on the flipside, books are nothing but fuel for a fire and a fire hazard if you need to escape your home for some reason. ditto for cleaning up a flood or just cleaning in general. when you have less stuff, you have to clean less stuff. that gives you more free time to spend doing what you love which ironically could be reading those books haha. but you can go digital on an iphone or android and not even need a kindle.

if they have value in your life then keep them! it's not about depriving yourself of things that you love instead it is being mindful and aware of what you chose to purchase and bring into your life. Ofc having a kindle or online books may be less clutter and more sustainable but personally I love how books feel and look

Stuff and clutter stresses me out. The less things in my house, with minimal visual stimulation, the more relaxed I feel. Varietygirl1 People think decluttering means like getting rid of dresser or something. No literally little stuff that sit around anyway or clothes that never get worn in rotation. They get analyzed, I debate it’s value after 3 weeks and I declutter. Little phone charger cords, phone charger outlets, books ive read through, or thinking you have to keep the coupon paper with the code written on it when you literally just have to take a picture of it and recycle the paper.

JAN KHALABI Who said I’m replacing things. Even if I am, it’s with things I use daily and find value in. It’s not a puzzle you can play with over and over again (also...board games? Ugh throw it out lol no seriously see if you even remember how to play it after you blow the dust off of it) you simply declutter. Even seeing that. Your brain feels like it’s shredding a file of overloaded responsibility to something that has zero value. Here’s a soothing practice to get started. Clean out your wallet/pocketbook. Remove the extra limbs we call “trinkets” from your car keys. Just your hand being able to grasp something that’s been the same for so long and is now different. It just feels good inside. Without sounding too floaty and cliche. It’s just fact.

"If you don't create your own definition of success, someone else will do it for you." Honestly, I love this. Only recently I started asking what do I want, and that quote puts my feelings into words. I will definitely show this one to people asking about minimalism.

Had you heard about low time preference and law of marginal utility? They seem like describe the concept of minimalism with accuracy, but 250 years ago. Austrian economists were talking about that repetitively all the time, especially how capitalism, in its natural form, is about savings and intentional decision making, not consumerism, after all capitalism is about capital accumulation, not capital spending.

Minimalism has been something I practiced unintentionally for a while. It wasn’t until I watched your documentary on Netflix that I realized I was borderline minimalist. Since then I dove head first into the ideology and taken a minimalist approach to my life. I have been documenting my journey since October on KZread and have been blessed to be able to help other people along the way as I grow as a minimalist. To me minimalism is in the eye of the beholder much like beauty.

And then she explained in which aspects she wouldn't be a minimalist, because she had too many of some objects. I've been trying to declutter for years now and I've made progress, but it definitely is a skill you need to master. Even then, things I love like my art supplies and school books I still keep, because it wouldn't bring me joy to have just one brush or read only from my laptop (also i have a million scarves).

I am so glad I found your channel because it really made me reflect on my own values and my purpose of life.Due to my life circumstances it has been very hard for me to separate the difference between looking at my job passionately and seeing it in a materialistic way.I am a preschool teacher in California and teacher's here are so underpaid that it is so hard to keep food on the table and a roof under your head when you have bills and credit cards to pay that it almost feels like you are sinking and sinking rather then improving. For me it contradicts with the idea about finding a job that I am passionate about because the job that I do find passion in is preschool teaching but unfortunately is not making me feel like I can have a stable lifestyle due to how underpaid teachers really are.I am afraid to look at my job in a materialistic way but that's how far this has come.I shouldn't have to worry about how much I should be making every paycheck but rather enjoying my job fully because it is my passion.I have even thought going back to school and getting a Master's Degree but then the question of picking a program that I love or that would make me enough money to live off of. Maybe this all does have to do with every person's mentality and perspective but I came in hope that Minimalism could support a simpler and much more rather radical viewpoint to life and how I can learn through improvement.

I loved this video. As a former American maximalist who moved to Europe and enjoyed traveling in Asia, the benefits of keeping only those things which one is passionate about is truly important in finding a sense of joy in life. Prioritizing. I am by no means a real minimalist, but it did feel good donating a Mercedes SL to a nonprofit organization before moving to Europe and giving 46 boxes of used books to local churches and booksellers so that others could enjoy them. I took a sofa that I designed and made, a grand piano which was the first big purchase I made after college and all of my classical printed music with me in a shipping container. Your life in a box. But Europeans live in a much smaller footprint and having less things somehow allowed me to see everything that was extraneous in my life. I hope you inspire more people as you did me when I watched your video.

I told him afterwards, he was very disappointed with himself. We started to sort out his clothes, sold some and then donated most. Now he has 15 shirts and is very happy with it. He gets to wear all of them in 2 weeks (just in time for laundry) and we have so much closet space! IT is the way to go

If you are young, and can take on a minimalist mentality now, it's a far better way than learning it later in life. You can surround yourself with a FEW good quality items, which won't be a burden to carry. You will have TIME to enjoy life and less work to do, by rejecting a consumerist lifestyle. And look at the tools you have; phones which hold complete music/ book/ file collections in the palm of your hand!

I've spent 20 years collecting stuff that I will never need. Now I'm in an ongoing process of minimalism. I'm only keeping my books and some tech (since they're I hobby a spend a lot of time on and get a lot of fulfillment from), for the rest, I've been gradually repurposing, donating, giving away or just throwing out. It feels inexplicably good to do. I found that it helps me personally to just take some pictures of an item before I give/throw it away. Makes it easier for me to part with. My house looks cleaner, is easier to clean and I feel happier and more confident. It may sound stupid that I take the pictures, but it has helped me immensely.

I started my minimalist journey around 10 years ago with a basic video from a guy in the UK. He just said go through every drawer , cupboard in your house and get rid of all of the things you don’t need. Then I found Far beyond the stars. He was out before Joshua Becker. Both of them were a great help back then. Everyone said I was crazy and would never stick to it but I have. I love it. I’m not an extreme minimalist. I don’t live out of a backpack. But I only have what I want and need. My house is very organised and easy. My son is a hoarder lol but he has his own journey ahead of him. I chose it for myself and keep his things down to as little as is comfortable for him. He’s 12. But I have to say he likes things to be tidy and organised at the least. It’s so worth doing. I’ve helped a few of my friends too and they’ve enjoyed a huge benefit. Even though they still have what I’d call an average amount of things. It’s a never ending satisfying journey. It has saved me a fortune and saved me a lot of time. Just do one thing each day and never stop. 😊

Most recently the book which has had the greatest influence on me is "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" by Marie Kondo. This book not only got me off my duff to get rid of tons of stuff that was just in the way, it also rekindled my interest in journal keeping. As a result I've discarded thousands of real and virtual items and found that clutter isn't so much the unnecessary stuff lying on my floor, as it is the unnecessary stuff in my mind. After reading this book not only did I get a clean and organized closet, I found the Bullet Journal, started traveling on a regular basis, and started looking at minimalism. That has brought me here. And for that I'm deeply grateful.

I'm pretty sure I'm a minimalist. I've always been pretty poor but, still, I'm pretty sure I could have more stuff than now If I wasn't actively only keeping stuff I really like. I realized that I am, just like my boyfriend, a minimalist when we talked about the size of our future flat. I said 40m² are enough. And he was worried we wouldn't have enough space. Then I told him that all his stuff besides his video game collection fits into one shelf, one desk and one tiny shelf. A minimalist like him will never have trouble with too much stuff.

This was an epic video Matt.. I just watched your documentary on Netflix and will be giving a persuasive speech on minimalism in my public speaking class. Thank you so much for the videos you make and for inspiring me to start including aspects of minimalism in my everyday life.
