What Makes Cancer So Hard to Cure

Cancer claims the lives of hundreds of thousands every year. So why can't we find a cure? What makes this disease nearly impossible to beat? Join Hank Green as he explains why it's harder than it looks, and what we CAN do in this new episode of SciShow!

I just find it really annoying that the immune system doesn't find anything wrong about a large group of cells splitting out of control and damaging the body.

Thats probably what we should be focusing on, modifying the immune system to destroy those cells and let the immune system do the rest.

There are ways to address that naturally by boosting the immune system with supplements. Your Cytotoxic T-Cell and NK Cells are the best one to stimulate as it's their job to address those abnormal cells.

Yeah but that's because the cells are designed to kill themselves if they detect something wrong. If there is a bunch of cells telling the body to feed them, the immune system will suspect nothing.

But the immune system does attack cancer cells, and many potential cancers are bit in the butt. But with the deadly cancers the immune does response but for many reasons it's not effective, and only kills some cancer cells as the cancer fights back, for example releasing chemicals that fools the immune system that they are normal is one way, or developing stealth that the immune system does( for the use of a better word) not see, then, for its a very devious and adaptable disease.

I've been challenged with breast cancer for 28 years. It metastasized, before the cancer was caught, so it has been quite a ride. Fortunately, modern medicine has kept one step ahead of the cancer so I'm still in the game but it hasn't always been easy. The treatments have killed off a lot of my heart and caused me to lose almost all my teeth. I've struggled with lesser problems, during the 28 years of cancer treatment, but these two have been my main problems. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have survived this long and I don't take any day for granted.

I had cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma. I cannot tell you how many people would be like "Try this cream! It'll cure you!". For one, no. For two, my cancer was a soft tissue bone cancer. It wasn't even on my skin. -.- Literally the only thing that worked for me after four recurrences was an amazing medical team, countless surgeries, two radiation treatments, and countless chemotherapy treatments. That and the lucky fact that my case was abnormal compared to most Ewing's cases as my cancer was extremely slow growing. I'm thankful for videos like this that educate and bring awareness to cancer in general. =]

Thank you. Great explanation for a "very" complicated subject. Two years ago I had external beam radiation treatment for my prostate cancer. So far so good. I "think" they have "got it". But, never underestimate cancer. It has a mind of it's own & is an extremely dangerous beast. My dad died @ 45 yrs from stomach cancer & his mother to. I thought by the law of averages I was @ risk also. I turned 45 & thought "yes" I've made it! Sadly, 6 months later I had a heart attack. 3 stents later I survived. My advice is to enjoy your life as much as you can with work, family & friends. When the time comes you can look back & say "I've had a good life". Life is short, enjoy!

Any cancer must not be treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but with healthy periods of starvation, consuming only natural / organic vegetables and fruits, with 8 hours of sleep every night, walks / exercises in nature (fresh air), without stress, optimistic ..., not eating sugar and meat at all ... the tumors being "digested" in a few months or even weeks (it is also highly recommended not to have any overload during the healing period). During the healthy periods of starvation, the body will begin to feed on all its unused tissues (including the tumors). Those healthy periods of fasting help our immune system and induce the state of ketosis (consumption of stored fat in the body) and gluconeogenesis, so that *through outdoor exercise, when we eat almost nothing for a long enough period, our body will "digest” also all tumors in the body.* Many other diseases can be prevented and cured in this way (such as: diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, obesity, etc.). Anyone can do an easier experiment. For a weekend, eat nothing but drink, few times a day, some tea with lemon and a little honey, taking on these occasions a tablespoon or two of black grape seed powder. The tea can be made using only lemons, well washed, cut into slices and squeezed in water before being boiled (enough, but not too much). Then, after it is no longer hot, sweeten with a little honey (100% natural) and add a new / fresh slice of lemon, also squeezed into the cup / glass of tea. I make my own black grape powder at home from dried 100% organic black grape pomace, ground with a coffee grinder (the consumption of black grape powder during healthy periods of fasting, with outdoor exercise, destroys the cancer cells). I am sorry because many people do not know enough biology to be able to understand all the details from the correct treatment for cancer that I have explained above. Also, most people do not know that it has been proved already that the black grapes powder consumption, over the healthy fasting periods (with outdoor exercise), makes the cancer cells kill themselves. In addition, it seems that many people do not know the fact that, for those without very serious illnesses (in the final stage), the Covid virus infection is cured with hot teas with lemon and aspirin, propolis... simple natural remedies (in addition to good ventilation of the rooms). Of course, during the fever / sweating (when the wet clothes are always changed with dry ones) do not eat anything other than the teas (at first not sweetened at all, then only with a little honey) and, when possible, more sun exposure (outdoor movement). For example, to start solving Covid-19 and other health problems, anyone can follow that quite easy treatment/experiment explained previously/above (with those lemon teas etc.) If you do not have black grapes powder, the aspirin will be also good enough, but it must be dissolved into the mouth, with some tea, before to be swallowed with the rest of the tea (to not damage the stomach lining). An additional useful thing, which can be done from time to time, is to keep a clove of garlic in your mouth until it dissolves completely (in other words, it is eaten very slowly, for as long as possible). For your health, in general, try to *avoid sugar, meat and sedentary lifestyle, besides keeping a continuous 7 or 8 hours sleep each night.*

I think this is very important because not many people know that cancer is a disease that has over one hundred types, they think its the same thing that grows in different parts of the body, They don't realize that the cells are different and have different mutations that are not easy to specifically target. Maybe we should be focusing on prevention of the genes that turn on cell growth instead of killing the cancerous cells. We just need a break through for this horrible disease.

    - Not a conspiracy, Just a personal story, you decide for yourself. Cancer is hereditary in my family, but my when my grandmother had cancer, a chemist that specialized in the field got her a medicine that was great and not $1000 a pill like today. She was cured, but later passed away from old age. However when my mother was around 40 she found out she had cancer. So we went to see the same chemist in Queensland for what my grandmother took, and he said he could no longer get it because the pharmaceutical company's got wind of it and made it illegal. I mean how messed is that?

In many cases yes, absolutely. The problem is, there are also a lot of types of cancer we can't knowingly prevent because we're not sure how to yet. Help prevent lung cancer by avoiding smoking, many types of cancer formation can be prevented by avoiding heavy alcohol consumption, certain types of skin cancer are prevented by protection from the sun's harmful rays, and there are of course more ways to prevent cancers by maintaining good health in general. But there are also many more we're not yet sure how to prevent specifically.

I think we have to face the fact that they haven’t got a cure for cancer,as usual some things work for some people but not others,I have just been diagnosed with bladder cancer and been in hospital for a biopsy which came back positive an aggressive form of cancer and they want me to go back and have some more samples taken from my bladder to see if they managed to get it all. They were all very kind at Wigan Hospital and I would like to thank all the staff concerned with the care they gave me. The team have told me there’s a lot they can do but I won’t be expecting any miracles.

I could see the argument that cancer drug companies are doing their best to not find a cure, but what about everyone else who is working on it? Besides, a cure would be worth a lot of money anyways.

Wow, re-reading my comment made me kind of sad. Sorry for introducing more sadness into your life.

I feel like society has concentrated solely on cancer. There are MILLIONS of deadly diseases out there: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Schizophrenia, Cystic Fibrosis, Alzheimer's, etc are all leading illnesses for death... yet cancer has the most support. Physical illnesses are given more attention than mental illnesses simply because they are "visible." People tend to ignore that depression and anorexia are important too. Yet, instead, individuals make remarks saying that being suicidal is "attention-seeking" or "fake." Suicidal rates are spiking up and no one cares that teenagers OUR AGE AND YOUNGER are debating whether to take their life or not. I fully support cancer survivors and hope the best for those battling it. And, I, too, deeply grieve for them... However, I hope that everyone will start discussing other illnesses. Because, even the common flu, has killed many people. Yet, no one. NO ONE. Ever mourns for them. I realize that a cure has been developed for the common flu but whoever died because of it should not be forgotten. They mattered to this world too. And, yet, NO global contribution or donation was made to help them. So please, if you are going to raise awareness about one particular illness - make sure to not forget others that died. Kay thankx :) Nice post btw.

All cancers have basic things that can be targeted such as their peroxide intolerance, the microbes that cause most cancers, lack of anticancer cytokines and superoxide dismutase, etc. Ozone therapy addresses all of these, which is why there are so many medical studies proving its efficacy against cancer. The reason it is not allowed is because it is cheap, highly effective and can be easily done at home bypassing doctors and hospitals. This makes ozone therapy a major financial threat to some major corporations.

+Adrian07z "Cancer is a lack of vital nutrients," No, it's not. Cancer is developed by certain random genetic mutations that occur in one's cells in any tissue found on the body (as stated by the video and every biological study on cancer). While a lack of vital nutrients will certainly increase the likelihood of mutations (which could lead to cancer), it's not directly responsible for cancer. If cancer was only a result of lacking "vital nutrients" (though you should have really defined what "vital nutrients" are), then ionizing radiation wouldn't cause cancer. "Easily curable with plants." Alright bud, if that's all it really takes to cure cancer--plants--then I suppose all pharmaceutical companies are indeed "criminal". Now.... There's one little problem. While you are right to say that a plant can't be patented, a formula or object or anything, really, that makes use of a plant can in fact be patented. Sorry to say, but smoking weed isn't going to save you from cancer. If anything, things like cannabis oil that is used to make certain medical treatments might, however, and those can definitely be patented.

A lot of research companies aren't actually looking for a cure. My cousin is a biomechanical engineer who researches cancer. His first job in a lab told him, "Just worry about finding new medications that can be made cheaply. We don't care about finding a cure." I wish I could remember which company that was.... He was PISSED when his boss told him that. I honestly wasn't surprised tbh, that attitude was extremely prevalent in psychiatric care back then - I grew up with WAAAYY too much psychiatric care in the 2000s and first half of the 2010s. Just to clarify, this *IS NOT* a "big pharma" bullsh*t post. I merely want people to research an organization before donating your money to them. If you're hoping for better treatments, donate to people researching that. If you want cures, donate to people researching that. Not all charities are created equally. Some organizations worry more about money than helping others (example: most of the highly commercialized charities you see on TV).

    - Look into cutting sugars and keep a low glucose diet. - Learn about how testosterone also accelerates c. evolution . - Learn about citric acid against c. too. - absolutely cut off alcohol. In the absence of good blood flow / tissue oxygenation, mitochondria is using "fermentation" of glucose/sugar as energy source (thus not allowing for the growth mechanism to be correctly regulated at mitochondria level) - you can improve blood flow oxygenation with sport activities and massages.

Well it would be kinda tough to take every baby born and sequence all their genes to find a mutation and then figure out how to set up CRISPR to fix these genes so that everything looks good from the get-go... and then gene mutations can also be turned on as a life progresses... so that wouldn't really work.

Glad to hear you are in remission, but remission does not mean cured. Cancers frequently return within a few years with allopathic therapies for several reasons including metastases from biopsies, failure of the therapies to work in the hypoxic regions of the malignant tumors and due the carcinogenic properties of radiation therapy and some chemotherapy drugs.

These viruses insert their oncogenes in to our own genes altering the way they function such as turning off tumor suppressor genes and increasing growth hormones. Maybe when they let you out again you can go to a library and start doing to some basic research on the facts so that not everything has to be explained to you.
