Thanks for the question Dr Brackett. I am going to say yes, I am a good listener. I have been told this. This is also because I am an arts teacher. There comes with the domain of teaching art an ease of conversation with students, whether it’s because I teach content that my students don’t usually have adults talk to them about before or whether it’s because my classroom climate looks and feels safe…I don’t know, as a teacher I am a good listener because my subject is safe, the performing arts and literature studies give myself and my students the conditions to feel safe, to explore the human condition with their own unique articulation of thoughts about the characters they will play or the relationships in the novel. So maybe it’s because I teach content that is so compelling beautiful and complex that I end up listening to my students who are themselves compelling, complex and beautiful. I also have to say, I feel I am a good listener because my lecturers were good listeners. They embraced my identity, understood my post-colonial state and in return I am doing the same for my very diverse class of South African students. 💛

Are the strategies of active listening different when your listening to someone but they may not be telling you the whole truth? Is clarifying questions the best way to get to the heart of the matter? Or are there different strategies to imploy?
