Why is it so hard to cure cancer? - Kyuson Yun

We’ve harnessed electricity, sequenced the human genome, and eradicated smallpox. But after billions of dollars in research, we haven’t found a solution for a disease that affects more than 14 million people and their families at any given time. Why is it so difficult to cure cancer? Kyuson Yun explains the challenges.

    Cancer is an extremely difficult disease, and the only hope we have to cure it is to understand it. If you'd like to get up to speed on where we are in this journey, the book we recommend at the end of this video is a great place to start. You can download a free audiobook at adbl.co/2gauxND. TED-Ed A question I ask myseld for some time now: Why does not everyone get checked every few years if there are any cancerous cells in their body? Is it not detectable so easily? Would it be harmful to test? Is it too expensive? Hope someone can answer this :)

  • @panpiper

    @panpiper

    6 жыл бұрын

    Languste You should be getting checked yearly. If you are over 50, you should be getting checked every six months. Most cancer IS detectable early and MUCH easier to cure if detected early. It is not harmful to test for it and most tests are not expensive. Ask your doctor.

  • @Languste

    @Languste

    Peter Cohen Didn't know that, thanks for the fast answer :) What I should have told is that I am only 17 and not in a very high risk to get cancer; nonetheless, getting checked regularly would not be bad :P When will this testing start? At what age?

    Languste As a general rule, you should get a checkup every year, regardless of youth, and then increase that as you age. Even young people can get sick, and it sucks even more to die of cancer or something when you are young. We older folks have at least had some extra time with life. A young person with cancer, diagnosed early, is VERY unlikely to die from it. Ignore it for a few years however (you might not even know without a checkup), and it could kill you.

    I had a dog named Luckie, he lived with us for 7 years and almost made it to 8 years but he started getting sick and that's when he caught cancer which was incurable and started getting worse over time. We had to put him down because we didn't want to see him rot to death. I've never cried so hard over a loss like this in my life because he was my best friend. I bursted into tears as soon as I saw him stop moving. Luckie if you can hear me, I love you and miss you, I wish I could get you back but your gone. R.I.P Luckie.

    I hope science could find better ways to cure cancer, with low side effect. Recently I just lost someone that's really close to me, she had bone cancer. But she also had PTSD, schizophrenia, and diabetes. Which is I believe make things worse for her, physically and mentally. She passed away 1 week after her first chemotherapy. Well, one thing I can say, at least now she can rest in peace. And for every cancer fighter out there, I am praying for all of you (just like everybody else who loves you). cancer is like lesser advance organism than humans with the same motto to increase life span..."Cancer is a cell that is trying to become immortal" that is really well said

  • @lorenz2781

    @lorenz2781

    2 жыл бұрын

    There are two problems that cancer inherently has, which unfortunately will never or only rarely be adequately adressed: 1. Cancer cells are human cells. Albeit cancer cells majorly disrupt organ function by invasion and kill you in the end, Cancer cells are VERY similar to normal organ cells - in fact genome-wide only a handful of genes in the total of multiple of thousands of genes are mutated. This is why the immune system by far cannot as easily detect cancer cells as it can e.g. detect bacteria. And here for the same reason treatment as well will never be able to precisely kill a cancer cell as well as e.g. antibiotics do with bacteria - generally speaking of course, there are singular exceptions. 2. Darwinistic Selection applies to everything reproducing - humans, animals as well as bacteria (-> antibiotic resistance), viruses and cancer cells. In chemotherapeutic cancer treatment it is not about the singular tumor mass but about every single cell on its own. They reproduce and by reproducing they as well mutate due to a concept in living organisms called 'fault tolerance'. So whatever treatment you apply - be it the standard chemo therapy targeting highly mitotic cells or the 500k$ chimeric antigen receptor T-Cell therapy - in the billions of cancer cells making up the e.g. 3cm large tumor mass in your lung one cell will spontaneously mutate and gain a resistance towards your treatment. For example one lung cancer cell will by chance have a mutation in one of its efflux channels which changes it in a way that the chemotherapeutic agent will be kept from the cell or concerning CARTCT the tumor antigen (at the moment CD19) mutates and the CARTC cannot bind anymore. To circumvent this , a 99.99999% elimination rate is not enough - it has to be explicitly 100%, something only surgery in an early localized stage with a wide safety margin may accomplish.

But I'm thankful I got leukemia to be honest it made me more thankful for life, more positive and overall a much better person. I'm going to try to become a researcher and put my all into finding a cure for this horrible disease so no one else has to suffer or question whether they are going to die or not like I and many others have.

    @@midnightmusic1087 not true. Once you get cancer,it is in your blood and throughout your body. It can and does go dormant. This is called"in remission". If you were told by a doctor after testing posative that you had cancer,you still have it. Don't kid yourself. We all live with carcenogens in our blood that are killed off by our immune system. I am a 3time survivor of cancer. Having it is a very harsh reality. I have never known a cancer survivor that has not tried to"wish it away",but we all go there to that world of wishes. Perhaps one day it will be cureable. I mean completely,no dormant cells waiting for a life event,or stress,or bad eating and exercise habits. I wish you a long life! My mom, a 2nd grade teacher for 40+ years, came home to hospice care on Monday because of Stage IV B Uterine cancer. She was in complete remission last December. She is full of spirit, but she is bedridden b/c her fight left her legs with Lymphedema causing them to be so heavy she cannot walk. Sadly, treatment is not an option b/c she cannot walk and is considered too weak. The hardship on me and my family is great. The burden she has been carrying is even greater. It pains me to think that her spirit may be extinguished and someone that brought a lot of joy and love into this world will soon be gone. I pray every night asking that she be given a miracle so she could walk again and get the treatment she needs to survive a couple more years. And everyday, I stay hopeful. I understand Cancer is part of nature and balance BUT I hope one day we can slow it down. My mom turns 77 on July 18th.

    H MN it's more like epigenetics, if you want cancer to grow give it the proper environment. If you don't want it to grow take away its environment. From ph levels to excess animal protein levels to not giving your body the proper nutrients it needs to fight disease or to heal itself all play a vital role. Everyday everyone is fighting cancer some people just give cancer a more "comfortable" home than others.

    Many cancers utilize glycolysis, which requires glucose in the blood. Not only can they metabolize a glucose molecule for energy, but also, they also use the lactic acid that is generally considered a byproduct (and why your muscles give out after heavy use). This is why they prefer an energy source that provides two, "energy units," per glucose molecule when they could be obtaining 36, "energy units," from the same process our mitochondria use. This is an ancient metabolic process that predates multicellular lifeforms. When the cooperative processes go awry, a single cell will try to resort to its most ancient coding instead. How to reduce constant glucose in the blood stream to reduce cancer risk? Reduce insulin levels and insulin resistance. How? Lower carbs/sugars/ultra processed foods and fasting. Yes, change your diet. More info: The Cancer Code by Dr Jason Fung. edit: I do want to add that not all cancers are from this, such as leukemia and cancers from irritants, like from smoking) but many of the most prevalent cancers we struggle with currently fall into this category.
