I've cut firewood with a 70cc saw, and I've cut firewood with a 30cc saw. it just depended on what I was cutting. my go-to is my stihl ms170, but that's because I usually cut wood less than 16" in diameter.

Lovett brother as long as you're putting wood on the truck! Know your saw know your chain and what you're doing with your machine that's the most important. I've learned some things from your videos in that thank you so much.

Good, concise overview of firewood saws. A great start for a novice. Echo might be one to add to this lineup.

I just bought my first saw MS 261 for firewood. Really pleased with it. Ran my dads 361 a few times helping him get wood and I like the trade of less weight over more power. Cutting mostly lodgepole, doug fir, and alpine fir. 20" and have fell as big as 26" tree. Took a bit longer but makes you put a lot of thought into your technique.

Love my 044 tend to grab it before anything else

Very clean o44! I like how it has a 440 tank on it.

I think Kensie's Papa Smurf got me looking at the Blue saws and one thing lead to another and all of a sudden I have two blue saws, a red Makita (Makita=Dolmar for those that don't remember) and a side trip to a Jonsered or is it two.....yeah two. One in a box waiting to get top end installed. Kensie is excellent. As is your channel sir. Thanks for the tour.

Tinman, Came over from Buckin's channel recently. My first saw that I still have since new is the Husqvarna 350 Model Year 2000. Has many hours on it and has served me very well. @@ronweaver9296 Hi Ron.....Thanks for your comments. My 1st saw and still with me is the Husqvarna 350. A short time ago moved it up from an 18" to 20" bar. Along with that my son's Jonsered 2045, it has issues, but pretty tough. Then there is the Dolmar PS-421 that was gifted to me. Not bad for a small saw. I agree with you, "When that's all you got make it work", and that is how I have learned a bit about keeping these three (3) running. Trying at times, BUT, learning. My 'Mentor' recently is on KZread at: kzread.info If you have not seen his videos before you might find him interesting. A down to earth decent soul. Be well and take care!

My everyday saw is a husky 350 that was given to me with a scored cylinder. I ported it and run a 20" bar. Absolutely love it. I want to change it over to a 3/8 chain. It stretches the .325 chain pretty quickly

Best saw is the one that always starts. I've got an old 038. And it's a real cold blooded s.o.b. now my 462...fires every time. Great wood saw. But I still love my 038.

Modded 162SE is my favorite saw in my collection. It's a beast.

New subscriber here. ;-) I have two 40 years old saw (Homelite XL-1 AO 16'' bar and a Jonsered 52E 20'' bar, both original) a 23 years old Husqvarna 371XP with a 28'' bar and a 17 years old Jonsered 2095 Turbo with 36'' bar (as a ripping-milling saw). I still do like to use the XL-1 AO, a quite strong/capable machine for its 41cc, until the vibrations bother me then my favorite one is the Jonsered 52E and the 371XP when I really need it. Except for the Jonsered 2095, all my chains are full chisel with square sharpening. I rarely put weight/lean on my saws, I let the chain do all the work. Thank you to share your knowledge and for your advices :-D

I’m a big dolmar fan as well. I wish they would have caught on more. Great line up of saws!

I tend to fall back to my beloved vintage stihl 08 as often as I can. Was my firt saw, and has never had a problem. Nice RICH carb tuning, .404 chain, hard nose bar. My other vintage saws that I run alongside would be: Stihl (045AV, 070, 090G), ALPINA A90 (would be nice if you could run one on the chanel), and a Homelite super mini. Nice chanel, subscribed and will be watching from Chile South america. (I live between here and Sweden)

Tell ya what. I bought MS 250 11yrs ago when I bought my house with a wooded lot. I have put that saw through literal hell and don’t quit. I put an 18” bar on it and keep maintained very well and keep extra sharp chains at the ready. Starts 3-4 pulls every time, even in the dead of winter. I do plan on purchasing a MS291 in the near future.

I wish we still had a good saw builder in my area. My friend used to build all my husqvarna saws but he’d only build the older ones. He had probably 35 different Husqvarna saws. He had 288’s,272’s,266’s,268’s,262’s and all were ported. Unfortunately his saw shop caught on fire early one morning and he was trying to put it out with a water hose and he had a heart attack and died. The fire melted the plastic off everything he had. He was a great friend and I miss him dearly. He had just finished a 272 xp a couple months prior and give it to me. My Husqvarna 55 and a 347xp he was working on for me burned up in his shop though according to his family. 😰

I started with a 455 and now running that a 372, I also have to clear a lot of downed cottonwood here on Van Island with are 28- 60”

And if you're doing alot of limbing a big saw will wear u out

Iv had a few new husky 460s they are really nice with a 16-20inch bar they eat through hardwood really well and they're very ergonomic. They are a little bit expensive brand new but at one point I had four of them, cut a hell of a lot of 16" rounds with them

I was given a stihl 034AV it's a bear to start like 20 pulls but the reward is it cuts like a bear when you get it going , my best saws are old Homelites XL 130 and XL 76 just hard to find parts like oiler pumps , clutches enjoyed the video

a tune up should have that 034 running in 5 pulls or less.

I would tell you what I have but after watching you and listening very closely i now have realized that I have an imposter in my barn and it’s actually a muffin cutter dressed up like a chainsaw and now that I’m hooked on chainsaws like yourself and a couple others on here that I watch and I’m blaming this addition on y’all lol I can’t believe how little I actually knew and you my friend should be a teacher in this trade,you are extremely easy for me to learn from more so than many others,thank you very much for taking the time to explain things with extreme kindness and you don’t make a persons lack of knowledge as a negative on the individual,would like to spend a few days on my mountain just working with you and learning from you because this big timber is a tad spooky at times with this 50cc 20 inch Bar lol

Well Tinman, I have to say I like your style. You had a great selection of saws on the bench and gave about the least biased opinion I think I’ve ever heard on the Tube. Reliability and cost of ownership are such huge factors. I’ve ran some pretty scurvy looking saws and trucks for that matter! My pride isn’t on the table. If a machine can do an effective job of the task on hand without breaking the bank or my body, I’m quite satisfied. Bless’ns to ya, Tedd

I try to be unbiased as honestly every brand has good saws and bad saws. Which are good and bad is a matter of oppinion.

Thinking about getting one. From what I've seen after researching, the Timberwolf seems to be the most capable saw under $500. I bought the 45cc ms250 a couple years ago, and it is most definitely not enough saw for a lot of the wood I run into.

Echo just launched some new saws. I still believe in the 260/261. It’s great, and if you need a bigger saw the. Use it. Only own a 500i right now but have used saws at work for years. Lighter weight matters to me. Getting older

That's what I have and I love it, of course anything is a step up from the 80$ home depot homelite 4218 that I was running. Although the homelite is still running (can't seem to kill the thing) even though the exhaust ports fell out a long time ago so its a screamer

I'm a firewood guy. For many years, my faithfull 266 served me well. It finally played out. So I bought a new saw. Didn't like the new huskies. I think they ruined em. I bought a Echo 620. AWESOME saw. Every bit the saw my 266 was. I'm in the south. Big hickory, oak. Buckin taught me how to sharpen my chain properly. Echo is no joke. Like your channel.

Good advice. The husky 266 se was tops for a 66 cc saw.

My dad prefers the 50cc class saws for their weight and decent power. I bought my first saw either 3 or 4 years ago, a stihl ms391. I've been around saws my whole life, and have been running them for 8 or 9 years. 2 years ago I bought a stihl ms661, and even though it has the M-tronic system, I've never had any problems with it. Firewood, tree removal, and soon land clearing will be it's job.

I'm using a MS 391 for my daily fire wood, great saw only starts to struggle on the really big stuff. I want to get a MS 661 for Christmas.

The 365 Special he mentioned would be a good option as well. I heated my house in northern Alberta for over a decade, mostly using a 365 with a 345 in the truck as a spare. I recently picked up a 565, then converted the old saw to a 372.

That ported 365 is an absolute monster. I ported it as more of a fun project then anything. Now that its done and I've run it for a bit I don't think I'm in any hurry to put a 52mm big bore on it..

I'm glad I started with a cheep saw, it makes me appreciate the new saw I bought a lot more. The 460 rancher seemed like a rocket ship compared to the 30 year old poulan and the chinese saws I have owed. And now I have a 390xp coming I'm glad I owned the rancher. I think you can develop bad habits just relying on brute power from the start. I let my friend use my friend use my rancher, he owns a 372xp, and he was complaining it wasn't sharp and making saw dust, he made about 4 labored cuts in a 20 log. I took over and when I cut there were nice big chips laying on the top of his dust. Unfortunately I think he over heated the saw and the next day it wouldn't start and was low on compression. Turns out the ring was stuck/lost tension but the bore is okay. Lesson learned, don't lend your saw to anyone even if they have been cutting for years.

How did he manage to make sawdust when you made chips with the same chain? Was he ripping the log? I don't get it. The only situation that comes to mind where this is possible is if you have your rakers too high, but not high enough that you can't cut at all. Then, if you apply enough force on a small area, you can still make chips, but if you cut normally, you will just make smoke and sawdust.

Trusty 353 did all my firewood till I turned professional. Amazingly economical saw...like them all needs a sharp chain and rakers filed to suit the wood you're cutting. Also got a 565 now. Eats wood, plenty of grunt for me. Spent a bit of money but saws are my thing!

I got a mix of everything Poulan 3400s. Homelite xl12s Husky 51 and a 55rancher And a bunch more

I bought a ms311 a few years ago. I dig that saw but my buddy started leaving his grandpa's old husky 65L at my place and now my 311 spends a lot more time under the bench.

Mac Pro 610. I have Stihl MS 310 and 462 for most cutting, but love that Mac.

I have the same super mini from 1979 that is my Dad's. Good memories from firewood days! Trying to get it running smooth again, but i think it has an air leak.

I cut 12+ cord a year. I run a stihl ms 362cmR. I put a Egan straight shot muffler, a red beard air filter, big 5point dogs, 28" stihl light bar. Cut mostly tamarack and doug fir and it hasn't let me down! If u have the chance to give one a try i highly recommend it.

Both good picks. Was hoping to see you adjust the carburetor with your preferred gas mix. Recently bought a Husky 120 for limbs. It has same carburetor arrangement. Would like to hear how you tune that type saw.

Jonsered 630 good firewood saw - Also run couple 2171's They are tough as nails but tad heavy- Old 55 rancher probably one best firewood saws ever especially for old cutters

The old 034 036 are also a good firewood saw, but yes I agree the 60cc range is a real nice balance in power and weight.

In 1988 I bought a 034 built in West Germany to cut firewood. At the time that was quite an upgrade from my Homelite XL130. Vertical piston, antivibration, safety brake! Still runs great.

For the longest time I only had a 435 and a 450 and both did great on oklahoma hardwood

When I first started cutting firewood when I was in my early teens for the camp cabin I used my dad's Homelite 150 automatic with a 14"bar, that saw cut plenty of wood for that old cabin. Now when i go to cut firewood i have 3 saws i generally take with me depending on the size of the tree I'm cutting, Always on the truck is an old McCulloch Mac 3200 with a 14" 3/8 bar/chain, a Husqvarna 55 with a 20" 3/8 bar/chain and either a Husqvarna 576 with a 24" 3/8 bar/chain or a Stihl 066 Clone with a 28" 3/8 bar/chain. And on a rare occasion when the stump is 4ft or more across the base I'll pull out the Stihl 070 with a 3ft 404 bar/chain. I have many other saws that I use but these are the one I'll grab 95% of the time cause these are the ones I like. I agree with you any one of the saws you mentioned will put wood on the truck all day long and in the end it comes down to personal preferences and the amount of money one has to spend. I personally don't own any Dolmar's/ Makuta's but have worked on a few and I really like there design and power to weight ratio, I'll own a couple in the future. Thanks for the comment Craig!! I cut all of my wood with a stihl 025 for several years, as our need for wood increased I started getting larger saws. Now I'm just a saw nut, way too many saws for one guy!! You still have your 576? How has that saw treated you? Mine is still in a box but I think of rebuilding it once a week but still haven't picked up bearings. I may just buy my buddy's 576 as he'd sell it to me if I want it.

@@tinmanssaws Love my 576 its treated me really good, Gobbs of power especially down on the bottom end, They say the 576 equals the 390 in power but I can't say I've never ran a 390. The 575 that ingested all the fines past the poor filter mount seal is still in pieces but I have all the parts to reassemble it. The 1 down fall of the 570, 575, 576 series of saws is the PTO Proprietary Crank Bearing only available from Husqvarna at around $38 where I purchase from, There is some aftermarket support out there from Farmertec 570/575 and Warhawk 576 for piston and cylinder and a few other parts that will interchange from other platforms.

@@craigtimmons3468 I loved my 576 when it was running. Its the smoothest 70cc class saw I've run. Mine had carb issues and finnaly I got the carb sorted out and then a wrist pin let go and took out the piston.. I kimda forgot about it til I ran my buddys 576 a couple weeks ago. Man does that saw have huge power!!!

My first job was as a block packer in a shake and shingle mill, I was13. The only saws at the mill were an 090 and an 070, and that's where I learned to run a chainsaw, to start those beasts I would stand with my right foot in the back handle loop and the toes of my left foot hooked in the handle bar, with both hands on the rip cord, I would stand up using my legs to pull out the cord. You gotta love those big old Stihls.

Hi Tinman!! 😀😀 If you would EVER want to part with that 044 I would love to buy it!! Or maybe you would consider trading it to me for one of my MS 460's. They have both been only ran by me so they are In really good condition. No bent handles or broken plastic. My oldest one has a little paint wear but not much. they have always been my babies. I had a 044 years ago that I bought new and professionally logged with it every day for over 2 years and it never gave me a moment of grief. I still to this day kick my self for ever selling it. But the new 046 came out and it was a fabulous cutting saw and had quite a bit more get up and go to it. I had two of them and ran them hard for a few years and then updated them to the MS 460'S that I have now. I run a tree harvester for a living full time and only cut around 50 face cords of fire wood per year now. At least count I believe I do have 17 saws in my collection. Mostly all Stihl's and a few Chinese clone saws. So far the clones have been a lot of fun to mess with. Especially for the price!!😀😀 Take care my friend!! Logger Al

Comparing chainsaws is like comparing rifles for hunting. It depends more on who is running the saw by how they cut and how they maintain the saw and chain. Almost any rifle will drop a deer, and almost any saw will drop a tree.

The key to my firewood system.... is to have multiple saws and sharp chains..lol

Thats my system also. Bring 3 or 4 saws, cut with one til the chain starts to loose its edge, switch to another and keep going.

My firewood set up ms291 and ms462. I’d love to try a husky but where I live in pa there aren’t many husky dealers. Stihl dealers are on almost every corner.

I really like my Echo 501P. My Stihl 261 was stolen when I left my garage open one night. It was a great saw, but after a small muffler mod, pulling the limiter caps, and retuning, the Echo is right on with the 261

Do a bigger muffler mod - a "real" muffler mod ... it will run even better. I started with a little mod, and it gave it a small bump. Then went back and made the muffler "normal/right" and now it is almost my 2nd favorite saw. It is really light, and not much slower, maybe a few seconds, than a new 555. It is always on my truck, along with a jonsred 2260 (basically a 562), which also really rip. I almost never grab a 70cc saw anymore - but I'm old.

Yes sir it's hard to beat a husky or echo iv cut fire wood since I was 8 with my dad and grandad got my first 272 xp when I was 14 I still run it 20 years later I'm from Texas so we cut hardwood oak. pecan. For bbq joints.

I run a Pro Mac 610 for fire wooding. Boat anchor of a saw.. But man they are tough

I've got a collection of about 50 saws... My go to anymore is my lil Husqvarna 440e with a 20" bar. My backup saws that get thrown in the truck are a lil 37cc Ryobi and a... Sigh.... 62cc coochear Chinese saw... Yeah it's super chinsey but for $109 that 25:1 fuel mix Shure does keep the bugs away 😂

60cc is probably the best class for a one saw do all option, otherwise I like a 50cc 70cc combo personally I run my 026 pro for light stuff, 036 for general falling, a 044 for either running a long bar to buck/stump or real falling.

@@tinmanssaws I work for the National Park Service in the Northwoods doing backcountry trail maintenance and 36x series Stihls are what we use for 95% of our work. Yeah we got 460's, 260's and a 661 for when the job requires it but day in day our a 360 with a 20" or a 25" bar takes care of our woods.

I just go my 630 Jonhson red my dad used it then I used it now giving it to my son

What makes a good firewood saw? Anything I can keep running and sharp 😂🤣

I run a 20 year old 038 farm boss that I run a lot and it has never let me down, all thow it is on the heavy side ......

hard to wait till the end but im sold on the hilti

to add to this list , the 254 / 257 262 family ..... i recently converted a 257 to 262 ... added a pop up piston and ported it and it will easily run with my 272 ... with one exception , i hurt less at the end of the day :D

I am no pro when it comes to saw's by any means and when I did by one it was how it felt in my hands . I bought a 359 husky yrs ago and have not been disappointed. It is 12 or 13 yrs old....would the 359 be a saw to have a builder mess with.....just get a little more out of?

Yep you can turn it into a 357xp if i remember correctly

if you want a new dolmar gas saw find one quick, they stopped making all of the gas saws early this year. p.s. in the usa dolmars are labeled makita. i love my ps6100 with a 24" bar.. excellent german quality.

The older 55 husky is as good as a firewood saw that's ever been built , 359 husky is another good one I still run my 281 XP husky The Best of both worlds.

I run old 660 mag and 2019 395xp everyday on the job, both 32' bars, cutting 5 ft macrocarpa. Lot a weight to cart but still feel I need more power, any ideas mate

I love the 044 I don’t own one my dad has had two but it is top on my list yours that you built is so bad as! But I do have a screaming 661 ported it pulls like a mule! I love that saw but I also have ms 391 It is my first saw and have cut more wood than all my saw put together! I love that saw and is a great firewood saw for 600$ you can’t beat it for a brand new saw! So I am torn about what to do I would love to get it ported but would it be worth it? I no they are not the Pro series saw but I am really curious what kind of power you could get out of it because it still has good power for what it is. I think they are a overlooked saw by a lot of people but it has substantial power! Just curious what do you think Tinman? You think it would be worth porting it? I was lucky Found a MS441 on a facebook bidding page a few years ago. over the mountain about a hour and a half away, depends on who is driving my brother well lest just say half that time almost.. hmm ok maybe about an hours drives.. lol anyways found the ms441 one on the bid page. bid $130 Canadian, didn't think i would win but i did. ask the seller can you deliver(know the person),, ah it supposed to be pickup.. how about 20 bucks delivery charge.. i said fine no problem. So got the saw for $150 bucks. good deal. stupid limiter caps on the carb adjustments.....

You wouldn't happen to have any parts for a Jonsered 2054 turbo would you ? It's pretty old now it was my late Father's saw. 3 weeks ago most of the mature trees on my 18 acres blew down. Then in the stress of everything I ran my saw over broke the chain brake handle off of it, and squished the handle some. It still runs fine, but it broke the top half of the air filter holder and I don't want to risk running it without proper filtration.

In my opinion a ported standard 550 runs out like a stk mark II and a ported mark II runs aaaalmost as good as a stk 562!

I actually have a 2253 jonsered which is a red 550xp and I love that thing

I have 570 made into 576 I only run it on big rounds 20 inch on up so I'm not cutting all day

What about for chainsaw milling lumber? In Manitoba we basically just have pine trees and they aren't that big, would I be okay with a 60cc class?

Your dads saw thats cool as shit. I picked up a super clean little red for $40. I cut wood all year and now I have cs-590 im in oak mostly

What do you think about the Dolmar/Makita 6400 upgraded to the 7900? I've got a dealer right down the road so I'm on the dark side, his service blows any of the local Stihl or Husqvarna dealers out of the water.

I own a Makita 7901, excellent saw, but it has a fragile rewind spool(unless it has been upgraded since I got mine.)

70cc is the best stock size. And any saw that runs/feels like its 70cc.

If I could only have one saw for firewood it would be ms261 all day.

Our mill just bought a 261a few months ago, and that thing will cut like there is no tomorrow , but if I could only have one, it would be an 066! I live in big timber country, and although I can cut little trees with a big saw, I can't cut big trees with a small saw.

I run a 44 magnum and a 1997 Husky 365 and out cut my partner every time we work together because I have that much more power and can just rip it apart.

044 magnum is great saw
