As far as I know the Indonesian government has planned this region as the center of tourism. They has built special economic zone for tourism in Kuta Mandalika (Lombok island) and Labuan Bajo (Flores island, near Komodo national park) to solve tourist overcrowds in Bali. And recently Sumba island is started being popular for some tourists, many hotels and resorts will be built there

I thinks he's more of a 'cut and past,' slap-dash guy than really caring if everything is up to scratch. He usually murders place names. He doesn't know the difference between square kilometers and kilometers squared either.

Thank you for great videos. I think it's easier and sounds better to say "square kilometer" than the other way around.

It's not only better, it's completely different and he ALWAYS gets it wrong. 10km X 10km = 100 square kilometers. 100km squared is 100km X 100km which equals 10000 square kilometers. I've pointed this out to the tinpot professor, to no avail. He also usually murders place names too.

I have always wondered why they are called "The Lesser Sunda Islands" and the old ice age landmass "Sundaland". The Sundanese heartland is now on the western third end of the Java Island, near the Sumatra island, so far away from TLSI. they are not the majority even in Java Island, their language I think is further away from Balinese than Javanese is to Balinese, and is further away from Dayak languages, Malay, and Batak. and yet the entire Landmass is called "Sundaland" Really interested about this

I suspect that's because 'Sunda' are known first by the Europeans compared to other regions in the archipelago, as far back as Ptolemy. Sunda Kingdom was also among the first to have contact with European colonial powers. That's why they just apply the name to a whole bunch of features in the region.

In Timor Leste there is. That is why it is a separate country. The eastern part of Timor was colonised by Portugal and Indonesia by the Dutch.

These groups of islands has a lot of Catholics from what I've heard so this part likely came from the Portuguese.

@@justdont2378 Yes, but Roman Catholicism become a lot stronger under the Indonesians. The Timorese also have animistic beliefs. Before the Indonesian invasion only about 20% of Timorese considered themselves Catholic. When the Indonesians invaded, they required the Timorese to adopt the belief in one God. Instead of adopting Islam there were mass conversions to Roman Catholicism. After the 1999 referendum for independence many Protestants and Muslims left, as they were generally pro Indonesian.

The Geogaphy Bible has an appocriphal biology book... Komodo dragons are far from the closes thing to dinosaurs we have on Earth today. Birds and crocodilians are a lot more closely related to non-avian dinosaurs than any lizzard.

Not all of the western part of the island of Timor belongs to Indonesia. East Timor controls the exclave of Oecusse.

One thing not mentioned is that this region, particularly the island of Arturo, part of Timor Leste, has great diving. Studies have shown that the sea Arturo is the most ecologically diverse on the planet in terms of fish, coral and sea life. Also, after the Vatican City, Timor Leste is the most Catholic country on Earth, it often quoted that 98% of Timorese are Catholic. However, as humans do not want to give up public holidays, as a hangover from the Indonesian occupation the major religious holidays of both Islam and Christianity are public holidays.
