a residency would be so much more fulfilling and in no way the blight on society that Air B'nB represents. Please think about it.

Open house, where your fans, viewers, neighbors could come by, is such a great idea 😁 i would even come, all the way from Denmark, if and when, you will have an open house 😊
