What Makes This Race Car Faster
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
How do you build a race car that goes fast? Faster than anyone else? I hung out with the fastest team at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to find out.
Full on-board video of Shute's winning run: • Pikes Peak 2021 Fastes...
Helmet cam: • Robin Shute | Full Run...
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a special breed of racing where the clever privateers and the big dollar factory teams race against each other, and the mountain, to 14,115 feet. I joined the winning team so that I could learn all their secrets of speed, and then share them with you.

I had a prof that always talked about The Perfect Racecar. The Perfect Racecar is the one that completes the race then immediately disintegrates. Anything more durable than that was overbuilt and too heavy.
Best coverage I've ever seen of the event. Thanks for making this.

Hey Matt, I don't know if you realise how engaging, informing and entertaining your videos are - you should. The quality of every component, the commentary and pacing are absolutely spot on. I wish you the prosperity of being taken up by corporate money for a high flying show, but I hope you stay with the format we know and love here. This stuff is beyond legendary. and some of the best material on the subject of automotive engineering anywhere. Thanks for your efforts.

+1 for that. I managed to get my hands on a VHS tape years ago about Britten's design/building/racing at Daytona. The fact that he brazed a crack in the cylinder wall the night before the race, and the only reason the bike lost was due to a Ducati regulator was amazing. Him jumping up and down like a kid at Christmas seeing the bike run so well is still one of the most poignant, beautiful things I've seen. Absolute legend, absolute genius. I didn't even know the man personally, and still felt the loss of his passing.
That coverage was fantastic. Really excited to see the race next year.

Holy crap, I didn't even realize it was that long, had to double check! Best use of 26 minutes today. :)
Thank you, as always, for a delightful video. A) Wow, Shute is SMOOTH. B) Yes, racing are hard. I think most new racers underestimate the effort it takes just to arrive at the track, on time, with functional equipment... doubly so if you're not a trustafarian. For example, I roadraced motorcycles for 6 years. The first race of my second season, I left my helmet at home. C) I crewed for a sidecar team in 2011 (the last year of dirt sections, the year Monster Tajima broke 10 minutes.) It was one of the best experiences of my life. Everything about it just seems designed to amp up your emotions. The epic skill & bravery of the racers, the loyalty and grit in the face of adversity of the crews, the mind-boggling danger, the crazy hours, the bizarre sleeping arrangements, the basic difficulties of managing 10k people on a 2 lane road... I need to go again, and I'd love to support a team again. All hail the algorithm.
Take that plaid powertrain, stick it in a lightweight aero racer, and you have next year's winner. Blasting a big four-door luxury sedan into the top 10 is stunning.
Your videos are a beautiful mix of well-presented, high-grade info and brilliant low-key humor. Thanks for another excellent video Matt.

I doubt Pikes Peak will ever be in a Gran Turismo game again unfortunately - the studio isn't hungry anymore, they just do the bare minimum and don't have enough competition...

The idea of a French woman driving a German car to victory at Pikes Peak didn’t sit well with some. Bobby Unser was reputedly quite vocal about his loss, to which Mouton is said to have replied: “If you have the balls you can try to race me back down as well.” www.messynessychic.com/2018/01/23/she-raced-the-boys-and-took-their-trophies/

Great video, concise and knowledgeable presentation. The flyover of the mountain is great. Good to hear the road at the top is due to be rebuilt.
I was at Devil's Playground when Sebastien Loeb went by in the Peugot. His run was fantastic, and it started snowing 20 minutes later. The weather is as much a competitor as the mountain, never mind the other drivers.
