Slovenian Words to Travel By | #1: Basic Words and Phrases

Welcome to Slovenian Words to Travel By! This is the first in a series where I talk about basic words and phrases to help you navigate Slovenia if you don't know the language. In this video, I talk about greetings, how to say please and thank you, "excuse me, I only speak English", and simple drinks to order at a restaurant.
If you'd like to read more about the things I cover here, check out my blog post accompaniment here: bit.ly/2Duep3j
What words or phrases would you like to see me cover in this series?
Thanks, I hope you enjoy my video! :) Share it around if you enjoyed it!

Hi Lyra! The word ‘Oprostite’ is also like “polite” version of ‘Oprosti’. Like if you say it to a random man/woman you don’t know or to elderly. ‘Oprosti’ is more like when you say it to a friend, family, somebody you know a long time - you grew up together or if you know them from your town your entire life, etc. The other word that means the same is ‘Se opravičujem’! Keep up the good work!

Interesting that you said 'adijo' is similar to [the French] 'adieu' or [the Spanish] 'adios' but you did not mention the Italian 'addio'... very likely the real origin of the Slovenian 'adijo' [which btw ultimately derives from the Latin 'a deus', like all other examples, including Portuguese 'adeus'].

Hello Lyra! This was such an incredibly helpful video, thank you! I feel much more confident in my pronunciation of Slovenian words now! My husband and I will be travelling to Bled later on in the year. He is a Coeliac, which means he cannot have any gluten whatsoever. Do you happen to know what "gluten free" would be in Slovenian? Thank you! :)

Imogen Moore no problem at all! A friend of mine is Celiac and when she visited the Netherlands she could eat it too. If I'm honest, I think the primary cause is all the glyphosate and other poisons the states uses that are banned in most of Europe. Such a long discussion though, there's a lot to unpack! I hope you have a wonderful time in Bled!! 💜

"Zdravo - beseda se povezuje z vzhodno Slovenijo in socialističnimi časi, dejansko je zelo stara: ekvivalent rimskega ave, recimo v Ave Maria, ki se v slovenščino prevaja kot zdrava Marija ali pozdravljena Marija (nenazadnje je koren tudi v besedi pozdraviti)" source: razvezanijezik.org/?page=pozdravi

I think the word "zdravo" was popularized in socialism after the WWII, superseding the old greeting "bogdaj". Now it's mostly elderly people using it and for some reason the whole eastern part of Slovenia. I come from the west and the most common word is živjo. I can imagine using myself Zdravo in a more formal setting though.
