What paints are safe for my foam plane?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The most common question I see online relates to what paints to use on a foam RC plane. I have tried a number of different paints on different models over the years and I use my E-Flite P-51 project for an example of what paints I used. The ones listed have been used on multiple different planes with good results.
Products used:
Tamiya masking tape
Yellow Frog masking tape
Tamiya Chrome Silver
Testors Model Master Acrylic
Rust-Oleum 2X spray
Varathane exterior high gloss clear
Other foam safe planes include:
Tamiya AS series spray paints
Testor's Model Master spray paints
Latex house paints
Kilz primer (brush on)
Minwax clear polyurethane

Thanks for the video!! When I was a kid, around 10 years old, I built a Bi-plane out of scrap styrofoam, tooth-picks, etc. I had a lot of time in it. When I went to paint it, I just used spray paint my dad had in the garage. I watched all my hard work shrivel up right before my eyes. That's when I learned to test paints/chemicals before using them! I sure wish they wouldn't put all those decals on from the factory. I just bought a HABU sts, and there are so many decals all over the plane that keep it from looking authentic! I'll be removing them someday if I don't wreck it on my first flight.

Yeah, it is scary and sad to watch paint dissolve your plane! I had a pair of floats that I wanted to seal with clear coat, so I sprayed some on and watched the foam dissolve. Within minutes nothing was left except the plastic parts. Had the same thing happen to my mini-P-51. I weathered it with pastels and wanted to seal it up, misted a little clear on it, and the foam dissolved. I worked quickly to get as much off as I could and saved the plane. I covered over the dissolved areas with clear tape and then painted the tape silver. From a foot away, you can't even see the repairs. Been flying that plane for years like that. The UMX and micro planes use a different kind of foam that dissolves. The larger planes don't seem to have that issue. To remove decals, take an ice cube and rub it all over the decal to freeze the adhesive. Then start pulling the decal up. If you notice it sticking, rub the ice cube on it. Keep doing that until the decal is free. It won't stop the decal from pulling up the base paint, but does keep the decal from pulling apart the foam cells, which will look terrible.

The 2X paint does affect the UMXs'. It also melts the foam hinges that are the norm on the UMX planes. They just need to be primed with the Varithane.

Thanks for the video. Just wondering, when taking off the decals I find that the paint where the decal was is not the texture, colour. What do you do to ensure that the location of where you removed the decal looks the same throughout the wing?

When removing decals from a painted surface, the paint will come off with the decal, leaving a depression in the surface. I fix this a few different ways. The best way and the most time consuming is to use drywall spackling to fill in the area and then sand it smooth. Paint over the area when it is smooth. Next option is to sand the edge of where the paint was removed so that it isn't as sharp and then paint over the bare foam. This works pretty good and is fast. Next up is to just paint over where the decal was pulled from and layer up the paint until the depression looks less noticeable. I have been doing that lately as it is super fast and you can't tell.

Depends on the application. For civilian planes that are kept in excellent condition, I use the highest level of gloss I can find. For natural metal warbirds, I use a semi-gloss since the aluminum dulls pretty quickly when the plane is in service. A restored warbird is glossy, but I make mine as they are in service, so a semi-gloss. For olive drab/gray, Navy tri-color, or modern military, I use the flattest I can find. That is the primary range from high gloss to dead flat. Between those, I use whatever works best for the application. Sometimes a semi-gloss is just enough along with a satin. Also on bare metal warbirds, not everything is glossy. The silver has some shine to it, but the decals, anti-glare panels, and identification paint are satin or dead flat.

Hello Can you please let me know if you used brush 🖌️ with tamiya x11 chrome silver on p51 or used airbrush? Also if mixed any thinner with acrylic paint while brush 🖌️ and also while airbrush

  • @BRGT350

I hand brushed the Tamiya X11 as the areas I needed to cover were small and it was quicker to just brush the areas than use my airbrush. If I do airbrush Tamiya paints, I use their thinner. If I am using a generic acrylic, I use water or a Windex. I don't bother trying to airbrush Model Master acrylics. I have had terrible luck with those. I don't think acrylics for hand brushing. I am working on an A-10 in which I hand brushed a latex base coat and then airbrushed latex over the top to hide the brush strokes and get the diffused overlap between colors. Airbrushing latex is challenging as the paint needs a lot of thinner, but too much and it runs. Getting it right takes more work, but once it is right, it sprays nice.

  • @BRGT350

For decal removal, the best trick I have found so far is to rub an ice cube on the decal to freeze the adhesive. Once that happens, start pulling up the decal while continually rubbing an ice cube on the decal. If you start to pull up any foam, continue with the ice cube to get the adhesive to release. To prep the surface for cleaning, clean it with a mix of diluted isopropyl alcohol and water. Prime with Rustoleum 2X and then add your base color. Clear when done. If you are starting with a plane that is mostly bare white foam, like the Cherokee or EC-1500, the process gets more complex. For those, I use nail polish remover to strip all the factory paint from the foam. I then prep the surface with the mix of alcohol and water before spraying the primer. If you have any dings or voids in the foam, use lightweight spackle to fill them and then sand smooth. Only once have I needed to use the spackle to cover a plane before painting. The most important thing is to take your time and make sure the surfaces are cleaned and prepped before painting. Bare foam planes have a lot of mold release on the surface and all of that needs to be removed before applying paint, clear, or even decals. There are some good pictures in there showing how I painted my Cherokee models flic.kr/s/aHsmfU8XtC

I am not sure of the type of foam used on the FW F-22, but I am sure it is similar to what E-flite and others use. Rustoleum 2X is fine for that type of foam. I am not sure about other types of Rustoleum as they offer a wide range of products. I do know 2X is fine and if you are painting over existing paint, there will be a barrier between the Rustoleum and the foam. You can always add a layer of water based polyurethane (Minwax or Varathane) before painting to get you extra protection.

  • @BRGT350

If there is already factory paint over the foam, I would just paint directly over it. I have moved away from putting down Minwax on the foam and then painting, I just paint over the bare foam or factory paint. I don't use acetone either. I clean the surface with a mix of rubbing alcohol, Dawn dish soap, and water. Probably a mix of 85% water, 15% alcohol, and a few drops of soap in a spray bottle. Just enough to clean the surface. I do more scrubbing if it is bare foam. If it is already painted, just a quick wipe down to clean the surface. I don't try to remove the factory paint. I use it as a base primer.

UMX planes are unique in that the foam used in them can react with certain paints. I would only use brush-on acrylic or airbrush acrylic as long as you are thinning it with water. Latex is safe, but it is very thick and not what you want on an UMX. My suggestion is to look in the art supply area at Walmart or Hobby Lobby. You will find bottles that are about 1.5" diameter by 3-4 inches tall in a wide range of colors. They are cheap as well. Clean the surface first with Windex, let dry, and then apply the paint. Don't use any aerosol paints as the propellant will dissolve the foam. Made that mistake a few times already.

    how bout vinyl wrap

  • @BRGT350

    @BRGT350

    3 жыл бұрын

I wouldn't use it to cover large sections of a plane. Vinyl wrap is much heavier than paint and it would be tough to get it to conform to all of the complex curves. Also near impossible to get the wrap to work with the panel lines and raised details. It would look much more like an old school balsa plane wrapped in film, which has no panel lines or raised details.
