Only headstock I've ever broken was on an Epiphone SG when I was 15, purely because I stupidly left it leaning against a chair and it fell. Never done it since. I'd say most serious breaks to a guitar occur due to simple carelessness.

I remember when Reverb came about. It was great as the community was almost 95% musicians. Then stores and Amazon sellers came in and it turned into a nicer looking eBay. Refund scams, broken equipment, and Reverb constantly aiding with the scammer especially with PayPal’s return policy. Once I got my rig settled I never looked back.

Absolutely... ebay was the same way in the beginning. It was like going to a garage sale and finding everything you wanted. Retailers and greed on eBay's part destroyed it.
I’ve really moved away from Reverb shopping. So much stuff is overseas and I’m just not interested in supply chain issues and the possibility of fakes. I’ll still buy and sell pedals, but any big money purchase I’ll do through small shops direct.

Just a bit younger. But I bought an amp at a pawn shop. Somebody got in trouble and received close to nothing for it. The recycle goods shop in town is better. Almost no guitars, but every now and then an instrument is given to that shop.

"tons of mojo" on Reverb just means "is broken and worn but still plays somehow"
12:27 A knob with a set screw is will work on pots with half a shaft missing. I broke a shaft of my V but still put on knobs with a set screw. The knob on the broken pot followed the pot perfectly, with no "wobble" as you turned it.
These vintage guitars with “good” prices are more like zombie guitars to me. If we can already identify all these wears so easily, imagine what’s hidden.

I feel like that 65 sg was probably a really good player then over the years cheaper parts added to replace missing or damaged parts until it presumably met the floor and broke. Honestly I’d buy it if I had the money.
I literally saw that explorer on reverb and after the shock wore off I laughed so hard
yes the ES-335 was an off-white when I got it that slowly become more creamy (which I like) over time it's good guitar but I swapped my pickups years ago to some dirty fingers

I signed up for a Reverb account--for the first and only time--a few years ago and my account has been under review ever since. I even tried reaching out to their customer support to at least get a reason why or something, anything. No response. I eventually came to the conclusion that I wasn't missing much.
Awesome Walmart everyone!
My first Gibson back in 85 was a GK-55 bolt on neck thing kind of like the invader. It was pretty cool it had a fine tune tail piece.
0:58 I’ve always loved the inverse of the head stock shape at the high end of the neck.
About the explorer. Had something similar happen to mine that part at the end broke off and needed to be glued back
Was looking at a listing the other day. Full guitar in photo. Later down in the description they say neck not included. Super frustrating
I live in Korea. Great to see one of the shops get a mention.
I wonder if that Explorer wasn't previously owned and used by Alllen Collins....stolen from the crash site, refinished and partially repaired? That body break also looks like it has a bit of fire damage to it.

The Gibson Raw series were an cool affordable line. I wish I had bought the blue Les Paul. These were on sale forever here in the UK. I think the Gibson Les Paul JR and Special Tribute Double Cuts will be collectable at some point in the future, especially the blue ones. Another goodlooking Gibson budget line is Futura...that green SG...yum..
Cool idea to check out some of the stuff on Reverb. Thank you for the video!

Yes. The lesson is: this will happen again. When you buy a 10 grant second hand guitar today, chances are your family who inherit your guitars will sell it for more than 100,000 dollars. But you are stupid, huh?
Anybody know something good to use to clean tolex? I have an Eric Johnson Strat that came with the Fender pro case, or wherever the hell they call them: the G&G hardshell that come they've used forever that come with the higher end American production models. It's a blonde case that was near an oil lamp, so there's soot on one side. It's not terrible like it was in a fire, just dingy. I was just going to get leather and upholstery cleaner, but thought maybe there's something that works especially well that I don't know about.
the 65 sg and the explorer are cool. i like when you can really see its age. its fixed and still working. just like with old cars. i prefer them when they have patina rather than completely renovated. because at that point it might as well have been reproduced.
It's interesting that everyone hates overlapping frets just because gibson didn't do them. Gibson didn't do them because it allows them to be sloppy on fret ends and belt sand them, and then you lose the overlap on the fret edges over binding. And as time has gone on, Gibson has decided that it's too much work to clean up their work after they run a pattern bit up the fretboard to knock the binding down after it's butted against the edges.
During the first week of January, I plan on purchasing another acoustic guitar and it will be used for recording. I prefer to use mics rather than the pickups but I'm not stuck on that. I am open-minded about purchasing a 12 string too. I only have $750.00. If I gave you 750 to buy an acoustic for me - for recording - what would you buy? What about a 12 for 750? I respect your opinion and will likely follow through with your suggestion. Or maybe you have an acoustic to sell? Thanks
These full maple SG are absolutely magnificient and real killer to play, I wish they weren't that rare...
Rumble Seat Music has listed some pretty nice guitars lately. I recently picked up an all original 1970 Les Paul Custom (except for a refret) from them. Those t-tops sound really good and it even came with the original case. What really sold me on this particular guitar is that I am only the second owner! 🤘🏻🤘🏻

@@12345b67 we worked out a deal and I ended up paying 6k for that specific guitar. for it’s condition and originality it would probably have listed in the low 7’s. basically your range on that guitar should be between 5500 and 8000, of course, depending on it’s originality and condition. in most cases the higher you go in that range the longer it’ll take to sell. there are definitely fewer buyers out there looking to spend that kind of money on one guitar, lol.
you say about the invader that there are a lot of better guitars to be found at that price point, and honestly i'm curious- could you do a video talking about like the 10 best gibsons you can find for under a grand, based on playability or possible future resale value?
@voornaam3191

I'm afraid you are gonna have to drop the word Gibson here. When people pay 500 bucks just for that word Gibson, you should find the best guitar at 900 dollars. And forget over rated brands. Are you stupid?
12:26 “There’s no point, just replace it at this …time.” Smooth, Austin 😂
Love that Explorer. Overpriced but tons of mojo with that guitar. The stories it could tell...
My 83 explorer has more belly wear, but it also came with a kahler.
I'm the buyer of the 65' SG... I'm hoping the shaven down neck will be good for me, as I have hand-issues... I have all the original parts in a drawer, so it's kindoff a steal for me. The market is ridiculous!
Just this month I've got the Gibson USA Tony Iommi SG, the Sire H7 and a Eastwood HB-TL. And I'm a drummer. I love collecting guitars but I don't have the money for much high end stuff. I try to get signature guitars. They don't take up as much room as the drums that I would like to buy up.

Hey we were browsing on reverb at the same time last night.
I bought my first guitar from that guitar shop that randomly shows up at 5:54.
You forgot to mention import duty on top of the exorbitant shipping you'd pay when a guitar is imported from a foreign country.
Conclusion, there are a hell of a lot of people ruining great guitars and selling them like they are BETTER than the original. But it is damage, damage, worse damage and more damage. Nice!
This is so weird... you keep saying mint condition, mint condition, meanwhile the murphy lab is making a killing... whats going on ???
What is your opinion on Gibson Murphy SGs. Will they hold their money? Are they worth the €4,500 and upwards being asked?
Somebody snatch up that Explorer, with that kind of damage it may have been previously owned by Pete Townshend!! 🤣
The ES-335 is a good deal and Lee at Grining Elk is the MOST HONEST Guitar dealer I have ever dealt with. He knows his stuff and was around in the 1980s and has owned almost ever cool Gibson guitar you can think of. If you call him and talk with him you will most likely be able to work out a deal. He NEVER buys/sells sub-par product, all his guitars are in very good to mint condition and he prices all his guitars very fair.

I'm not a collector, so I will jump on guitars that are a little banged up as long as it's structurally sound (no pun), priced right and it's a model I want. I honestly don't get people who put guitars for sale with things like missing knobs, pickguard screws, etc. Things that you can buy at a guitar center for less than $10, that without you end up losing hundreds because potential buyers just see it and say "Next," so you sit on it forever.

@@carlitobrigante330 if it's relevant. Newer production models any changes are usually upgrades so they'll throw that in there. A bigger issue I've found, more now than 5 years ago is people apparently being unaware that scuffs, scratches, frets in need of crowning (or even leveling for that matter) disqualifies it from being "mint" "like new," etc. Or that the fact that you just paid to have the frets leveled doesn't mean it's worth more money, it just means it plays how it should.
