Meanwhile, Ultra have made tens (hundreds?) of millions of dollars off his prior work because every time its at a legit/big club, movie, Spotify, KZread music, Tidal, whatever... they're the ones getting a cut, not Joel. Maybe he gets some tiny residual. Joel doesn't have the Taylor Swift deal where he can re-record it and own the "re-masters". He can't even make a remix of Faxing Berlin because Ultra owns it and they have to give permission to release it... but Ultra would then again get a cut. I studied deadmau5 livestreams for 2 years. I know exactly how he produces music. I flawlessly remade ghost n stuff and Strobe as a training exercise. I made the veldt in real time as deadmau5 was making it live. I sent him a revision with a bell chime melody and he acknowledged it was good and he used the bells. I haven't made music in 10 years. Deadmau5 can say that now because it looks so easy to be independent. Back when he and Kaskade started out you couldn't just run to TikTok and pay influencers to use your song. Early social media (Myspace days) literally didn't have enough traction. Plus with streaming now even artists that own their master's have to have their song steamed millions of times before they even see $5. Artists want their masters so they can make the same mistake of reselling them to a bigger conglomerate for...... *MONEY*

There's more than one kind of record deal and what you've described is just a fraction of actual offers. In the majority of cases the label is more or less just a distro. They'll pay to have say, 1,000 CDs pressed and then be in the negative in regards to that 900 - which they know they will eventually sell and profit from because more people know the distro than your unheard-of band, and then you can sell your 100 copies and hopefully make a few bucks at the end of the day and introduce your music to people.

He can't even make a remix of Faxing Berlin because Ultra owns it and they have to give permission to release it... but Ultra would then again get a cut. Its about ownership over your own creations, not just $. Its tough when you're broke in your early 20s, but Chance the Rapper, Joel, T Pain, and like every musician these days is saying "own your own stuff". The 90s / early 2000s record label days are over.

People hate on Joel for his blunt honesty, but seriously... his wisdom in the business and audio engineering is unrivaled. He's not going to feed you a line. He's going to tell you how it is. And if you ask him advice, he's going to give you direct advice without the sugar coating. And he knows more than 80% of the other producers going when it comes to engineering sound. He knows what he's talking about. always.

I met with Joel aka deadmau5 when I was 17 years old. He got me an opening at Ultra festival over 11-12 years ago. I wish he told me to safely store my masters. I lost all my masters due to a broken laptop in 2014... I had a baby and lost ambition for music. I recently had discovered health issues so I am inspired to make music again. I am now making music again and building my makeshift studio again. I am returning to make original music

Man this makes me sad because I know mau5 would absolutely polish up those mixes of his classics. When I hear Random Album Title, I can tell the mixes were a bit rough, especially on the low end on some tracks. Still mixed really well, but I can see why he feels they weren’t up to par when you listen back now

Yeah it's true labels can increase your visibility and give you marketing, but it's a business like any other. Signing with the label gets you in the room with people that push the gigs. In your promotional radio one wouldn't have busted it out so much if that major label wasn't on the contract.
*MONEY*
Micro label FTW ? I am sure there is a way for better publishing (for both artists and labels) this way.
I'll agree with that.
I respect deadmau5 for his genius and his talent, but I strongly dislike his arrogance. “Don’t sign with a major label” ok like really? I’m sure we have seen his streams where he sits in a $100k+ home studio with Fukn moogs lining the room in a desk centered in middle with an even more expensive sound board setup and he is gona sit there and say “ there was other ways I could of got the money.” I didn’t need a label that bad they didn’t do anything for me” like bro they brought your music from inner underground circles to mainstream that made u shit ton of money to sit in your fancy house in your multi million dollar studio to be able to become extremely popular and profitable and relevant enough for you to be interviewed just to turn around and say “yea I didn’t really need the big label” like yea every dj/produce who is worth an ounce of something can make good shit with what they got but there is NO DENYING that the ability to upgrade your toolbag because of the money received from label didn’t directly impact your sound for the better. Guys just an unnecessary ass lol. Like he’s a genius and I respect his work but he’s an ass
