Syrian refugees after 5 years in Germany | DW Documentary

In 2015, the Suleimans fled to Germany from war-torn Syria. How are they faring? Have they managed to build a new life?
While the four Suleiman children have become German citizens - and speak fluent German and have made lots of friends - their parents have had a tougher time fitting in. For four years, the family had to keep moving, until they found a permanent home in Berlin. The children’s father worries about the rest of the family that’s still in Syria. The war there continues to haunt him, so he’s sought psychological help. Their mother is learning German. She hopes that, when her children are a bit older, she can work in Germany as a nurse. The Suleimans are happy to be in Germany, even if it’s taken longer for them to settle in than they’d hoped. A report by Viktoria Kleber.

    @Kattos _ No, I tried to learn it. It's more difficult. Maybe not the grammar because from the structure it's a neanderthal language due to it's lack of the Form of "to be". It's for example not "I am hungry", it's "I hungry". But then you have to learn the correct pronunciation and another alphabet as well.

    what i dont get is this ; there has been trouble in syria for a long time then why do people have children and even several instead to wait till trouble is over . also it said they decided to go abroad to germany to give the children a better life . maybe not first of all due to trouble . they landed in turkey and he said they have friends there so why did this family not stay in turkey as well ? must have thought germany is better but still many complaints . it is totally different than syria they must have known . und muessten sehr froh sein was sie haben da die steuern wo die buerger zahlen ihnen helfen . viele deutsche leben auf der strasse wie ueberall yesterday i saw a docu . a mr frank has a small circus but he had to close it due to c19 hence no earnings for ages now . he and his wife cant pay for their health insurance and they want 200 000 euro . mr frank had a heart attack - diabetic etc . thats how their own are treated and he is not a youngish person . the reporter spoke to this authority and things will hopefully get sorted . mr f goes to a klinik where it is free because he has loads of meds and cant also afford them . the goverment closed everything and the people are in huge money difficulties not their fault . we all need to be kind and help where possible but goverments neglecting their own people ( rather help outsiders ) even the ones that paid into the system is just disgusting

She spoke perfect German and English and came on the same conditions as her husband, the only difference was him being ethnically German and her being Russian. She had worked in that country for 10 years till she had some serious health problems and now she can't even claim retirement payment and has to rely on her husband. She deeply regretted going there but it was too late to unroot and go back, the children spoke little Russian and the husband didn't want that of course.

And, nobody is paying them extra money when they have more children as it is in Germany.Half of the Syria lives in Turkey and with this birth rate , their numbers are increasing exponentially. At first, I felt really sorry for these people. But when you they just have children without thinking, I don't feel sorry anymore. They are just making the problem bigger then it already is. Life has become quite difficult for avarage Turkish people with decent jobs in recent years. So you can guess that life is pretty hard for Syrian refugees in Turkey. But still , they are having children like there is no tomorrow.I really don't understand these people and any people who have children when you are in a situation like this.

    I worked with two refugees during my apprenticeship. One of them was Syrian, he came to Germany also around 5 years ago at the age of 30, with his wife and two kids. That guy worked day and night, it was crazy. After only two years, he moved out of his government-paid apartment, rented and fully renovated an entire house using nothing but his salary from the apprenticeship and small jobs around the city. And he managed to get along with everybody in a way that still impresses me today. Being trapped in refugee camps with thousands of others in a confined space before coming here apparently causes a tranquility when dealing with the inherently meaningless conflicts of german daily life, so this man seemed to be on top of every situation without ever breaking a sweat. There is a lot of value in having people like him around. People who actually recognize the importance of a peaceful life the way he did, something that is too often neglected nowadays by Germans who just want to feel like they are the victim of someone. He doesn't take anything for granted, and that's a huge driving factor many people who are born here lack.

    How do you apply to become a refugee? This is now my career goal... 🤯

  • @swanpride

    @swanpride

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well, first step is that someone has to bomb your home country. Then you have to take whatever you can carry and march into the next country. Where they will tell you that you are not wanted, but you are "free" to spend the rest of your live in a refugee camp. But if you are lucky, you still have a little bit of money. Invest all of it in a people smuggler and hope, that he will not betray or accidentally kill you. Then go on a riggy boat and make a journey over the ocean a lot of people didn't survive. If you are lucky enough to make it to the other side, you can either spend even more time in a camp, hoping that you will be allowed to travel along, or you dodge the authorities and march (by foot) all the way up to northern Europe. Then spend the rest of your living fearing that the government of whatever country you ended up in deems your home land save enough, which will lead to you getting send back after all the efford. Be welcome to try it.

    Jesus this comment section is so toxic. "They lived there for 5 years and cannot speak german" -> if you could listen, they all do speak german. The kids speak ist almost perfectly. "Why dont they have a job after 5 years?" -> believe it or not but it is not that easy as a refugee to even get a working permit and depending on the city you live in there aren't many companies who hire refugees. Not mentioning traumas and psychological problems many refugees have, making it really hard for them to be able to work. "Why do they have so many kids than?" -> The first three kids were born in Syria, the last kid was born in germany but she was probably pregnant before they came to germany. Moreover is it really common in eastern countries to have four or more children. And to be honest its not like four is a incredible high number. "Germany will regret it" -> let me think ... well I guess no. Young children are the best germany could hoped for. Germany needs a lot more children to support the elders in the future and germany needs many people who want to do the "bad" jobs. I feel like mostly Americans who have no idea whatsoever think they know exactly who "bad" refugees are for germany and want to talk bad about them because they are plain racist and intolerant. I really hope some of those toxic people experience what those families experienced and are still experiencing. And if someone is asking, yes I would rather give my tax money to family like them than to Trump and his complete mess of a country.

They usually transition into our regular classes after one year (sometimes it takes longer). Many (not all) of them bring a new quality to their new regular class. Often, they are more focussed, organised and take their education more serious. And yes, some of them fail in our system, often because of unresolved trauma or because of a lack of family support (we do have some kids who have lost their family on their way and are now in the care system, for some of them the family roles have been turned on their heads since children and youths often have an easier time adapting to new surroundings). When they fail it's heartbreaking.
