What is the science behind retinol?
Retinol belongs to the powerful family of molecules known as retinoids. These are vitamin A derivatives with multiple functions in the skin including reduction of pigmentation, improved cellular turnover, stimulation of collagen synthesis, & reduction of oil production.
What are the benefits of retinol?
Improved skin texture & quality. Retinol has antioxidant, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, as well as antibacterial properties, hence its use in acne prone skin.
Anti-aging. Retinol decreases pigmentation but increases collagen production. This results in clearer skin texture with less wrinkles & smaller pores.

Don't forget to mention that retinol should never be used around the eyes (even though you would really want to) because it is proven to damage the oil glands that moisturize the eye and over time can lead to dry eye disease (which may even be irreversible). There are way too many dermatologist videos on the topic that only consider the effects on the skin, but if you also check out what the opthalmologists are saying, they're pretty clear on the issue...

Damn, I'd better stop using it around my eyes! I already have dry eyes to begin with. But what if it migrates there from elsewhere on your face, since people usually use it at night and then go to sleep with their face on a pillow?
@aszechy
Жыл бұрын
@@SchlichteToven Yes, that can be an issue too, but I guess they don't know exactly. The video I saw said to leave out a huge area corresponding to where a sleep mask would be - that's essentially half your face... (I personally don't leave that much out but try to put the retinol on at least an hour before bed so it has time to absorb properly before I hit the pillow.) I guess you could try to experiment, maybe cut it out entirely for a while and see if your eyes improve.

I am so happy you mentioned that I can keep on using azelaic acid. I have rosacea (but I'm controlling it very well after realising I'm lactose intolerant) but azelaic acid helps my skin massively. I'm super new to retinol so I found this video very informative :)

Hello sir Davin. I would like to thank you for showing me the DermaRollers. My face definitely improved since then.

Thank you so much for this video ! I learned so much ..
I use my retinol around my eyes, but it is a granactive retinoid and I ALWAYS put eye cream over it. I was told to do this by my optician, I wear contact lenses - so have to be careful around the eye area. So far so good!
An excellent video on a complex subject - one important note: using Retinol increases sun sensitivity which means you need to protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen which should be applied every single day.

I heard from a dermatologist that actually this is not true (only if you took retinol aka vitamin A orally for acne). But of you don't use sun protection after using retinol, it's like you did nothing for your skin.
You are my favorite Dermatologist

thank you for this very direct, simple, and practical advice for skin care. I have been using them for quite some time my retinol from Korea and Niacinamide- it works great on my skin, especially on the face. My face is always hydrated and soft. Thank you Dr Lim

Thank you, especially for the information on what to use with retinol and what not to use with it. I have a bottle of The Ordinary .05% and a bottle of 1%. I was reluctant to start retinol but now I will proceed.
very useful! thank for the insight. love from Indonesia
Thanks a lot for the video❤❤❤ perfectly explained
Sweet and short! Thanks
Important to mention that when using retinol one must be extra careful with the sun, since retinol drastically increases sensitivity to UV light, broad spectrum SPF is a must. Another thing - it is forbidden for pregnant and nursing women. Even if the chance of it affecting the baby is small - better to be on the safe side.

From what I know you can use any time of the year but must be extra careful with the sunlight. Any well known brand would do. It must be high protection (40 and above) and preferably broad spectrum (against both UVA and UVB rays).

Interesting, because as someone with acneic skin, I've been prescribed to use Epiduo which actually is a combination of adapalene (a topical retinoid) WITH benzoyl peroxide...it's a gel that I use only at night and I'm on the "extra strong" formulation of it now, and it's helped my skin a lot.

Great video. I was surprised that you didn’t mention to always apply a moisturizer after you apply your retinol at bedtime. This is separate from products mentioned that you can apply an hour before or after. Moisturizer should almost always be applied after retinol unless there are special considerations or recommendations made by an expert or something. It’s Retinol 101.
Yes it’s a good simple and straightforward video. Thank you for sharing

In retrospect, I should have watched this video first before blasting my skin off with differin by applying it 3 nights in a row. I thought because it was the OTC formulation and I regularly use acids that my face could handle it 😅 And thank you for the section on what skin products can and cannot be used with retinoids! Very vital for the crazies who like to YOLO with a bunch bottles from the ordinary (can't be me 😜)

Guys, the doc said we should not mix certain ingredients, but if they are already integrated in a product by the manufacturer it is most likely ok.

The best advice from the best dermatologist doctor!!!!!!
Niacinamid and retinol are awesome together. I only use these two products together and they are working just fine. I think less is more in skincare. I actually use topical retinoid on my face (0.5% retinal) which works just fine for me and I have sensitive skin. For my eyes I use 0.2% retinol in a cream which should be fine for the oil glands too.

This explains so much, im a ginger so i wanted to give it a try, burned like hell so tried a different one . Tur s out they all had hyliron acid and vitamin c as well
Useful ❤
It’s understood that acids might make it more prone to irritation if you have sensitive skin but it’s not exactly ‘bad’ for your skin. I read that not mixing acids with retinol came from a study that has now been disproven and using both in moderation especially with a good moisturizer is fine. I wonder what anyone’s experiences have been…

It all depends on your skin's tolerance level of whichever ingredients (acids or anything else) you want to use. My skin won't tolerate tretinoin (not yet, anyway) but does well with retinaldehyde, and I can layer it 1-3 times a week with a leave-on 10% AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) exfoliant. I can also use vitamin C (ascorbic acid) with it. Some people's skin won't tolerate vitamin C even without vitamin A (using this label to cover retinoic acid and all its derivatives like retinol) involved, so those people obviously shouldn't try layering vitamin C and vitamin A. Some people's skin is sensitive to glycolic acid at any strength but will tolerate mandelic acid, a gentler AHA; they might be able to use mandelic acid alongside vitamin A. If in doubt, the safest route, besides asking your own doctor, is to alternate days or time of day: use vitamin A at night and other active ingredients in the morning, or use vitamin A on a completely different day than other actives.
Watched a biochemist talk about the dangers of retinol, and how in the long run it can effect your natural cell turn over. Not sure if anyone else has heard of this? Or if there’s studies on this?
Thank you
Great 👍 thank u.
Hey Guys, You can in fact used Retinol with Vitamin C during the night. Here is how you do it. Cleanse your face and let it dry then apply vitamin C, wait for at least 30 mins for your skin ph to come back to normal (since Vit. C has lower ph than retinol) then apply retinol. Wait 5 to 10 min then apply moisturizer with niacinamide. Now if you have sensitive skin, I would only use one of the two product until you skin get used to it.
