It's fun, catchy, and simple. That resonates with people. Especially at the time when so much grunge/alternative music was dark, heavy, and much more moody.

I think it was a great counter complement to grunge. Totally different kind of vibe, but same angst with energy. Grunge might be seen as leaning a bit more metal, but all those bands shared entangled metal/punk roots. There was a certain comfort in making music that was anti-social/anti-establishment, and most of the music of the era was pretty solidly gen x, who were probably the first generation to see the hypocrisy that awaited them. And to your point, Dookie is maybe one step beyond the Ramones formula of simplicity. Great hooks at lightning speed. I think it was also situated, by happenstance, as an antidote to the whole Cobain saga, which supports your case. Hearing this record takes me right back to that time and place. Can't ask for more than that from a band or an album.

But the songs were so consistently so, so many memorable hooks, melodies, moments... one might say it was just catchy and simple, but I say Billie Joe went a bit further than that, it was almost Beatle'esque, the pop-punkishnish was simply a packaging. This was also around the time (IMO) NOFX had their version of this in Punk in Drublic.

Whenever I listen to Green Day, I think back to when their song Longview first became a hit, in 1994. A friend from work and I were waiting for the bus to go home, and I was telling him what a great song Longview is and what a great band Green Day is. My friend just totally dismissed them, saying "They're just another one hit wonder band and you'll never hear anything from them again." After he left our company, I wished we'd kept in touch, just so I could throw all of Green Day's hit songs in his face. Lol.

Dookie is dare I say, a masterpiece! I remember when this first came out and I played the hell out of this album when I was a kid. Lots of fond memories when I hear it. I think it still holds up well today and is Green Day's best album, IMHO. 👌

Man, this album is still relevant for me, who was born in 2002. What a timeless 14-track teenager anthem.

I was 14 when this came out and it changed my life. It helped me immensely as I was learning to play guitar and drums. It will always have a special place in my heart.

Pure classic album! But I gotta go with Insomniac as my all time favorite Green Day album. PLAY LOUD

Wow. Your production value and editing are insanely awesome. So entertaining. You really deserve more viewers! Dookie is my favorite Green Day's album. Especially since now I'm in mid 20s. "Burnout" (about life burnout), "Having A Blast" (tireless of society while suicidal at the same time), "Welcome to Paradise" (not sure living in big city but at the same time is also excited) are the songs that I can easily relate now.

I love how music can be heavy, and yet still have a great melody. It has attitude, but's still nuanced. Great review! 🤘👍

I was pretty young when this came out, and wasn't largely a music fan yet. But I remember listening to this cassette a bunch and really enjoying the energetic guitar riffs and insane drumming. I remember once hanging a portable tape recorder with a built-in speaker off the handlebars of my bike playing Longview and feeling super pumped when the chorus kicked in.

Heck yes! First album I ever bought. On a cassette tape. changed my life! I literally would not be the same person without this record.

I still remembering discovering Green Day from their Late Night with David Letterman appearance. Hadn't heard of them until then. I was in the kitchen when they started performing Basket Case and I was like"Holy hell this is catchy! Who are these guys?" and wandered over to the TV to see who they were. Bought Dookie not too long after this and was not disappointed.

It's strange - as big as this album was at the time, I find myself returning to Insomniac and Nimrod more often. They have that somewhat darker tone that just appeals to me.

I love Insomniac to pieces. To me, it seems to be Green Day's answer to the people who thought they were too pop for punk. It definitely captured the band at their darkest point, yet they still managed to make really catchy and upbeat music at the same time!

Cool to see George McFly reviewing these classic albums.

I was in my mid 20’s when this album dropped and hadn’t listened to any punk in a few years, being married, responsible and raising a small child. The sounds on this record brought the fun back to music and we’re a breath of fresh air that I needed. Thanks for another quality episode. What do you think about doing the Beatles red and blue album compilations. Thanks

I’m in my early 20’s right now and I fell in love with the album and punk music in high school. I’m hoping that somewhere in the future, another band like Green Day will come out and hit me the same way Dookie hit you.

@@jellybIood Why not start that band? And before you say "oh I can't play", that is the point of punk. Grab a guitar, work out a MAXIMUM of 4 power chords, turn it up LOOOUUUDDDD and have fun. That's what I did. Never quite turned into Green Day lol but I had a hell of a lot of fun and made lifelong memories. Hey, I even got asked to play an encore by a rock star lol, Bruce Watson of the band Big Country. 😀🤘😀

Man ! I totally love this analysis. Dookie was the album that got me into punk rock music and into playing guitar when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I'm 40 now, and Dookie is still my favorite punk rock album.

This record came out in the beginning of my teen years and had immeasurable impact. It was among the first CDs I had purchased for myself and I loved everything about it. Artwork, content of the CD sleeve, the hidden track… It is among the albums I’ve most listened to and can sing along the whole way through even when I go many years without hearing it. An excellent album that will always a special place in my musical journey.

This came out in 1994, I was 10 years old when it came out, this was my gateway album to punk rock when I was a kid. Between dookie, smashed by the offspring and out come the wolves by rancid those were the things that made me into a punk rock kid and now that I'm almost 40 I'm still that same punk rock guy. I still love this album to this day, it holds a special place in my heart.

Man, that was awesome. I've never seen anyone devote this much time and energy into analyzing Green Day's songs and lyrics. I'm literally wearing a Lookout! Records shirt and this video pops up on my KZread.

Such a great album! Sounds really good even today, and ALL the songs are killer! I was 13 when it hit, having just discovered rock. I knew I liked it because of the cover, I scissored out the cloud logo from an ad for the tour in the newspaper. They've been one of my go to bands since, I appreciate all their music except for F.O.A.M.F.

A lot of bands put hidden songs on their CDs at that time, sure. But, I'd say 'All By Myself' was THE hidden track. As in, everyone knew that song well. ALl of my friends loved that song on its own, for its ridiculousness. To this day, I'm not sure if there's another hidden track that stands up to it, and the place it holds.

Oh, I'm sure this is already known by your viewers, but DAMN your appt is right out of the late 70s into the 80s. Tube amp and turn table on the huge marble slab (audiophile much?), and large loud speakers. Wood paneling. Orange and brown colors. TIKI mug, ash tray, table lamp. Bravo. You are bringing back my PTSD of surviving that decade. 🙂

Great review of a great album, thanks man. Only thing that could be better was if the snippets of the music were a bit longer, but maybe that's a copyright issue. Anyway awesome format, please keep it up.

I was born in the late 90s and the first time I listened to Dookie was probably around 2009. This is the record that got me into Green Day along with the great American Idiot. The lyrics didn't matter that much to me at the time, but you could definitely tell there was something contagious and relentless that even teenagers today can relate to. I've always considered Dookie as one of the foundation of my relationship to music. It literally stood as a sign pointing towards everything else I've been listening to afterward. I have been a huge Green Day fan ever since.

That was an amazing synopsis! Only thing I would change in my opinion is that Sassafras Roots is a banger. Like, my favorite track after all these years. And also I’ve come to understand that When I Come Around Is way more a bitter song than you described given that the original chorus lyrics are “you better not come around”. Doesn’t matter tho because you killed it. Great video!!

Excellent review and analysis. I remember sitting in a van with 2 of my friends just listening to the radio. Then Basket case came on and we were instantly hooked. They were supposed to be my first ever concert but, they cancelled the show in Dublin that year. I think it was the insomniac tour.

I know right. I love Dookie and all of the songs have their place, but I always thought the first 3 tracks were a bit inferior to the rest. Longview is totally when it picks up and the rest is gold

When Dookie came out, I was twelve. A few months later, when I was thirteen, a friend played it for me at his house and I was completely blown away. I loved this album so much and it was truly my first favorite album. I think before this I mostly listened to the classic rock I had been exposed to by my step-dad, so this was the first music that, at the time, felt like it was really for me. My tastes changed here and there as I grew up, and at some point I no longer thought it was cool to like Green Day (and I cared about that silliness at a point in my life). But all these years later, I still have a huge soft spot for this album. This was a good review. I just discovered this channel today and watched one other video, and I just hit 'subscribe'.

I think the best songs on the album are the non singles I probably felt different when it first came out when Longview just hit MTV and I bought the cassette! I knew they were going to big after hearing Kerplunk! Their first 5 albums are my favorite especially Insomniac, saw them in 95 in Indianapolis 😊

Even though guitar snobs pan the riffs as too simple, Dookie is a masterpiece of energy and catchy melodies and lyrics through and through.

I hear this a lot. But his strumming and rhythm are Robert smith esque. Sound simple but are actually quite precise and complex. Anyone who says basket case is easy to play, isn’t playing it right. Haha

Green day has been my favorite band for over 20 years. The very first time I heard Longview I was hooked forever. Dookie is such a classic. Without Green Day I wouldn't be the same person at all.

This record is amongst my most listened to in my collection.

This video feels so 80’s, I love it.

Love this album. He's an excellent songwriter like Rivers Cuomo; able to be heartfelt and catchy while also being edgy and angsty. Came out while I was early teens... perfect!! But stands the test of time because of the talent of the band. Fun fact: I did a "musical style" spoof of Basket Case for fun once, and it really holds up and works as more than "just" a rock song. No surprise he went on to do a musical!!

This came out just as I was exploring music on my own and not just listening to what my parents were. 4th grade is when I first heard it I believe. Dookie and Nirvana unplugged were probably the two most influential albums of my childhood, so many great memories tied to this music. Thanks for such a great evaluation. I just picked up the vinyl today actually and can’t wait to get home and listen to it.

Every time I play this album it reminds me of being a teenager and going down to the 7-11 to get a slurpee and hang out with friends. Same with early weezer and guided by voices.

Great analysis. This was my fave album for a long time (was my no1 for the longest time of any album infact). I totally lost interest after Warning came out (I "burnt-out" on them). Still a great band though. This vid made me want to listen to the album again... good job.

I remember being in the pit at the Ranch Bowl in Omaha when they were touring for this album. How was that 28 years ago.

One thing missing from your description of WTP is that the bridge transition is not only just nice to listen to, but that IS the transition of time. The nervous kind of twangy beginning of the bridge to the eventual buildup to full power chords on like 6 tracked guitars kinda symbolizes them becoming comfortable in paradise without lyrics.

im glad I speak english now, but during a long time as a french I didn't..but the songs resonated still..and learning the lyrics doesn't change anything just complete the thing..and this is available for many enfglih speaking artist I used to listen from childhood to now;..more than 20 years without understanding anything but still, my favorites songs and bands are still the same!!
