I totally agree with your analysis! Fine-Art photography to me is always about the story. The subject I want to discuss with the viewer. The optical journey I want their eyes to take on the frame or on a series of images. Regardless if they are a sequence or not. There is a misconception in social media that fine-art photography is just landscapes and long exposures and HDR images. If you study photography you learn the true fine-art photography which is all about the artist behind the camera. Like a painter who expresses his emotions on a canvas. Unfortunately its rare to find people who truly produce true fine-art photography or even show their work.

Another very insightful video, Adam. I agree completely with your points. To me, the leap from simply taking pictures to making photographs came when I had practiced with my camera so much that I didn't even have to think about the technical aspect. The camera had become merely an extension of me. It was like becoming fluent in a foreign language. At that point I began to think of my photographs as art and the quality of the images made a huge leap seemingly overnight. They became emotional expressions.

Wow! Those three images were absolutely brilliant. They really conveyed feelings of calmness and space. With the rock image I love the way you composed that and what beautiful tones!!!

1 image a month is all you need. So very true "Twelve images a year is a good crop" (Ansel Adams). I'm so happy that Lexar are in business having been bought out I was worried that they would stop producing cards, I've been using them for the last 7 years and they are superb. I definitely love your definition of what is Fine Art, "what is your intention behind the work".

Excellent Adam, thank you that was a particularly good one for me because I live on the South coast of England. By far my easiest to reach location is the seafront yet I sometimes find it difficult to find compositions that I feel are going to inspire viewers. Your shots today suggest that in my own work I am at least barking up the right tree! regards Del

The image shown at 14:38 was a brilliant image, one of the better images I have seen recently. As for fine art photography, I would like to quote Ansel Adams “In my mind’s eye, I visualize how a particular… sight and feeling will appear on a print. If it excites me, there is a good chance it will make a good photograph. It is an intuitive sense, an ability that comes from a lot of practice.”

To me 'fine art' photography is more about setting a mood with the photo than it being an absolutely accurate image of what was taken. I think photography can broadly be sorted into 3 categories: fine art, documentary, and personal. The first 2 require a technical understanding of photography and how to manipulate it to capture an image. The key difference is whether fidelity to the event or scene is required. In the various forms of documentary photography fidelity is a requirement while in fine art it is not. Personal photography is often about people taking a photo with little thought about the image itself or about the settings used.

Adam, the RPS say that Fine Art Photography is "Photography which communicates a creative vision" and you have explained that very well. I really struggle with modern art, but others love it. What's that saying about beauty being in the eye of the beholder? I agree that a Big Stopper in itself does not make an image 'fine art' but the fact that it creates something beyond a 'record shot' does give it an arty feel. Fine art is that joining of an idea or concept to the final image. I have just started a project called 'inclement' and having a focus is prompting thoughts I probably wouldn't have had otherwise. Wellies and waterproof here we come. The things we do for our (fine?) art! Thanks for sharing Adam.

Steve; that definition actually makes sense for me! -As an Norwegian I'm really struggling with calling something for "fine art", (Just google "janteloven" and you will understand the Norwegian mindset.) and have problems to proclaim making fine art. Way too many people claim to make something they call art, while it really just is normal hand craft at its best. Maybe it should be called "Fine art style photography"? Then it would be up to the viewer to decide if it is art or not...

would appreciate details of your set up, especvially filters used and lens

what is the best lense for landscape fine art photography

I was surprised at the number of shops selling arty ink jet prints around Wells next the sea. I had a market stall selling black and white darkroom prints here in Stroud until the lockdown. I still have the darkroom so hopefully soon I can do that again. Colour doesn't do it for me but color inkjet prints do sell well. I have a friend in Stroud who sells views of the beautiful local countryside.

Whether it is photography, drawing, painting, illustrations, collage, or any other kind of art, it is subjective. It doesn't matter what the viewer thinks, as they can have their own perceptions about what the artwork is about. As long as you are having fun and/or have a meaning behind the work that is all it matters.

I admire you’re bravery in tackling such a subject! The OED has a definition that reads “A pursuit or occupation in which skill is directed towards the gratification of taste or production of what is beautiful. Hence the Arts: (specifically) = the fine arts.” You have to wonder whether or not with modern cameras and computers that the photographer is somewhat de-skilled though?

I really don't understand what words like emotion, vision and story have to do with photography. I'm not a creative, emotional person. So it's like a foreign language to me. I just want to take photos that people enjoy viewing

I'm a firm believer in the Walker Evans creed: The subject is in front of the camera, not behind the camera. The trick, perhaps, is to create fine art photographs but don't, like too many people in my photo classes, refer to yourself as a 'fine art photographer'. If you are, we'll figure it out.

I suspect that Walker Evans was referring to Stieglitz and his disciples.

I’m sorry but the thought behind a photo doesn’t change what’s in the photo so I don’t believe that makes it fine art. Fine art can have no thought of very k lol title thought behind it, it’s all about what’s in the frame

By that definition a chimpanzee could hold a camera and eventually get lucky and create a fine art image. Intention is absolutely essential in great art.

A common misconception but 'FIne Art' simply means 'that which the artist has envisioned' Another version of this is 'that which the artist translates' and another is 'that which the artist sees' - all of these refer to art and fine being the definition of the artists mind using whatever tools he/she uses to create it- whether physical or visual - what you are more specifically referring to is 'minimalist' or minimalistic' -most commonly understood as minimalism and that is a whole different art form and not to be confused with 'Fine Art'. By the very definition of the medium all photographers thereby create 'fine art' every time they press the shutter except maybe those out of focus pictures of cats; unless of course that is what the artist envisioned.... Do I call myself a 'Fine Artist because it increases sales? Of course!!!

Those pillars in a water is such a used , abused and overused composition.. exact same position, exact same exposure with slight difference in heights, there are like billions of them identical out there. You have to try really hard to make something exceptional from it. For example hardly anyone ever done an image from the sea perspective :D

And to think AI will replace all of that.
