What It Was Like to Be a Roman Slave

Ойын-сауық

Slave labor was a huge aspect of Roman life and the Republic depended heavily on free work from human beings who had no rights, no possessions, and were left at the whims of their masters to be worked to death, starved, tortured, and sometimes even killed for the sake of enjoyment.
Sure, you may have seen Russell Crowe play one in a movie, but chances are you have no idea just how brutal it really was.
Today we’re exploring what it was really like to be a Roman slave.

I get a pair every year, generally one and I've had the same pair of winter boots for 5. I know that I'm not on my feet as much as a slave, but you know 13 hrs a day between work and play. I could make a pair work every two years but it would suck, as I believe being a slave would. I agree with the heart of your statement.

I think that the shoes would become kinda useless after some time due to the slaves walking so much. But we, today, can wear a pair of shoes for 2 years too. The difference is that we have the opportunity and the privilege to buy another pair anytime. My shoes are hurting my feet? I can go and buy a comfortable one. The slaves couldn't. That's the difference I think

I think this idea of taking the people worst off back then and comparing to people that are well off now is a flawed comparison. Lets compare the emperor of Rome to the president. Lets compare the senators of rome to the congress and senators of today. What about comparing the life for soldiers back then and with now. I would say there is very little difference in these regards.

people should really understand what slavery actually is. It implies another person owns you, can sell you and controls your entire life, including your personal time which you would not have any. While we can talk about labor rights, equating that to slavery does disservice to your arguments because it is laughably out of touch. Spartacus is definitely my spirit being. How do I know this you ask? Well! It was many moons ago. When I was still just a wee lad. Attending high-school. I failed my math test on a crisp spring morning. At first I thought all was lost. That I would grow up to be a peasant... Losing call of duty matches every single day. And living with my mom at the age of 35. Yes... All did look bleak as hell. But then I remembered! Spartacus! He wouldn't give up in this final hour. The hour when I needed to triumph more than ever! So went back to school. Asked for the test back. Took up my mighty pen and ruler. And proceeded to never. Give. Up. I spent 15 grueling minutes finishing that math test. And I knew Spartacus was looking down on me... Pleased with my ferverlous attitude. And that ladies and gentlemen. Is how I know Spartacus is my spirit being. The tenacity to never give up. Even in the face of almost certain defeat with a 20 minute math test. But I prevailed. And I stand before you today not as a man who lives with his mother. No. But as a man who lives with his dad instead. Thank you Spartacus.

Historical Fact: Slaves and women played an important part in Rome’s acceptance of Christianity. Being the “less fortunate” in the Roman society, slaves and women found a great solace in the sufferings of Jesus Edit: I read this in the historian Frank McLynn's biography about Marcus Aurelius, a.k.a. the philosopher king of Roman Empire. I'm neither a Christian nor a religious person. It's a great book, I highly recommend.

very true. The estate system of the Romans became the feudal serfdom. The lords nobles, kings and queens had lineage from mainly roman elders, the church in the east and west also had roman heirarchy. the arabs conquered former roman areas only to advance many things such as better treatment of slaves. However I cannot see a roman wanting to flog their slaves as a healthy slave meant more productivity.

Maybe in the beginning. But, what gave Spartacus an edge, initially, was that the Romans didn't take him seriously. The first few Roman "armies" sent against him were inexperienced and ill equipped, more like police forces. After, Spartacus' army were done in by their own deluded lust. They had made it to the Alps and could have left Italy, but chose to turn back, thinking they could defeat a real Roman army.

It’s like how certain areas allow you to kill wild boar even without a hunting license cause there is so many and they’re not liked lol. Gladiators did die, but rare. This why the emperors would be pissed and have to either train or preserve their other ones. Slaves did become gladiators and had to fight towards freedom. Depends how well you were liked. If you were a gladiator that wasn’t well liked? Yea you probably got tossed in the arena with some vicious criminals that the emperor knew could take your head off.

A little brown man defeated them by embarrassing them out of India. Oh, and then there was these 13 Colonies....well, I guess they're just an extension of the British Empire. Same language....same colors on their flags...architecture...identical urban planning...the song "America"="God save the Queen"...same religion....'English as Apple pie' (originated in England)..same Imperious attitude...etc., etc., etc. Americans are like those embarrassing, yokel country cousins to the English; gauche, crude and déclassé". But their shooting prowess and boorish rowdiness sure comes in handy when you have to deal with those nasty, hostile neighbours, the Krauts. All which leads to the point that on TWO (2) occasions, the British WOULD have lost wars and been WIPED OUT, if it hadn't being for those (im)pertinent Americans COMING TO THEIR RESCUE.

The Egyptian's built the pyramids using a system of complex pulleys and sheer manpower with slave labor. Stop thinking ancient humans were stupid, they were actually highly intelligent for their time period when it came to construction. Architecture was still a profession even back then, and without machines to help guide them, they had to make sure everything was precise and going to design, IE, they paid extra close attention to their craftsmanship and guided the builders every step of the way.

Great video!!! I love the narrative and all the visual aids. Could have mentioned, though, how the early Christian faith in the first century AD considered salves to be equal in status to a free, Roman citizen. The apostle Paul mentioned how in God’s eyes, every man and woman stands on the same level when it comes to human rights. (Colossians 3:11, Galatians 3:28) Taking into account that these beliefs were born in a century where slavery was the norm is very impressive!
