What Retinol Does and Why You NEED It!! | Dr Sam Bunting

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What EXACTLY does retinol do? It is one of the most googled questions in skincare - and it's a really important one to answer, particularly for those of you who might be new to my channel. Retinol is probably the ingredient that gets the most attention and interest in skincare, and with good reason. It does so much!
There's a lot of fear and anxiety around starting retinol; but then there is also so much promise. Ultimately, it's the golden ingredient that's able to deliver everything from solving acne to improving the appearance of ageing skin.
In today’s video, I go deep on the science of retinoids and hopefully share some new insights to help you understand what they can do for you (answer: a lot!!) Knowledge is the way to conquer any anxiety you might have around starting the most meaningful skincare relationship you can have.
As always, thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

Hi Dr. Sam, thank you for such scientific and informative content! May I ask you if topical isotretinoin works as well for anti-aging purposes as tretinoin? The reason why I ask is I live in Switzerland, and at two different dermatologists when I asked for topical tretinoin they both gave me topical isotretinoin, saying they are the same thing for anti-aging. But are they really? It is difficult to find reliable sources on the internet. Thank you SO much!

Have you heard about prolonged tretinoin use thinning the skin? I was wondering what you know about it. Also, when using tretinoin, if your skin becomes very sensitive with regular use, what would you recommend? If inflammation aggravates aging, wouldn’t it be best not to sensitise the skin? Which ingredients might be anti-inflammatory? 🙏☺️

Please be assured that retinoids thicken both the epidermis and the dermis, ultimately leading to an improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, surface texture and overall glow. If skin is feeling sensitive, try reducing the frequency of your retinoid use and make sure that you wear SPF daily!

I use tretinoin 0.5% and my skin tolerates it quite well, however, I find after days of consecutive use my eyes will become incredibly dry, sensitive and sore to the touch. There is no reddening, but it can be quite uncomfortable. Are there any solutions to help allevitate this issue? I don't get the tret anywhere near my eyes, but know it does tend to migrate to the eye area as the product sinks into the skin.

I am not sure about the efficacy of using tret the way you are. The method my doctor had me start worked wonderfully for me. I had a really bad experience with tret many years ago and was a bit afraid to go on it to help with skin texture and wrinkles. My doctor put me on the most conservative regimen to build up to using higher dosages. I started on the lowest dosage of tret, .01% one day per week for 4 weeks. If there was no issue I could move up to 2 days per week for 4 weeks and so forth. Once I got up to the number of days per week I wanted to use it I would stay on that dosage for a while. Eventually I moved up to .025% and started the process again, 1 day per week for 4 weeks until I built up to where I wanted to be. I am now on the .05% and have had zero issues with irritation, peeling, flaking etc… by following this method.

Treti targets absolutely all our retinoid receptors (6 in total: 3 RAR + 3 RxR). Tazarotene targets only a couple: RAR-β and RAR-γ so, in theory, treti should be more powerful. I've recently heard this too. Listening to a few folks (Dermatologists and eye doctors) it seems that if you really want to get the benefits near your eyes then a) use a retinol eye cream not your full face tret; b) still don't go fully into the orbital bone, just stay at the perimeter; and c) cover the area of the eye closest to the lash line, including the lids, with petroleum jelly first to be sure no retinol can migrate there. I use tret on most of my face, but use Beauty of Joselon retinal eye cream just under my brow bone, to the side of my eyes and in my 11s, on my nose, and just inside my orbital area above my cheekbones, but not going within 1 cm of the lower eyelashes. So far I've had no problem, but I still can't know for sure this is ok, because dry eye from retinoids can take years to develop. 🤷 I'm hoping that using my red light therapy mask will take sufficient care of my eyelid and directly under my eye.

There is no harm done if you use retinol at morning. The worst thing that can happen is that it doesnt work and you lose "a bit of money". If you live in an area like me that its almost dark whole day in winter and so cold that sunlight sure cant reach your skin then morning retinol will definitely work (not breaking down by sun light) just as well as night retinol .
