What Nobody Says About Domantas Sabonis

Спорт

Domantas Sabonis dominates the box score, yet perception doesn't match that production, showing how misunderstood his game can be.

It's like the Kings combined the Nuggets, running offence through the passing big, and the Warriors, beautiful movement shooting and cutting, and made one of the most unique playstyles of any team I can remember. Love watching them.

They are literally copying the Nuggets playstyle, while Sabonis does his best Jokic impersonation. OKC and Houston are doing the same. Jokic flipped the league on its head.

Your describing the 2002 kings lol. Watch the old tape, Webber and Divac could both control the pace and had better post moves than Sabonis. Peja, Bibby, and Bobby Jackson we great shooters and cutters! The 2002 kings were ahead of their time. They truly started this style of play in the nba, not the nuggets or warriors, so technically the Kings own it. Webber originally didn’t want to play the Princeton offense but coach Pete Carril convinced him that his skills would benefit the team more controlling the game or in the high post, than in the low post playing big.

Thanks for the video, really thoughtful analysis. I also think Sabonis is misunderstood on defense - he's not Anthony Davis, he's not Jaren Jackson Jr., but the advanced metrics and eye test both tell me he's middle of the pack, largely holds his own, and does a perfectly competent job in man-to-man post defense. He's more than held his own in key match-ups with Jokic and AD. He's not going to clean up the rest of his team's messes, but he's also not leaving messes for his teammates to clean up.

I think people underestimate Sabonis because he doesn't dominate a game on his own. He needs a good team and good shooters around him and isn't going to dominate the ball at the end of the game, always take the last shot, or beat his man off the dribble, or dominate in the post. Too many people are hung up on the hero ball of the 80's, 90's, and 00's and think of players who _don't_ play hero ball as mere complementary pieces for the "real" stars. They think of Fox and Monk as the "real" players on the Kings who make everything work, and in a sense, that's correct - Fox would get his numbers even without Sabonis. Sure the team will lose all the time and miss the playoffs _(just like they did before the Halliburton for Sabonis trade),_ but Fox can still score 25 any time he wants so he's the "real" star _(this is not shade at Fox, he's legitimately fantastic, but he didn't win much before Sabonis got there)._ It's the difference between looking at one play or one highlight and watching the whole game or understanding the Kings' system. Sabonis doesn't get a ton of highlights, but he sure piles up defensive rebounds, screen assists, kickout assists, and makes the whole offense run smoothly. He's not usually the one who hits the jumper that puts the Kings ahead with seconds to go; instead he's the one who grabbed all those boards and pushed the pace so the game didn't come down to a single jumper and the Kings won by 8 instead of 2. The box score says he's a superstar and if you watch the games it's clear that he's a critical piece of the Kings offense and defense, but he isn't usually lauded as the hero. He's sort of the ultimate role player, but his role is to do everything except hit the big shot.

But in fact yes, Sabonis isn’t able to regularly beat Green down the court as he does most bigs, Green is an all time great defender that’s stops Sabonis from getting the post position and cutting off driving lanes, he’s also got the benefit of the whistle due to him being an all time great. GSW also have a switch heavy defence that reduces the impact of off ball movement and there for Sabonis’ passing lanes. All that lead to the game simply becoming a track meet and off ball movement competition in which is exactly how the GSW want to play as they are the best in history it.

To be honest, it feels weird to see Sacramento competing at a high cliff after all those dismal years of struggle. I can only imagine how much more dominant Boogie Cousins could have been if he played for them in this era. Well, anyway, I am happy for the Kings.

You forgot to mention one very important fact about the playoffs. Sabonis was beaten as fuck, he needed a thumb operation and time to recover from all his other traumas (also multiple beatings in the series from mentally ill green). It's 'mandatory' for a Lithuanian to play in your national team. Sabonis skipped last years world games, that's how bad it was.

Definitely a lot of similarities, I'd say a key difference is that Sabonis has another level of size and interior scoring ability that helps him apply a lot more pressure.

The answer is: because of Jokic. They are very similar type of players but Jokic was first, is more famous and it was already difficult for NBA to swallow Jokic greatness so Sabonis is hidden in his shadow. At least for now.

domantas obviously learned a lot from his dad. their genes are phenomenal if you listen to shaq talk his dad had the potential to be the 90s version of jokic just had too many injuries. if domantas had a bit more long range shooting touch and a bit more height he'd be a nightmare to deal with compared with what he already is. crazy that he's leading the league in rebounding despite being an undersized 5 but if you listen to gilbert arenas talk euros are soft lol.

Finally professional review and not wawe of hate full of decrations Porzingis is better, Adebayo is better, or Sengun is better. They aren't. And then goes parroting poor defender, stop it, his teammates constanly makes mistakes he runs for a help, than his direct opponent gets a pass. Firstly Kings little men should show a better deffence. Also Fox sometimes shoots 33% FG and all team 3pt. shoots is 20%. So poor offense. Also Kings need a strong 4 number, not to leave Sab to fight with couple bigs with such a teams as Pelicans. Mr. Westbrook was was a star because of triple doubles and Sabonis is just a good player, some haters even state he is a 7th center; creating screens for them is nothing, excellent Fg% is nothing. Thank you.
