Slovene! Learning A Foreign Language

What it's been like for me, an American from California, learning Slovene, a very foreign language. Spoiler alert: It hasn't been easy.

I live in Los Angeles, and about 7 years ago, I found my father's family in Slovenia. His birth name was Vremśak. We found his family who live in Kamnik and Kranj. My brother and I have been twice, and we LOVE the Slovene people. We were going to return this June, but travel is shut down due to Covid-9. I just discovered your channel, and am enjoying your shares about life in Lovely Slovenia.

As an American who has been learning Hungarian as a random side hobby/passion for 7 years, I must say that this entire video is GOLD. Although it's good to learn the grammar and vocabulary and all that stuff, you really must learn as a child does and immerse yourself in the language. For 2 or maybe 3 years I actually "studied" Hungarian and made much progress, but it was mostly "on paper". Since then, I've been regularly listening/watching in Hungarian. It's important to (at least mentally) mimic and imitate what you hear, as a child does, just trying to grasp onto things and recreate them even without understanding. THEN feel into and search out the meaning. As a learner of a foreign language, I highly recommend watching cartoons geared towards toddlers of that language. The pictures and animations and mood will naturally allow you to understand what's going on in the storyline, and from there a few particular words will grab your attention. Then suddenly you will confidently understand the words for "ball" or "cloud" or "butterfly" or whatever through sheer repetition and context. The traditional, scholastic method of learning a second language is opposite of how native languages are acquired. School will teach a huge list of nouns along with verbs in simple present tense. Natural learning (even childrens books) involves a small number of base words but in a large amount of tenses and moods etc. "Here is a cat. The cat is sleeping. The cat woke up. The cat ran up the stairs. The cat sees a mouse. The cat wants to eat the mouse. The cat chases the mouse."

As a Slovene that speaks 6 languages I really, really understand your pain. Whatever you say in Slovene is just incredibly specific. A simple sentence in Slovene language has just too many parameters. I can imagine it must be a nightmare learning it for other Slavs, let alone english speakers... so, hat off to you, you speak amazing.

bandrej x wow 6! Well then you should know. It’s nice that most Slovenes all recognize their language is really tough. It’s always the “sklon” that gets me.

Sklon is horrible. I remember the times when I was learning german and their cases were quite similar but in some cases they were completely different. How hard it must be for people who are native in a language who don't even have real cases.

My father was Croatian, my mother Slovenian. As a very young child I could speak various Croatian and Slovenian accents perfectly, as well as Serbian, and Macedonian. I learned Italian from the locals on Dalmatian coast, and German and Hungarian from my grandparents who lived in Prekmurje region of Slovenia. Anyone studying languages can attest few are harder than Hungarian. It does not belong in any language group, and the grammar will break most trying to use it. In school we used Serbo-Croatian, the official language of former Yugoslavia. (On the side note we also had 2 alphabets. Latin and Cyrillic). In 5th grade of elementary school we had to pick 2 foreign languages. I picked Russian and English. One thing about being young, you never say: “That’s too hard”. You accept it, and absorb it. I am convinced the best way to learn any language is to live with the locals, and become a sponge. Firstly, you’ll understand things without being able to answer back. later it will all fall in place. Also, like you suggested, one should never be afraid to try the new language, no matter how embarrassed. Locals will appreciate the effort. As an adult It’s hard learning another language, especially if you are changing language roots of origin. Germanic to Slavic, or vice versa. For an American, it’s very easy, well, it should be, to pick up German or Dutch for example. For me, it was a piece of cake to learn Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, or Bulgarian, since they are all in the same group. My grandmother had only four grades of elementary education, she lived off the land, but could speak Slovenian, German, Hungarian, and Croatian perfectly, without an accent. Every language changes all the time. They are dynamic, not static. Languages I was taught in school are not used on the streets… When I was speaking my classroom English to some new friends they looked me funny, and later explained why…Thank goodness for American movies, that’s how I “perfected” things. Most Americans I know had some foreign language exposure in school, but ended up dropping it, for whatever reason. Luckily the rest of the world speaks English. I’ve been living in the States for so long now, when I speak my native languages they tell me I’m speaking with an American accent. Oh well…as long as the meaning and the intent is there, that’s fine with me… Good luck to you!

Before I started primary school apparently I spoke Slovenian. Unfortunately, my parents were running a business and Australians were intolerant of foreigners so English took over. I studied Slovenian at University. I had similar embarrassing moments when I last visited. I was told that English is part of the school curriculum so younger people will be able to speak English but the may lose it over time. I have cousins in Ljubljana who speak english as well as me (probably better). There are plenty of english speakers whose grammar is terrible (you see some of them on TV & KZread. Certain politicians for instance). Your Slovenian is way better than mine! If I could speak as well as you I'd go back there and be confident. I am currently learning Russian and that "seems" much harder than Slovenian. When I finish (???!!!) Russian I am going to do a refresher on Slovenian as I intend to visit again. By the way, there are about 2 million Slovenian speakers outside Slovenija. Many in Australia and, apparently, Cleveland? Although, I doubt the grandkids are speaking it. My parents grandkids have no idea. Do you like Slovenija? I recall that it was very beautiful place. Lovely scenery. I agree with you about communication. If someone understand what you are trying to say then that is half the battle. Also, your thoughts on how to go about the language is similar to the way language teachers do it. An interesting video, thanks.

Čestitam ! Spoštovanja vredno je to, kar si povedala. Sploh ni važno, če kdaj kaj zgrešiš, važen je trud, ki si ga vložila in uspelo ti je. Moje spoštovanje. Veliko lepega ti želim! Si me spravila v še boljšo voljo :-) "Congratulations ! It's respectable what you've said. It doesn't matter if you ever miss something or say something wrong, what matters is the effort you put in, and you did it. My respect. I wish you all the best! You put me in even better mood :-) "

I also am from California, still living here though. There's a good chance I am related to your husband...jk. But I do know that last name and it's very possible we have mutual friends, given the size of the country and my experience being Slovenian. Both my parents were born in Slovenia, yet after 17 years of hearing the language I still can't speak in full sentences or understand everything. So in that case, I am amazed at how well you spoke in the video! Really need to step up my game...Thanks for sharing your experience, I always get excited when Americans are involved in Slovenian culture :)

This was really helpful and encouraging. I am an American living in Czech Republic trying to learn Czech. Much like Slovene, Czech is a very difficult, very different language compared to English, with almost no similarities to go off of. I have been studying in a classroom setting since September 2017, and have done pretty well. Obviously, I never expect to be fully fluent, but I do have a good practical command of the language now, and it slowly gets better. It was good to see and hear from another American who has studied a Slavic language and hear what worked and what didn't. Thanks, and good luck with your continued studies!

Well I will write in English hope will do it right couse if I write in Slovenian there is a slight chance that you won't understand it. Know that's hard to learn Slovenian because we have a lot of different dialects and accents. I'm from Notranjska and in my hometown you have one dialect and in town that I live now is like almost different country. But they are like 24 km apart. So it's hard for us who are living here from their birth I just can't imagine how hard it is for you to learn and speak. But in time everything can be done

well missy you just got yourself a new subscriber :) i'm usually not so much into vlogs, but this kinda hit home with me for some reason. And i agree your Slovene is really remarkable for someone who's only been here for 6 years. And had no prior run-ins with slavic languages. Amazing work.. My mother came to this country over 35 years ago and still has a much heavier accent than you when she speaks AND shes from Bosnia, where the language is not so vastly different than slovene.. Actually quite a lot of the words are spelled the same but with a different pronounciation and she still struggles quite a bit to get it right :) So compared to her, you're a native :) Keep up the good work and welcome to our little humble country :)
