The Era of Britney Spears Copycats

To put it simply, Britney Spears came at the right time, with the right music, and the perfect appeal. From panicking record labels to short charted pop stars, they all wanted their Britney reign.

None of these girls including Brittney even come close to Christina. Not even close! Brittney is a showman and hard worker. it's a double-edged sword, because these girls could have said "no," and walked away. They chose to do this. but the reality is, if i was 18 and someone said, "here, do this, act like this, sing this, dance like this," and we'll give you millions of dollars and try hard to make you a household name......i would have said yes. at that age, you're being offered the chance of a lifetime. the smart move is to take it. are you being manipulated, yes? are you being forced? no. you could walk away....but you didnt. I dont feel sorry for them. maturity means realizing that nothing in this life is free and that actions have consequences. sing the songs, take the money, do what they say. or....become an accountant. or "sandwich artist" at starbucks. or...just another doctor (Nothing wrong with that...but rich and famous vs. doctor or lawyer?..... hard to say. Me? I'm a doctor. If I had the choice....i'd chose rich and famous and get my education later, if i really wanted it....but with celebrity money, the thought of 36 hour shifts, splattered with blood, and smelling like disinfectant and missing my anniversary dinner....doesnt seem like much of a choice. Either way is a good life...but rich and famous is the kind of life very very few people get a shot at)

@@slchance8839 please don’t downplay your success as a doctor although I completely get where you’re coming from! Everyone is told as a kid that becoming a doctor is one of the most respectable careers you could go into and I admire all doctors. The reality as you described obviously is nothing like endless amount of money and fame and getting to not do 10% of the work you’re probably doing everyday so I completely get where you’re coming from. I think it’s sad these girls were told to put their authenticity on the back burner for money and fame at such a young age which i can definitely imagine has left a lot of these girls with a bittersweet feeling as they got older. Unfortunately this is a business and it’s about what sells. Britney herself had to drop her own authenticity to become Britney Spears and just because it worked extremely well for her it’s not what she truly wanted. She originally had a very deep soulful voice and was forced to vocal fry to appeal to a younger audience and to men. She was also over-sexualised. It’s a way bigger issue with the entertainment industry than girls being “forced” to copy Britney because that wasn’t even really Britney either.

@@psychomaia thank you for your well-expressed and thoughtful response. i like what you said about britney dopping her own authenticity and over-sexualization. Considering she was a Disney Mousketeer (from the age of 4, I think) and that Disney asks it's teen Mousketeers not to wear two-piece bikinis (over-sexualization and brand image). At some point, though, Britney would have to become an adult. Even a sexualized adult. Sadly, we all smile and laugh a little less as we get older. Are we sadder? No, wiser. Are we miserable? No, just less surprised by misery and suffering. As children we're sheltered from harshness (rightfully). And we can smile more by seeing life through the eyes of an innocent and young Britney. Is the crime that she grew up too fast? Or that she grew up at all? I also like that you addressed it as the entertainment industry. Industry is the correct word. The reality is that MOST things are an industry, with products and customers. Educations sells information, agenda, and credentials ($200,000 for a piece of paper (diploma)...that is recognized in one country.....but not another -- try practicing US law in Switzerland. Or vice versa ) Truck driving schools sell a skill. Health care sells drugs and service. Restaurants sell a food and experience. Night clubs sell a lifestyle image. "Forever 21" sells an image of a younger self. Me? I'd shop at a "Forever 41," if they sold me the middle-aged WISDOM.

This was pre-social media and she was still so omnipresent. Anytime you went to a store, you see Britney on tabloid & magazine covers. Anytime you turned on the radio, Britney was on. Anytime you turn on MTV, Britney’s music videos played. Anytime Britney did something, she was international news. She was one of Time magazines most influential people for 2013 because of her role on The Voice and she was the highest paid judge on that panel and the only woman. She won another Grammy and had multiple hit collaborations that year too. Before the pandemic she had a world tour and a Las Vegas residency. She’s accomplished a lot in the last decade. Right now she has a Spanish EP which is critically acclaimed and the first single just went Gold so it’s safe to say that Christina is flourishing and she still has a net worth of $160 million. Probably due to the fact that she literally gets paid millions just to do one singing gig. Britney Spears hasn’t had a hit album in about 10 years either so I’m not sure why people try to make it seem as if Christina’s commercial appeal says something about her. Britney isnt so much an entrepreneur or an artist....she's a PRODUCT sold to US. Her talent and image is the quality of the product. How do we know this? Look at Madonna. Madonna was the Britney of the 80s - watch concert footage, girls going crazy trying to look just like her. After Madonna (and George Michael) broke from their pop contracts and started producing their own **art**. Their sales and image went waay down. Still good art. Still respectable, but with a major label to advertise and SELL them....you see how REALLY loved they are....you can measure it....in dollars. Less dollars = less popularity. If you're super popular, people will spend THOUSANDS to buy your merch and see you in concert. Money is how we keep score. Britney had the highest score in the early 2000s. Copycats...not so high. Not saying she's not talented, but if her number is down...that's how you can measure staying power.

Do you guys have receipts on her being banned from radio? Why would radio ban a money maker like Britney F***ing Spears? In my opinion the most logical reason her singles underperforming back then was because the record label did need it when her albums were selling millions of copies in one week. Britney started getting lots of No.1 songs during & after the Circus era because her albums wasn't selling 2 million in one week. The label focused more on her singles after Blackout era. I'm sure if the label pushed harder "Toxic" would've been No.1. Similar to how Taylor Swift gets number ones even when her albums sells a million in one week.

I do believe her albums did very well they didnt need to worry about the singles!!.. it was just funny how she was so famous and larger than life and media constantly put her down in her prime 🤷‍♀️ ..the girl was a household name within her first year of having an album!

i mean, she still does "stand a chance". she has had hits from 1999-2011(maybe 2013). thats 12 years of longevity which is alot longer than many of the main pop girls, especially considering her being inactive from 2004-2007 and then the breakdown. she came back after being the worlds biggest bald laughing stock with womanizer and with all the exposure from the conservatorship i think she could do it again

People tend to think that she was in Britney's shadow but she really was a huge force in pop music. Although I can't tell that Britney is people's choice because she was the first pop princess during the early 2000s, but lemme say that inside of the industry, a lot of artists and other Christina co-stars in MMC are really amazed by her talent and charisma. To this day, Heidi Montag's Superficial is still one of the worst albums I've ever heard. So no, personally, I don't think it got anything other than what it should have deserved. I like Heidi, she seems like a genuine person, moreso now than back in the day, but I just think that album is plain bad. Her stolen demo, Dramatic with Britney Spears, was a way better song and beat the shit out of literally every single song on that album haha. I think the songwriting wasn't the worst part of the album. Her vocals consistently being drowned in autotune didn't help, but what did it most for me was, oddly enough, the production. I don't think the production helped her at all. If you wanna take a look at how you can make a quality album without having all too much vocal talent, but just money to spend - take a look at Paris Hilton's 2006 album Paris.
