What Makes Slovenian One Of The Most Difficult Languages To Learn | Slovene 101

So another Slovene 101 video in which I talk about the things that may be complicated or difficult for foreigners about the Slovene language.

Slovene is supposedly one of the harder languages to learn so I made some research about why it may be so. I found out quite a few things that can complicate learning the language and got quite confused myself while making the video. 😅

This made me want to cry. The cases are probably the worst part to learn because of the dual and gender.... so actually it's also the dual and gender that are the worst part of slovene, making the cases even worse. This was a great video! I love it when Slovenes talk about grammar. Yay!

Very useful summary. I know Czech, Slovak and a fair bit of Croatian so I have a head start with cases, vocabulary etc. but the dual versions in Slovene are certainly an oddity. If you like Slavonic languages but cases are a problem, try Bulgarian or Macedonian: they don't have them. Stress is easy in Czech and Slovak: always the first syllable. But we can't get away from the annoyance that is grammatical gender.

Everybody learns standard Slovene in school so everybody should understand you if you speak in the grammatically correct Slovene. But with some dialects there are huge differences from the standard Slovene. Even I can sometimes not get some proverbs or words my grandma uses and she was raised in Ljubljana. You may have problems understanding some people with different dialects but I think it shouldn’t be the other way around if you learn the standard Slovene. Hope this helped some! 😄

I watched a lot of videos about learning the rolling R, and I found out that it helps if you start with the D sound. Then your tongue will be in the right position to pronounce the rolling R, too. For example, in these videos you can find exercises that will help you to turn that D sound into a rolling R. On the flip side, Russian has a different alphabet, but I'm still convinced that not Slovenian is the most difficult language in Europe) otherwise, it was a quite entertaining video, thanks

Hey. Singular, dual and plural only ? Nope. Almost all Slavic languages have different counting for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. En zvezek, dva zvezka, trije zvezki, štirje zvezki, pet zvezkov. And even the numbers change for each gender. Tri krave. Trije zvezki.

It acutally isn't that hard for somebody who knowns another slavic language. As a Serb I already understand 50% Slovenian and then I just have to learn gramm. I did it and it wasn't really hard, because it is similar to Serbian. Cases for the male gender are the same 🤣. Dual was the hardest thing at the start and I hated it. We also have something like that in Serbian but we don't call it for special gender category. For example, we have "Nas dvojica" (Midva) for two mans, "Nas dve" (medve), for two woman, "Nas dvoje"(Midva) if we're mixed. It also exists in Slovak but there's no cases and speical gender category... Accents aren't that hard, because we have something similar. Serbian helped me a lot for learning Slovenian. I can't even imagine how hard it is for somebody who speaks English, German, French..... It is beautiful language and I like it 😁

I'm a French native speaker and Slovene is the toughest language I've come across. I've learned japanese to an intermediate level, and Chinese to an advanced level and Slovene is hands down harder than these 2. I doubt any non slavic speaker can ever learn that language passed 20 without messing up the declensions.

  • @bojanstare8667

Dual is not just nouns "nasdvoje" but also verbs. And I know that you have the same form for plural and "dual": vasdvoje idete and "vi idete". Idete is the same. In our language is "midva greva" and "mi gremo". Just Lausitz Sorben in Germeny have almost the same form. One guy from Lithuania told me that they have in their language too. After I have showed him example, he said that I had right. And we have two defferent E, which one you couldn`t pronounce. Also three O etc. But your language has other letters Ć (for me is no problem), Đ (that is more problem to use Đ or DŽ - Đak or djak). So each language has some unique.
