What Relationships In Medical School Are Like | Q&A With My Wife

Madison and I get so many questions about what being married in medical school is like (from the perspective of the medical student and non-medical student in our case). Along this journey to becoming a doctor you'll often feel pressured to delay seeking a partner or growing a family, and we hear things like "study now, relationships later." But your journey does not have to be like that if you don't want it to be. I know I didn't!
Relationships are hard no matter what you do, and there are certainly unique challenges medical students face. We hope this videos sheds light on what those challenges are, but most importantly how you can overcome them!
1:06 - How often do you end up having to choose time for med school or your spouse?
2:30 - The dynamics (good & bad) of marrying someone who doesn't do medicine.
4:33 - Does Madison have any ill feelings working while you're "just going to school?"
5:30 - What are 3 advices to maintain a healthy relationship during med school?
8:43 - What boundaries have you both set?
9:22 - Advantages/disadvantages of being married in med school?
11:50 - How do you balance faith, school & work?
14:15 - What to look for in a partner if one is planning to start med school in the next few years.
15:59 - Is it lonely? If yes, how do you deal with the loneliness?
18:25 - When are ya'll going to multiply!?

I have a question for you guys: Have you ever felt hesitant to develop a relationship or grow a family because you are pursuing a career in medicine?

Yes, yes, yes. I'm not even in med school, but I'll start applying after I take the MCAT in a few weeks. Im doing an MBA and at the same time I'm finishing some prereqs for med school I didn't do in undergrad. It's hard, because I have so many classes and I had someone tell me: *come back when you're all grown up.* I'm like, I have to write a 40 page paper... for class - this isn't fun. Sorry, I can't spend 6 hours on the couch watching movies with you. Now I'm single and just resigned to be single until I'm further along in the process.

You definitely have a lot on your plate! 😅 I’m sure the timing of a relationship and where you are in the process will align for you when it’s supposed to. But you’ll always be busy lol so don’t feel the need to push off things outside of school that you’re interested in! Good luck on the MCAT and applying! With all of the things you’re doing, I’m sure you’re going to make a great applicant!

Congratulations on the soon to be marriage!!! And I feel you with having tough family decisions like that. One thing that I realized is as time goes on, the right decision for you becomes clearer. A year ago we wouldn’t have thought we’d be growing our family now, but then as seasons changed it became something we felt compelled to do. I have no doubt that you and your significant other will know what’s best for you all when the time comes to make decisions. I just hope Madison and I sharing our story and experience can show that it is possible if it’s something you want to do 😊

As a premed, 32 year-old, married, black man, married to a white woman, I've just noticed how much of an inspiration you are to me, dude. This video gave so much perspective to relationships in Medicine! I’ve been with my high school sweetheart for almost 11 years, going on 2 years married. Our relationship has transitioned over the years due to me choosing a career in medicine. Ya’ll gave some great advice and tips on how to balance a relationship and medical school. I am applying this cycle and we are interested in having a baby fairly soon, but do not know what time would be the best. If you were to able to choose another time in your career to have a baby, would you have? And would it have been earlier or later? And why?

What’s up Keanu! Great question and congrats on you and your significant other’s super strong relationship! I wouldn’t have chosen a different time because what I’ve realized is you’ll always be busy (med school, residency, faculty, etc.). So there’s never a “right” time based on that. To me, it’s more so when you and your partner feel ready and then you learn to make it work regardless of what stage you’re at

I definitely recommend utilizing loans to support your fiancé’s education. We were in a similar boat, but adding stress related to finances will make school (and life) a lot more challenging. Loans at this point is just another resource for you all and if you use them responsibly, they will only be a help.
