What nearly dying taught me about life and unicorns | Katerina Vrana | TEDxThessaloniki

Stand-up comedian Katerina Vrana tells the story of the health challenges she faced in 2017 while on tour in Malaysia, always delivered in her own, unique sense of humor. It's powerful to watch her sense of comedy, through which she is sending the audience into multiple rounds of laughter.
Music by audionautix.com
Katerina Vrana performs stand up comedy in both Greek and English all over the world.
She has been making audiences laugh through sold-out shows in Athens and London as well as at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. CNN has included her in its list of “Female Comedians you must see”. In December 2016 she came third in Laugh Factory’s international competition “Funniest Person in the World”. In April 2017, while on tour in Malaysia, she fell seriously ill and nearly died. For the past year and a half, she’s been concentrating on her rehabilitation as she's still facing problems with her movement, eyesight, and speech.
Lately, Katerina focuses on her new show "Staying Alive: I nearly died you know" which premiered in Athens in February 2019. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I almost drowned to death once. It was shocking to me how I suddenly accepted my fate and said to myself. "Oh, well. This is it." Then all of a sudden, a friend of mine helped me. After that, I realized I wasn't ready to die yet. I almost wasted my life. That experience changed how I see life entirely.

I swear to God, this is EXACTLY what happened to me when I was 12 years old in a pool. At some point I just gave up and thought "This is it. It's ok. It's time", I closed my eyes, knowing my fate… until a friend dived in and saved me. It never came to me that others might have experienced the acceptance of death at this last fraction of a moment when you are indeed about to die.

Summary: She basically said that people shouldn’t feel sorry for her and should not fell just sorry for people with special needs. They should be proud for what they have accomplished. Also she said in her own funny way that the love of her fans helped her a lot. And also how different is the Greek approach towards people with special needs. The psychological approach is very different and superficial. This is what she meant.

I remember watching her 2013 TED Talk 5 years ago whilst in college, trying to find a funny material about stereotypes and her sense of humour blew me away. One of my favourite TED Talks ever. This is powerful, really show that anything can happen in life, but you are not what happened to you. It is our own choice to choose who we are despite what happens to us. Keep sharing and inspiring Vrana, we love you !

She basically talks about how the majority of greeks lack of knowledge when it comes to ill or disabled people. Then she says that everyone should talk abou their problems, otherwise fear will be heavier as the time passes (Idk the right expression) and that we should learn to face our problems as they are (idk if i miss sth)

@@pissysweetsmak She says that in Greece we tend to feel sorry for people with disabilities or psychological issues and pity them but that's not what they need. They simply need understanding.
