I thought this video was going to cover the awkward silence that occurs between people who have just met, or are on their first date together. I noticed that there is a difference in scenarios that affect how your shared moment of silence with someone feels: There is a person who you know, are close with, and are confident that your feelings are mutual (you both like eachother). When a moment of silence shows up, it's not awkward at all. You're both comfortable with just being silent together. When it is a first/second date, or you're hanging out with a new friend; there are certain expectations rising up. The whole hanging-out session is a trial to see if you're worth eachother's time. So when silence arises, it could mean one of few things: You got nothing in common to discuss, you're too boring/awkward to converse with, or the conversation is simply over. The first two examples are commonly what we suspect to be the cause; this sends us into panic: you are failing the trial! If you weren't, shouldn't there be *more* to talk about? Shouldn't you be having a good laugh right about now?! What do you say next to keep the person interested?! That is why the silence shared between two or more parties make them feel uncomfortable and can be considered "awkward". Nobody likes being socially rejected. That's my speculation, of course.

I know it takes more work to read instead of listening to someone tell you about it but it might work for you. Especially if you don't like funny people, you can be as normal or funny as you want when you read the news yourself.

I leave the silences be, no matter how uncomfortable they make me or the person I am talking to, especially after a question. Gives them actual time to think and respond. It may be awkward, but I bet you they will feel like they were totally listened to when the conversation is done.

I usually pretend to text someone on my phone if a conversation between myself and another person in the room gets too quiet. I see a lot of people doing this, and I honestly think that a little over half of them are doing the exact same thing I'm doing; pretending to be talking to someone else.

depends on the circumstance, as Ross said, it's about flow. silence has it's own kind of flow, and some conversations can naturally go into silence without breaking that flow. but in other cases, the silence can be jarring. I dunno, maybe I'm just a nut job :)

During awkward silences, I talk to myself in the most quiet voice that only I can hear, and start counting things, and telling myself how awkward this is, then I start playing with m fingers and act like there is something really intriguing about my finger nails, and I jump into my own world, to avoid their awkwardness spreading onto me.

As a recovering stutterer, this could seem almost impossible to avoid at times. I sometimes have to take about 5 seconds to get my words out because I have to (in my mind) try to change the tone of the word before I say it. By the time I have the power to say what I needed to say the person I was talking to usually seem uninterested. If another person is in the room when I have trouble saying a word and need a few seconds to say it correctly, the person talks to that other person in the room; completely ignoring me. It's kind of rude but I let it slide because they don't understand how it feels to have a speech disability.

Because conversation is the primary means of breaking the ICE between people. The ice of your defense mechanisms needs to be broken or maybe it would be better to say melted. You rely on other people to do your own inner alchemy. If stimulating conversation is disarming, then the opposite must be true of silence for the most part

If I am having a conversation with a girl that i like i normally embrace the silence to look into her eyes but if its a guy I just start talking bout how their favorite sport team sucks or make a excuse to leave

Ever since I first watch this video. I usually break awarded silence by saying something before 4 second even if it's entirely random

ive been more or less out of the loop in terms of this whole socializing fad when i went through some antisocial years, so i have a question about silences with your friends: are they all awkward? is every time you don't talk a bad sign or whatever the opposite of brownie points are or something?

One thanksgiving dinner, my uncle bob said, "oh mister center of the universe", and I said, "well technically everyone is at the center of the universe" boom an eternity of silence. At that moment I wanted to leave the dinner table and hide in a closet.

I like silence. I prefer it because I can think clearly. For me the conversation is the awkward part.
