    For my filler books I sometimes look for a “LOT”. I often get a better price when I buy in volume and I even get duplicates and reader copies.

    Very true! I used to get great deals for lots on eBay, but I stay away from lots now just because my runs are so filled up, that the majority of lots would be books I already have, and maybe 2 or 3 that I need.

    Too many people are still of the get rich quick mentality and do not care at all about putting any sort of effort into what they do. In my opinion, either put in the time to get to know your product or put in the time to properly present the items when asked (doing both would be nice). Otherwise, I'll find what I need somewhere else.

    I told my wife and daughter when it's my time to enter those pearly gate...do not take my collection to a comic book store, especially in bulk...do your homework (I won't do it for you, I'm already giving you the collection), check a guide and see what you got, don't sell in bulk, find the easiest way to sell that won't cost you an arm and a leg and don't do a yard sale. either way they will make money since they never put a dime into the collection, but still you wanna get the most out of your product.

    Here's another tip for sellers that ought to be obvious but is worth saying anyway -- examine the comics you're gonna sell and describe/photograph the major defects. About six months ago, I made an eBay purchase for two treasury-size comics I really wanted. The seller included several photos of each and described them as something like "used but in great condition overall." Based on the photos, this seemed to be an accurate description. The Buy It Now price was more than fair, so I ordered 'em. When the comics showed up, one looked the way I expected (VG+, probably), but the other had large spine splits on both ends -- which were not apparent in the photos. Not a huge problem, because I own tons of reader copies and overall the price I paid was tolerable even with the damage. But in the meantime the seller had messaged me to say he has a big collection to sell and if I send him a want list he'll see what he can do, and he'd like to do the transactions off of eBay, to avoid seller fees. My reaction was what you'd expect -- I can't trust this guy, so there's no way I'm doing business with him again. (I kept the comics, didn't reply to the message and left the seller positive feedback with lukewarm comments rather than making a fuss because -- theoretically -- I could have asked questions before making the purchase.)

  • @JernosComicsPopCulture

    @JernosComicsPopCulture

    3 жыл бұрын

    Very good points, Tom. I had a recent transaction that was similar. Multiple pictures, fair price for a book, said it was VF+, and that was it. Send the book, when I pulled it out of the back, it had huge water damage to the back that wasn't very visible in the photos, nor was it stated, and the top staple was completely detached, and there was an added staple to the inside pages of the book. None of these issues were noted. The seller even stated on the listing, "we do NOT over estimate grades, ever." Um, that is a like. That book was no more than a 4.0. He gave me a partial refund and proceeded to assume that "I don't even know and can't confirm if that is even the book I sent you." Wow.. Okay. Seller blocked.

    I think it might be tough to try to treat online sellers you know nothing about as the same as brick and motar stores or big online stores, because like you said your not sure if it was someone selling their pc or someone that never sold books before or if it was someone that just came into the collection or might be someone selling books after their done their 9-5 job so they might not have a lot of extra time, and might just need extra cash. I try to keep it very simple and to the point when buying from people I don’t know. I always send a spread sheet with the books, grades and pricing that I want for each issue, So their will be no confusion. And this way if their pricing and grades are way off they know not to waste their or my time. I go into every transaction with the mind set that they are new to selling because I don’t want to assume that are veteran sellers and waste my time, had a few books arrive at my house in poster tubes. I have been selling for several years on and off at cons and online and saying it might have taken only a hour to pull the books. You would need to really know the size of the collection and if its sorted or how its stored and how many other people were asking for books at the same time. I my self have to keep 15k plus books stored away in the house away from the family so when someone asks for a book I really hope its at the top front of the storage closet. I keep around 90% sorted but if I get a few books of a title I probably wont dig though it to put them away, I only do that once a year. I understand when you say the seller shouldn’t guilt you because they spent time digging for books, but everyone’s time is worth something and they probably got mad because they felt they wasted their time. I always look at things as what’s my time worth if I know I will spend hours and get little back I will usually pass. And having sold for years if someone sent me a screen shot of what they had and said they were looking for not high grade fillers I most likely wouldn’t pay much attention. I would deal with the other people that were more detailed in what they want first. Because not high grade to you might mean something different to someone else. If I had time I would ask for a more detailed list, but I have been selling for a while. I agree with you the seller was not good and sounded like they were new and will most likely learn from this but its also good that you look at what you might have been able to do to make it a much easier transaction as well for future purchases.

  • @JernosComicsPopCulture

    @JernosComicsPopCulture

    3 жыл бұрын

    I ultimately agree with everything you said here, but I also believe that you are being too sensitive to this individual. I did everything I could to make the transaction as easy as possible for him. I gave him details to what I was looking for and I set up my expectations. He's the one offering to sell books, so that is all I can do. I can't hold his hand. As for someone's time being money, I absolutely agree. But who chose to spend an hour looking for books? He did. I told him what I expected, and he made the decision to put that work in, not me. I do not treat online sellers like brick and mortar. I give clear concise details and communication. If me saying I wasn't looking for 9.8s was a turn off to him, then that right there should have made him move one and not "waste" that hour digging for me, then coming back with, "i found a bunch of 9.8s." Again, I agree with your whole approach, but I don't agree with giving this guy any benefit of the doubt. There was nothing more I could have done. The guy was a selfish dick that shouldn't be selling comics. He made that clear when he attacked my mother.

    This sounds like a lot of sellers. Trying to get too much for junk and whining when you ask to many questions. Why do they do this? More often than not they have overpaid on stuff and are trying to maximize their return. It’s sad but true. Agree with 100% of what you say here

    I collect different things and there is usually one person that is trying to unload expensive junk on to new collector or new members in a group or forum. I had a experience like this once where a guy had a post selling thousands of toy soldiers from many types of brands. I was looking for a certain brand. He was like yes, I have hundreds of those. He wanted me to drive a few hours to his house. After a few messages back and forth all he had was cheap junk. Just a waste of time. He was trying to convice me to buy things that I was not interested in.

    Why waste your time. 2 attempts and I’m gone. This is how transactions will be.

    I didn’t have an issue with your first red flag, miscommunication happens all the time. But the guilt tripping and name calling was totally out of line. If you’re bitching about spending an hour organizing your comics, then you’re in the wrong business. Think about all the times you went to a car dealership and spent all that time with the salesman, to not end up buying a car from them. You’re not obligated to make that purchase so there’s no reason for the salesman to get all butthurt.

    The seller is a terrible salesman, horrible. That person is a clown who probably couldn't press a shirt.

    i mean respectfully it was kinda a broad spectrum u gave him . id be kinda lost too if you didnt give specific issues u were looking for. most buyers u should already know are horrible listeners especially if its not that formal.
