The issue is that he refuses to promote his music. Pillowtalk until today has 0 (!) Live performances. He cancelled many performances last minute due to his anxiety. I feel like his label wanted him to be big and spent a lot of cash on his first album but kinda gave up on him after he didn't want to promote his music. A shame. His second album has many good songs

I feel like he could do one of those performances that a lot of artists did during quarantine, where it was just them, a camera, and a band. He doesn't need to do live performances, but personal live, acoustic, or acapella performances can help promote his music.

I think it’s easier to be a more reserved artist when you already have a background. Zayn needed to do some of those interviews so that people know about him as a single artist and to his new audience outside of One Direction. People aren’t going to talk about you if they don’t know about you. It’s a difficult balance for every artist and I’m not sure Zayn got it right.

And then everything just went so fast that he didn’t had the time to think if this was something that he really wanted or just something he stumbled upon. The connection is important more than anything and I wish he understood that fully. EDIT ( FEBRUARY 8TH, 2022) : Wow okay, I seriously didn’t expect this much traction for my little comment 😅. But seriously, I honestly want zayn to do what’s best for him and I have no doubt he knows what he’s doing, I just wish he utilized more of his fanbase and built a stronger foundation with us. And OF course he doesn’t HAVE to tour , but it’d be nice for him to. That is all I meant by what I said. Also, I do NOT appreciate the k-pop slander in the comments. I have to say I agree though I believe he has the talent and personality to become a mainstream success BUT it may not be what he really wants which coming from 1d I can understand why he may not be as keen to be on that same level again. Though that is no excuse for not going on tours or doing performances here and there. I know he wants to let the music speak for itself but it's necessary to give back to the fans as well in terms of live performances. He has released three albums and he hasn't toured not one- that's preposterous to me. Luckily the fans are still here for him but it's still not right. I would love to go to one of his concerts and see Pillowtalk, Entertainer and more songs being performed and yet nothing.

Look I like Zayn and his music plus I consider myself to be a z-squad but fans excusing his lack of performances is just not going to fly anymore. I'm sorry but he is not the first nor will he be the last artist to deal with performance anxiety. Adele had it as well but guess what she did what she had to do to deal with it so she could go onstage and perform because it is A PART OF HER JOB. The same line of thinking should be applied to Zayn as well. He needs to stop using his anxiety as a crutch for not doing the basic minimum. There are lots of people in the industry who aren't half as talented as him but are still thriving based on sheer perseverance and hard work where as you have Zayn that has the undeniable talent but is letting it go to waste. He wants to be a musician and make millions but is not willing to play the game and be part of the mainstream music industry. Unfortunately you can't have it both ways. Prince had so many disagreements with Warner Bros and finding a way around them in the 90s becoming The Artist Formally known as Prince and changing his name to a symbol. He was ridiculed by the general public and the media alike (especially as WB had put alot of money into Prince)- but it later after many years revealed that it was the only legal way he could release music as WB owned his name 'Prince". 90s Prince is my fav. love the ballsy move to side step WB (meaning he was portrayed as being difficult, not as present on the media or shown as much as his 80s WB owned Prince days), playing funk music and his band the New Power Generation one of the most amazing bands to have graced the stage.

As an R&B fan from the U.K., this is so frustrating. We hoped ZAYN’s blend of Pop/r&b would give our scene more visibility. For those who don’t know, R&B is kinda a ‘cottage industry’ in the U.K., it’s just not that popular. Lots of r&b leaning singers who get signed will be discouraged from the genre and told by UK labels to do edm/house records instead. R&B music spoke to ZAYN tho, so for him, as a high visibility mainstream artist to drop his debut album, and it be so r&b influenced, that was exciting! The way he mixed Urdu into his interludes as well, I was so excited. I was thinking, he can really break boundaries and mix pop / r&b and / Asian sounds from his culture..so much opportunities and potential. The U.K. hasn’t had many international r&b stars so it actually meant a lot and we were excited for the future. As we were excited for Leona Lewis’ blends of r&b and pop, Jorja’s jazzy soulfulness and Labrinth’s endless creativity, they all unfortunately seemed to have fizzled in mainstream appeal. It’s a shame.

Zayn's music is really beautiful, and I particularly love how he incorporates Qawwali/Hindustaani ghazal elements into his vocals. Mind of Mine is one of my favourite albums, and Icarus Falls and Nobody is Listening had good songs as well. The problem is a complete lack of proper promotion and a niche. Icarus Falls also made the same mistake Nicki and Drake had with their last album - way too many songs, it gets boring and has no story or journey which ties a listener to the album.

And honestly, even if I hate RCA, I would be mad at him too bc he seemed as if he wanted to have a career but didn't want to do any sort of promo.

Being indy means doing promotion too, sometimes more than mainstream label artists. Zayn the past few years just didn't do any at all, and his 3rd album sadly was a complete flop as a result. Didn't even get Gold and most people didn't know he had music out. He should have at least performed on some late night talk shows, and interacted more online with fans. Collabing with other artists on their songs the past few years would have also helped because its exposure.

Hollywood is super toxic and he seems more of a family guy than the "tour everywhere, party it up" type of human. Also, if you watched the 1D Biopic, it looked like the life that Syco the Psycho made him and the boys live for so long, pushed him to his breaking point and he probably has never fully recovered. If he is happy with where he is, and, hopefully, still making music somewhere then that is good enough for me.

This is long omg ,I wanted this out of my chest for so long. Zayn has made it clear that he doesn't wanna do promos and interviews as he doesn't care about charts and awards. He'd rather have people discovering his music through others. Icarus falls is one of the best cohesive and concept album that has an interesting theme ,but he was sabotaged by his label guess who "RCA". They only sent few physical copies all around the world. For a person who doesn't do any promos and rarely steps out of his house ,he is doing pretty much good with his Spotify numbers and all. You cannot tell me he doesn't make one of quality music right now, just becoz it's not charting doesn't mean it's bad. He's definitely underrated but he likes to keep it that way. He's been dealing with so many bs ever since he stepped into the industry from being called a terrorist on national TV to being labelled as a drug addict and ungrateful to his previous band. Every other day there is an article coming out plotting against him, this will not be the same if it's just another yt mediocre artist. The way that pillowtalk was one of the biggest hits of the 2016 and still not nominated for Grammys shows how music industry is against him. The Grammys even changed the rules for the best new artist so that he couldn't be nominated and changed it right back next year shows the racism he faced. Coming to Yolanda, any sane person would know how problematic she is ,she has always been on his neck 24/7 talking shit about him. The court record proves that there were no physical altercation involved and Zayn plead to no contest to protect khai which means he didn't do it but will take charges. Yolanda leaked his daughters face to pap when Zayn publically made it clear that he wants to keep his daughter off the internet. The way he's been mistreated and people belittling his struggles is beyond me. P. S , He hasn't done any live performance or tour since 2016. Yet has 3 songs over 1 billion on Spotify despite having these not performed live. His first two albums has over 3 billion streams , Icarus falls specifically has over 5 billion even without any promo and being called a flop on charts. He has been blackballed from radio , so he doesn't have any radio promotion. Yet amazed so many hugely promoting artists. Don't call him flop when he's accomplished all this. He's making his music and being successful in his own way. No other artists can come close to him fr.

RCA Records is notorious for mishandling, sabotaging, and depriving such talented artists from reaching superstardom once they’ve stopped producing any commercial/financial success for their label. There’s an entire list of artists out there who have spoken out about this in the past such as Normani, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson, Pitbull, Tinashe, Doja Cat, and Khalid to name a few on top of Zayn speaking about it multiple times as well. I truly believe Zayn would have thrived into a global superstar if he had been signed to any other label, and hope that he will bounce back in any direction he wants to after he signs with a better label if he wants to continue going down the music route.

It just shows the artist its important to have a connection with fans. Just look at Taylor Swift for example. I don't listen to her music much but I believe she released two albums in 2020 titled folklore and evermore. But the twist is she released them without any prior promotions and just released one single for each album. Also, those two weren't really pop albums but it still dominated the charts. She also started re-recording her albums and even those albums came at number 1 on Billboard 200. Hate her or love her, she managed to get such a loyal fan-base which has helped her still produce great hits after being in the industry for more than a decade. I am pretty sure if Zayn said he was going to re-record his albums, it would be a financial disaster. But other than having a fan base, the music quality also matters. Like Justin Beiber still has a huge fan base but from reviews I heard his album Justice and Changes were not up to the mark and in general didnt get much of positive reviews. So, it goes hand-in-hand. You need a fan base and good quality music and a good public image

Purely speculation -- but it seems like Zayn wanted to live a more private life and raise his kid privately too. But because the Hadids are a public family and like to be in the spotlight (not throwing shade), Zayn has been struggling with that side of his life too. So he might just feel uncertain and is missing opportunities that seem obvious from the outside (being more active on Instagram for example). He was so young when he became famous and there may be some things that he never got the chance to figure out in terms of his life goals, priorities, etc. He does have the resources to work it all out, but may not have the insight to figure out what resources he actually needs, if that makes sense. Again I am just speculating.

I wonder how much of this is due to the fact that he and the rest of 1D were overworked during their time together and were basically taken away from any kind of resemblance of their former lives. Some like Niall and Liam clearly loved every second of it, whereas Zayn never really seemed fully okay or adjusted to this. He often spoke about his mother and his sisters and it must have been difficult being essentially trapped in a contract that required him to to be available and in front of everyone except his loved ones. It’s because of that that I believe that his lack of success is somewhat deliberate, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing for him not to want to have to be up close and constantly fan-baiting all the time. He doesn’t owe anyone anything, and I don’t think he wants to be riding the coattails of the 1D fandom. Perhaps he discovered that the fame game just isn’t for him.

I am glad he is keeping up to himself, even more happy that even after the Yolanda thing, he decided to tackle it privately, I am so glad that he has senses to keep it private. Of course I don’t know him so I am not going to take his side but I won’t even throw him under the bus. I do understand why his manager decided to put end to their relationship, I think it wasn’t temperament issue or anything but rather Zayn’s unwillingness to go out there. Being victim of anxiety, I cannot explain in words how hard it is for me to even go out, I cannot imagine how it must have been for him, I am so happy he is doing things how he wants to, I don’t give a damn, if he is promoting it or not, like if you like his music, it will speak to you, if not then stop following him. You don’t need to know ifs and buts of his private life and he made sure that no one knows, of course Yolanda ruined it all for him. I hope he learned at least one thing, that if he wants to remain private then at least be with someone who is as private as him. With that being said, god how insanely talented he is, I have always been a fan of his voice but dude has also artistry, if his music isn’t your cup of tea, it’s fine but it’s far from mediocre.

I think he really loves music and just wants to sing without the baggage that celebrities have to deal with, but he has to promote his stuff or at least sign to label that does heavy promotion for his next album, ads everywhere, a social media manager, someone who posts for him or something I know that’s not the type of artist he wants be but he has to go commercial just for a bit so he can have silent releases

I can connect to him through his music and I'm okay even if doesn't connect to his fans directly or something. He doesn't need that until he himself feels the need. So for me that's totally okay if he doesn't promote or doesn't give interviews. Honestly Zayn is holding himself back completely from his true potential. Maybe it's the fan in me but I believe even with the slew of bad press he can still make a come-back. I know it doesn't look great right now but even after all these years he still has a dedicated fanbase (it was evident during his incident with Yolanda Hadid- they defended him to the core on Twitter) and in my opinion he's still relevant amongst the general public. His music is still getting constantly streamed- has 3 songs with over a billion views. Zayn having those first two things is not easy especially since he doesn't do promo or performances. Harsh truth but because of those reasons he still is ahead of his 1d members except for Harry. Niall- has a fanbase that transferred over from the group but not very well known ( though I did enjoy Heartbreak Weather but it seems he will probably have moderate success out of the three) Louis- has a very dedicated fanbase (similar to Harry and Zayn) but again outside of the 1d fandom is not really known ( Honestly I don't think he'll have much success just in terms of the general measures we use for artists today- charts, accolades etc. but again he has a dedicated fanbase which can help him in his career somewhat- plus I read that all of his tour dates have been sold out and that he had to add extra ones due to popular demand so good for him) Liam- mini rant incoming lol- I am frustrated and disappointed in this particular member. He is the second member who I believe has the most potential and he's not using it. I want the best for Liam and I want to like his music but not right now with his type of musical output. Apparently his management dropped him so maybe things will change for the better. I've said this before but he needs to go back to the drawing board and recording studio and make music that best suits him not the genre that he personally likes. Unfortunately he has his work cut out for him because of LP 1 but I think like Zayn he can turn things around for the better. Though that is if he wants to. It all depends on him honestly.

Harry’s fans are venomous whenever anyone says anything… it’s too bad because it’s not his fault, but his fan base tends to be so overly sensitive and their default response is anger which turns a lot of people off to giving his solo music a chance. I enjoy it but I purposely avoid going anywhere near his fan base. I try to go back in time to the days where I could listen to an artist and have zero connection to anyone else who is a fan (meaning back in the 90’s when you could enjoy things without the burden of the “stans” on the artist/influencing your opinion of the artist and their work). Unfortunately the fans tend to reflect badly on the artist now more than ever before because of how connected everyone is all of the time. Another example are Ariana Grandes fans, or the Taylor Swift fans. Fans that are so overly sensitive and nasty when they *think* you’ve insulted their “queen” that they will harass you until you beg for mercy or delete your social media presence. You basically have to go into hiding if you accidentally offend Queen Ari.

@@brittneyking4284 yess.. he'll bounce back. He's really passionate sbout his music. In one of his interviews last year, he said slow and steady wins the race. I feel he's taking his time but will definitely get back on stage and show the world the real talent he has. He also signed with CAA in 2020. But i guess the pandemic and now this yolanda altercation has hindered his plans. He just need lots of support from his family and fans. I have full faith in him. He never disappoints with any of his songs, and his voice is such a therapy. I think he hasn't even reached his full potential yet and people in the comment section are acting as if he's finished as a musician. You can see he works really hard for his music. And hard work will definitely pay off one day.

You captured him perfectly with your last line - his potential is more interesting than the music he released. I love his voice, it's beautiful & a joy to listen to. With that said, I struggle to find a really good song from him that I can just play on repeat.

I understand that he wants his private life very far from the headlines and that he doesn't want to do tones of promotion, being in 1D damaged him deeply and I don't think enough people understand this, anxiety doesn't just go away, or maybe he just doesn't want to tour. He wants something different from what his fans want, his fans don't just see him as a singer, they act like they know him personally and talk about his life as if they were close to him, they see him as what he dislikes so much, a celebrity. Poor man has been through a lot. But I do want to remark that he is not in an independent label, big labels want money from their artist and when they are not profitable anymore, they get rid of them.

There are a only a few current artists that can drop albums with little to no promotion, Beyoncé and Frank Ocean namely. Zayn is definitely not there yet, I really wish he'd do some promo so people would actually know he has music out there.

Now idk about his music but as someone who watched Yolanda on that reality show: she has an obsession with her daughters particularly Gigi & Gigi’s weight & seems to have issues with boundaries with her children. It’s weird & im sure that doesn’t help a new family figure things out.

He is so underrated but that’s because he does not market himself. And he knows that. I know he does not think he should but baby… you gotta market your music. Unless you don’t want a music career anymore. I know you’re private but being private does not mean don’t market yourself. Just control what you talk about and who you talk to. As for these charges, I think this is a classic case of controlling mom budding in to her children business. It so happens that Zayn was with the shit and was not thinking when that altercation happened. I think it was over exaggerated. But Zayn has a lil history of letting his emotions get the best of his ass. Ain’t tryna push zodiacs signs but we Capricorn’s have that issue.

@rxy like interviews. Beyonce simply doesn’t do them because of this exact reason. She’s a private person. She doesn’t like her words being twisted. She controls her narrative. I can tell he’s a private person who’s been scorned before and that’s why he doesn’t do much talking.

I don't care at all what world says about Zayn.I just love him as an artist and as a person. He is the most honest artist and even person in the industry. He doesn't do his music for money, fame or trophies. For him music is his passion as art. If you really want to know about his own perspective then listen to his two albums 1.YELLOWMETAL 2.YELLOWTAPE You'll get everything that is inside his brain.

I love Mind Of Mine and like Icarus Falls, Nobody’s Listening is ok, and while I wish he was more interactive with fans and the public… I’m actually perfectly fine with him just dropping music and going - maybe a performance here and there. I don’t need him to be public person. If he wants to just release music and live his life in private/away from the celebrity time, that’s fine. He also just has to accept the fact that without doing those “celebrity” things, his album sells won’t be as high. Even with a label because a label will understandably focus more on the one that’s out there doing interviews, photo shoots, concerts, tours, guest spots, etc than the one that does a music video and then disappears.

Zayn had no business being famous given how much he wanted to be private and his axinety. Given how life can be when you're famous. After leaving 1D, he should've just left the business all together.

I got from *NSYNC & BSB boy band times. I had just graduated when 1D came out and they were equivalent to cheesy Bieber to me. I was all in with the awesome emo pop punk metal stuff at that point. But omg did Harry steal my heart when he dropped his first solo album. Zayn could have stole a lot of new fans hearts too if he would have done things differently. But I had anxiety my whole life so I understand if he doesn’t want to woo crowds like Mr. Styles. Hopefully he comes out with an amazing personal album one day because I would definitely give it a listen.

Zayn is the kind of artist that got a chance in the music industry, but saw that the glamour wasn't worth it, so he took his fans, his music, and now he does his art for who wants it, being himself the first one. Because he was in one direction, his choice of being out of the spotlight will always sound intriguing to the media, but he seems confortable with things like they are (not talking about personal life!)

He will always be in the spotlight for the rest of his life, and i think that this reality is too much for him. I only hope he can go through all of this healthy and not overusing drugs...

Its actually quite sad like many others here stated, because his music is true art. Ive never been a fan of 1D, i did not really enjoy their style, but when Zayn went solo i started listening to his music. He has a great vocal range, the lyrics are lovely and the whole setting surrounding melodies and instruments is absolutely supreme. However, i discovered him through the spotify "NEW" section. His refusal to promote his artwork or even perform is LARGELY affecting his career, because noone knows shit about when or if any new music drops even though he has a lot of fans.
