What Living Conditions Are Like For Syrian Refugees In Berlin: VICE News Tonight on HBO

“There is no proper housing, no good life,” a Syrian refugee named Farouk told VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson in Berlin. “There is no good food, no work. Some people have to wait for a year to start learning German. People say it’s our fault, no.”
When the migrant crisis began to overwhelm Europe last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood out for her insistence on opening the country to newcomers. More than a million refugees moved in, and now Merkel’s popularity is waning.
“Our rooms are very cramped,” Farouk said. “No money, nothing that we can build a life with. There is nothing that gives us hope for tomorrow.”

This is also why the reports on the Syrians living in Saudi Arabia describe their accommodations as prison like conditions.

Saudi Arabia took over half a million Syrian Refugees since 2011. But the Refugee contract of Genf which gives the refugees a official status and is working in countries like germany, is not signed by saudi arabia and such states, so for that reason, refugees there have to rely on the goodwill and luck, while with a official status like germany they have rights. And(!) they have the right to complain, because the situation that they are in is inhuman. - You would complain if you were in theyre situation. Everyone would. As i said, inhuman, - noone should live like this, and Germany signed the contract and garantied for the rights and to take care. So the German Goverment is the one to enable the refugees to properly integrate. Educate yourself before you speak up.

Soliman Actually no. I'm not pro or contra this idea, I'm just providing some neutral information. Any household in Germany is welcome to let any refugee move in with them as long as authorities know where to find them. Also there are many registered refugees still living in those camps just because there is a lack of housing. But this does not apply to city owned housing. But even in most small towns there are too many refugees. In mine they are still living in containers.

the sense of entitlement that a lot of these men have (because they are mostly men) is just amazing. like if i was completely new in a country i think i would kind of keep my head down, try to learn the ropes, learn the language, try to not cause any trouble but these men are (a lot of them) the opposite of that. especially the way they treat girls. if western men came down to their countries and acted the way they do towards girls and women their would be public hangings in the streets.

@@stayhungry7166 That's exactly one of the complaints in the video though, is that refugees that WANT to learn the language and enroll in integration classes have to wait over a year and a half before they can even begin. One of the refugees interviewed even said that if Germany can't handle the huge influx of refugees properly, the border should be closed to prevent worsening the situation. That's like the opposite of entitlement.

dude i live in sweden and believe me they complain about a lot more than what you said (also what adequate living standards for a war refugee is could be debated). food for one thing, which is excellent, probably better than what many seniors in nursing homges get, but they dont like it because its unfamiliar to them or whatever. sometimes they complain that they are bored! yes you read right BORED. you can google it yourself there are hundreds of stories of ungrateful immigrants expecting all kinds of stuff and never being satisfied.

Someone should tell Farouk that even though he might not like the food or accommodations what he is getting is coming out of the generosity of the German people. So disrespecting them by these comments is wrong. He would be well advised if he wants to stay in Germany to learn to speak German well & learn a skill that will provide him with work so he can purchase for himself whatever food or accommodations that he requires. The guy who wants a plane ticket back to Syria should be promptly provided with his desire because that will be # 1 what he wants & in the long run save Germans money!

I'm shocked that some of the refugees are not grateful that they have some kind of roof over their head and do not need to live in fear of being bombed or killed. Yes, probably, living conditions are not too great but I am a 100% sure that its better than being in Syria at the moment. Also allow me to share my opinion with you, I believe once Syria is safe and back on its feet, many Syrian refugees will move back to Syria.

A lot of older people stayed in Syria and also women as they mostly would be left alone.. Also the men came here first as it would be a dangerous route to get here and later when they are more settled they would bring their familes

when my family came to the United States as a refugee the transition was great. This was in the early 90's I was a baby. the goverment gave my parents an apartment for 6months.my dad was given resources to help look for a job and learn english. within 2 months he had a job. They set us up with case workers to help us transition to the USA.The community got together to buy them a car. it was wonderful we felt an out poor of love. This is still a common transition people experience here in the states.20 years later my siblings and I are well educated attending medical school and engineering schools. if the transition is done properly it can benefit for all parties.

Open your eyes westerners and stop seeing the world as a place to discover (I mean travelling all around the world and being proud of it) and get rid of this popular culture of welcoming. Protect your race. You westerners have worked hard especially for the past 500 years to become modern nations and you managed to do it. Nobody cares. If Europe and the US hadn't supported the war (rebels)in Syria ,this wouldn't have happened. I should mention Iraq ,Lybia and yemen too. All these wars were directly intervened by NATO, Gaddafi fell by NATO which at his time Lybia was one of the richest countries in Africa, Syria's economy was rapidly growing before the war, the 2 Yemens were reunited and growing as well, Iraq was economally banned, the US invaded them in 2003 and occupied them till 2011, and all this has caused the creation of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Lebanon was occupied by Israel until 2000, and been in a war with them in 2006 ,Al-Qaeda was supported (I think created too) by the US to stop the soviet expanding in central Asia ,and then they decided to invade them to vanish Taliban (al-qaeda) . Not mentioning Vietnam and it's war or African countries which are being stolen by France. All these things caused immigration to Europe, millions were killed thanks to the US and Europe, but still you feel sorry for Europe. Applause.

See what Japan, a member of the UN Refugee treaty, does to the UN-recognized refugees entering JAPAN. Japan LOCKS them up into jail cells for many many years, in so-called detention centres, which are literally jail cells. Many died and it all goes unreported because they have no contact with the outside world. That scares refugees off, which achieves Japan's purpose. Amnesty International repeatedly complains but Japan just ignores it.
