Jerno is straight forward... no bullsh*t like some of these other comic shows. He is dead on, if you are trying to unload a collection, you have to have value there to demand a certain price. Nobody wants to spend $500 of a 1000 dollar bin comics! My man gets hyper some, but it's his passion... and frankly if you don't show passion, then maybe you're on a lower level. Keep up the great content... don't let any "haters" cast a shadow on what you are doing. What ever your goal is...comic book shop or whatever, I hope you achieve them.

Love the passion. Selling is hard as all hell. Hours upon hours put in on the sales. Packaging (especially if done by yourself) so daunting. Integrity must be maintained on many fronts as a seller, up to and including knowledge of your product. Don’t get an aneurism telling the trolls what’s what though. We need education, but the trolls are going to troll no matter what. Keep doing your thing!

I am sorry that you felt "yelled at." This was not my intention. It is more about passion than it is anger. BUT, I will say that there was a bit of harsh, straight to the point energy for individuals who refuse to acknowledge the facts addressed in this video. Do you ever watch Stephen A. Smith on ESPN talk about sports? He's very animated, passionate, and often gets loud and stern. But he's not yelling "at you," but at naysayers, so to say. Unless you feel like crapping on people who buy comics in bulk and sell comics as a business, you shouldn't feel yelled at whatsoever.

Most people have no clue how businesses work. Also, a lot of comic book owners especially those that have held on to their childhood comics for decades think these are going to be very valuable. Then they go online and find some values for the same (often graded) books, and they think this is the price they should be able to sell for. Or they go into a comic book store and see the boxes full of $3 books and think that their 200 books must therefor be worth $600. They will get upset if you offer them a fraction of that number, but they also dont want to spend the time selling their books individually. If they did, they would quickly find out that a lot of them... especially the mass-produced 90's trash is mostly worthless.

A big time cost that I think many people do not factor into the total labor cost is the time it takes to even find the collections and on the collections that you end up passing on. I spend hours looking for and negotiating on collections that I do not buy (because the price they end up asking for doesn't make sense once I see what is actually in the collection). I never make a dime on these collections, but I *have* to factor the time on trying to obtain them into my total labor costs. Great video and fantastic points!

In my experience, most large collection I pick up have already been picked over before I get to them. Due to this, I try to stay under 20 cents a book when I am buying a collections. Also, in my experience, most people do not bag or board their comics which cost actually more than most books are worth. To put things into perspective.. the LCS down the street from me pays 10 cents a book when he buys a collection and he is always buying collections. Face it.. very few people make money off comics books.

Part of the reason this hobby is so amazing to me is that we each have different interests, and each of our interests can be met. The 90s and modern titles that are the subject matter of this video can still be fun and engaging reads and/or art for some readers. But those books are basically worthless. If nobody is willing to pick them up at pennies on the dollar and flip them, they'd basically disappear. Thanks for the breakdown on numbers.

You made me think of Chuck(owner of Mile High) on why he prices the way he does. People give him sooo much grief. However, he is in a spot where many of us resellers would love to be. He most likely owns every 9.8 of that book he is charging a premium for. Plus those premiums help offset the deals he gives on other books. Keep up the great work!! Once I'm buying again I'll be seeing your stuff on Whatnot

  • @JernosComicsPopCulture

    @JernosComicsPopCulture

    2 жыл бұрын

Honestly, I think what Chuck does is a completely different conversation. I mean let's be honest... he's literally price GOUGING. His prices don't even make sense. Like if a high grade New Mutants 87 is selling at around $150, he'll have his priced at $800. So I can't sit here in good faith and say he's charging a "premium." The reality of his prices as well? His books don't sell. When was the last time you heard of someone saying that they bought a big book from Mile High? Chuck even admitted it in a recent interview right before COVID that he doesn't care if his books sell or not. I can't tell you why he does what he does. And yes, many of us would envy his position and what he built. It's pretty amazing. But there is no logical excuse or explanation for most of the prices that he charges.

the only comment i have for this whole issue would be: the seller didnt need to sell at all if he didnt like the price you gave him. Also, as you probably know, when you start a business, you're going to take hits on profits early on. This is not a great economic time for this industry either, as you well know. If you think your profit was minute, think of the loss the OG seller took (in theory) by selling for the price you bought the collection at. I get it, man, but at least you made something. And its a step to build your brand. One last thing, if you dont mind......bro, the passion you show is impressive, but you aint gotta yell. Kids are trying to sleep, lol. jokes. Best of luck, dont let haters bother you.

  • @JernosComicsPopCulture

Absolutely not true. Any business documents utilities and gas for their business, and submit it with their taxes every year as an expense. Every time I travel to pick up a collection, I calculate and document my mileage. If someone owns a business, their electricity bill is a huge fixed cost that goes into the P & L (Profit/Loss) statement in their accounting department. If you work from home, utilities like electric, internet, phone, etc., are still counted as business expenses, but it's usually anywhere from a 15 - 25% of it only. If I use 25% of the square footage in my house to do business in, then 25% of my rent is considered a business expense as well when filing taxes.

That's a really important point, actually. 100% true. Most people don't know how much work is involved. It's a pain in the ass. When someone sells their comic book collection they think every book is nmint/mint and most are in fine/vfine if that. Majority of the books are commons that you can fine in dollar bins. Sometimes you fine comics that you never heard of and have to ask yourself "Who buys this junk" Those comics no one will buy even for 25/50 cents each. I give them away to kids where I live. You can deduct cost of materials, gas to post office/comic book shows/ to your LCS and when you travel to buy a collection , dedicated office space, internet, ect. Still most of the time it's a wash. Thanks.

It makes even those junk books cost about $6 to give away. The only real way to get that down is second class mail no tracking and no card to decrease the weight. There is a total of 10.9% in percentage fees. One is 9% and the other is 1.9%. Then on top of that, yes, a .30 cent listing fee. But if you sell a comic for $10, it's a much smaller percent than if you sell a book for $2. That's why I have been bundling more of my cheaper books. So if I list a lot of 3 Marvel books, I'm still only hit with one .30 cent fee for that listing.

I have to disagree. What I took away from this episode is that resellers must take a clear-eyed view of a comic collection that's up for sale, and make an offer that will enable the reseller to turn a decent profit when all's said and done. Part of the process is having a good understanding of all the costs associated with the purchase and resale of the collection (time expenditure, fresh bags and boards, eBay fees, etc.), another big part of the process is having a good understanding of the salability of the comics in the collection. When you try to earn a living from reselling collectables, you're inevitably going to meet some would-be sellers who would very much like to get an unrealistically large amount of money from comics that have little or no resale potential. This was the motivation for Chris' video, and he did express some exasperation. I don't blame him. If the person trying to sell me a comic collection was pretty much arguing "I say you can make a lot more money from these comics than you're estimating, and my assurance should trump any silly bean-counting calculations you've made, Mr. Mathematics Guy." That'd annoy me, too. The argument boils down to, "disregard your own critical thinking skills, do as I command." I don't like that approach.

Bullies (or in this case unfair criticizers) get their power (and control) based on how the other person reacts or responds to their bullying or criticism. You just did what they wanted - to overreact to a situation that they intentionally initiated. I don’t see any reason why you even had to respond by making this video. Those who know you and the comic book collecting market get what you did. People and businesses take advantage of the information gap that exists between sellers and buyers all the time to make money (e.g. think auto dealers before the internet). That has changed quite a bit with the transparency of markets and prices that are now on the internet. A seller who does not know the true real value of a collection before they sell it should not blame the buyer for a price that they feel isn’t fair. I understand your frustration (and anger), but the tone of this video was a bit too defensive (when it didn’t need to be). You are defending yourself when it really wasn’t necessary. You did nothing wrong.

I appreciate you sharing your honest thoughts, Tim. Quite honestly, when I looked back on this, I didn't realize in the moment that I was so... "animated," so to say. But quite honestly? That's just sometimes my passion. I disagree with you about why I needed to make this video. This video wasn't a video for "bullies," but merely a video to educate people. If you read through the comments, you will see how this information delivered in the video really helped many people who watched it. My intent with all my videos is to educate. But I do understand when you speak of my delivery. I definitely think I could have been less animated when discussing it, and maybe that energy was a product of those who "run their mouths." I think it was partially that, mixed with the fact that sometimes, I allow my passion to be on full display.

Funny. I see you in the comments on like all of Jerno's videos always crying for attention. You probably have pictures of Jerno's on your wall and secretly wish you could be him.
