I'm Back!! Sorry it took so long to reply back! I graduated AIT! Qualified 68W! Basic was... well basic lol and it was more relaxed in AIT. You still have to study a lot! They cram 6 months worth of EMT material in 4 weeks! Do not let the calmness get to you. Study as much as you can on your off time or you WILL fail National Registry exams (unless you have medical experience already then you should fine). Oh and BTW, there are Drill Sargents in AIT as well, not instructors. Good Luck future soldiers and future 68W's!!!

dont pack anything for basic. pack for ait. when your 10 weeks is up and you realize youre not going home and you get to ait youre gonna wish you brought stuff

Have fun, I was there in 1995 Delta 2/39 "war dogs". I'm sure it's changed a lot, but the Army is the Army. Have some fun. It sucks, but it's a good kind of suck.

All I had were the clothes on my back and a small jansport bag I remember when we shipped to basic one of the drills kicked my bag to the next set of barracks in one kick lol

I like these videos, I'm an Aussi and it is very special to see how our Alie selects and trains their fine personel. I notice that you will need a larger place for company patches. I live north queensland Rockhampton, where we have a large training area shoalhaven, I have met some fine USA troops on visit here for games. you guys love our strong beer.

I just had my NG backpack with a change of undergarments, my phone charger, and letter stationary (I didn't know you could buy stamps at the tropp store yet). Don't take a bunch of stuff, how small it is doesn't matter because ounces make pounds

Dude I’m telling you sneak your phone in just keep it in your higiene bag!!!!! I went to ft Leonard Wood from May to September and they never check that!!!! Buy a cheap iPod or small phone today or tomorrow at the airport for your own good and you can have your phone the whole time just don’t tell anyone they will snitch you out!!!!

Leaving tomorrow morning for Ft Leonard Wood, MO.

I went to basic training almost a year ago to this date... The only thing to bring is the clothes on your back and your cell phone(which will be picked up)! That's what I brought, and made "Shark attack" wayyy better since I had less weight in my bags... Yes buy a black watch to wear it will help with getting up 5-10 mins early! This will mentally prepare yourself for the day, and get ahead of everyone else that's going to shave before PT. DONT BUY THE PX "ARMY" watch...

I went to basic in 1982. Yes alot has changed in the Army in that time BUT the first week from what i seen on utube is basically the same. To my knowledge i didn't bring much just a gym bag with change of clothes and tooth brush and paste and shaving gear. that's it. When you get there they lock up all your civilian stuff until you finish basic. They will give you a cash advance and take you to the PX and tell you what you need to buy like personal hygiene stuff maybe some writing paper to send letters home. Maybe the Army has a lot of freetime in basic but we never had. For example when we were released to the barracks we showered and had mail call. Shined our boots and got our uniforms and wall locker squared away for the next morning. maybe wrote letters that's it. For reading material we were given a handbook called the (Smartbook) which contained all tasks we needed to pass to graduate basic. So every chance we got we studied this and were always singled out once in a while and asked questions about the book and if we didn't know the answer we did pushups or last to eat in the chow line. I'm sure it's similar in many ways today. There is an old saying if the Army wants you to have something they will issue it to you.

Amen! I went to Basic in June 1983 and our civilian bags were stowed in a side room off of the DIs offices. We had no access to them until we were ready to out-process at the end of Basic. We kept the hygiene basics, and anything else we needed during basic was picked up at the PX at Main Post. That was a supervised shopping trip with the DIs checking our purchases. The one time we were allowed to go to a club was during Independence Day holiday. Even then, we had to wear BDUs since our civilian gear was locked up. We carried our Smartbooks everywhere, since it fit right into our BDU pocket, and studied it during downtime. If we were not actually engaged in a task, or not using the book as a reference in class, we had it out.

I would add do not bring military (especially from high speed units) tattoos.....unless they are from prior service and relevant to that prior branch of service

When I went I packed only my personal hygiene, one set of spare clothes and important paperwork, that's it, in a backpack. Don't be that guy with a travel case because you will regret bringing that on day zero.

When I went through basic at Benning, we weren't even allowed to have watches until blue phase.

As of Jan2020 best list I have from a 1SG is "white socks 4, tighty-whiteys 4, phone, charger+cord, backupcharger+cord, SEALED Mitchum unscent roll deodorant, SEALED small pack of disposable razors, tiny hardback notebook 3"x5" or less, watch, backup watch. Notebook, chargers, backup watch will go in bag with phone, local 1SG said a small protective purse/pouch is ok for phone and acc. Deodorant, socks, razors, undies will save you time and a PX trip (and a little money; px isn't walmart cheap but isn't bad) The TSA may take your razors away... they're supposed to be allowed but those guys couldn't get into boot. Sealed bodywash/shampoo 3oz travel size TSA approved OK. Again, saves time/trip. Gum for the trip OK, *surrender it at the yellow line*. Some of you will be flying. If you have the snots bring tissue/papertowel to *surrender at the yellow line*. AND YOUR ISSUED BACKPACK, FOLDER, PAPERWORK, ID, SS CARD. Don't be prissy, you show up with Louis Vuitton and you will never ever hear the end of it.

Crazy that they allowed smoking and even put packs in MREs before and now forbidden

When I joined the Army they gave you a list. It was easy. If it was on the list, you better have it, or you would have to buy it. If it was not on the list, you had better not bring it, because you would have to throw it away. I think I remember them locking your civilian bag and the clothes you wore there up until you graduated, but it’s been a long time. The point is, they issue you everything you need that isn’t on the list, it isn’t summer camp.

Also, you can have birth control ladies if any of you need to know.

What about bringing insect repellent, extra toothbrush to clean your weapon, Rite in the Rain notebook & pen, KT tape for blisters, and red light headlamp (also considering that the Shark Attacks are gone)?

I know you can’t bring medicine but do you think they’ll let me keep dramamine? Its for motion sickness that I get on planes. It’s not prescription or anything. I don’t want to throw it away and I know they have bracelets for that but I’ll be coming home for christmas so I rather have it because it works faster and I’ve never tried the bracelets before.

In 2002 they gave me a packing list. When I got to reception they made me buy every single thing on that packing list. When we left reception they forced us to take Louis Lamore books. When we got to basic later that day they confiscated all those books. That might have been my first experience of true army inefficiency. The only thing I recommended is keeping about twice as much underwear as required. And you should bring a G Shock watch to basic. I destroyed a Timex.

Can you bring (and are allowed to keep) moleskin and an anti chafing gel stick?

Its been a long journey :( I was supposed to go to Meps tomorrow but now apparently my recruiter got a letter where they are asking me now for blood work so I’m getting anxiety cause it’s been getting longer and want to be an MP so I’m hoping I’ll be able to choose mp hopefully next week

Don’t bring a watch, never got to wear mine. The drill sergeants just wanted to mess with us. If you are allowed to wear one just buy one when you go to the mini px

Actually after basic training u go straight to AIT, I recommend u guys to take some stuffs with u, as headphones, books if u like to read, and other things, so then u don’t need to somebody send to u and save some money!

I leave next Tuesday for benning!

The only jewelry you're allowed to take the basic as a wedding ring and that you should be careful with cuz like you said there's some people at Basics that would take it but that's the only thing

I wouldn't have thought to bring a watch. I would have thought they would issue you one of those all black, compass 24 hr digital watches

Absolutely not, the only time you can use your phone is when you phase up and they give you a 2 minute phone call. Then it’s put away again. Atleast that was my experience

@Matt Ward What’s up Matt, first off we appreciate the informational videos man. But my question is how would you go about (Let’s say hypothetically you wanted to) signing up for the Army with 2 MOS’? I want to go infantry, but when I get out I’d like to have a skill set that’s valuable in the job market, so I’d like to work as an interior electrician in the Army as well; preferably I’d like to do infantry first during the first half of my active duty contract and work as an electrician for the 2nd half of my active duty contract. From what I read, to do this, I’d have to extend my active duty contract and get that 2nd MOS included in there. But they were saying that the Army would actually have to have a demand for that MOS and get lucky basically. Thank you in advance for replying if you even see this lol

tonydelpilar it’s called a reclassification and it’s extremely unlikely you could however reup into a different job when your contract is up. if you wanted to reclassify your unit would have to pay for you to do it therefore as aforementioned it won’t likely happen

Best thing is just bring extra civilian clothes just in case , stamps , envelopes , writing material to write letters, casio G shock watch mudd resistance and water resistance with alrm and night light in them ,wallet ID and 50$ cash in singles , and your paperwork social , birth cirt of kids if you have any , marriage cirt if married etc.. good luck At BCT .

Just relax, millions of people have done what you are about to do. I was there in 1995, Delta 2/39. It's miserable at times, but you will forever be proud of yourself. My advice is to take everything you do very seriously and in doing that you will present yourself well and your time will be so much better. Attitude is everything.

Good luck, you will be totally fine trust me. Remember, tough times never last, tough people do. I'm a 42 year old father, my daughter is probably only a few years younger than you, so believe me you will be fine. It's not that hard, one foot in front of the other.

Besides getting paid on the 1st and 15th.. do military personnel also get paid on the 30th??????

It's not in my opinion because you cant make/receive calls or record or send/receive texts. But, being that it is a high tech, outdoor, expensive, survival watch, I would highly suggest you ask your recruiter about taking that. They might confiscate it at BT because it has GPS tracking and smartphone linking.
