You'd be surprised a lot of Game of Thrones is based on or inspired by real history. One for example The War of the Roses. Stark = York and Lannister = Lancaster. The Red Wedding was based on The Glencoe Massacre and the Black Dinner in Scotland.

Meh. Way too into romanticizing things for my tastes. Not enough fact - too much speculation.

"He would have been horrified to hear us calling him Caligula" OMG I can't believe Caligula doesn't want us to call him Caligula! So funny because all of us call him Caligula. This documentary on Caligula was really good at teaching me about Caligula though. It helped me learn so much about Caligula. Before I learned about Caligula I had only a small knowledge of Caligula. But now I am educated about Caligula. Caligula.

Luis Ferreira though it surprises me how more of these people including her don’t realize that Caligula was obviously the victim of a massive smear campaign to cover up his assassination. None of these stories of sadism and perversion are credible. What we have is one history written by the assassins. Then on the other hand the people loved him. Obviously we have no idea who Caligula really was. It’s the same with all these Roman emperors, we have no idea who they really were; all we have is propaganda for good and bad.

I don't think the History Channel ever deserved the title of "history". My earliest memories of the History Channel was nonstop sensationalist and almost fetishization of the battles of WWII. We called it The War Channel.

Definitely….before the History channel became a historian revisionist. Rewrite history….most of it false…

About 17 years ago my wife was pregnant with my son. Another female coworker was also pregnant. I walked into the office at work one day. She asked me, “have you thought of a name for your baby?” I responded (with a straight face) “I think we’ve settled on Caligula!” She looked at me in absolute horror. 🤣 I then broke character and told her I was just joking. I don’t think she enjoyed the joke as well as I did.

Mary is an engaging scholar of ancient Rome. Her concluding remarks make sense. It was more the power structure that made Caligua, rather than the other way around. The power structure remained in place after Caligua's assassination, leading to futher power abuses under future compromised and corrupt Roman emperors (Nero, Commodus, and so on). Many of those were also assassinated.

It took me a while to understand why this documentary was so much more captivating. I realized that it was not the fascinating subject matter alone, but the hostess and her amazing story-telling is what augmented this.

I really can't stand her. From those ugly filthy nails, that gray palette hair...etc. However she is a good historian and most of all a great story teller. But I can't stand her and BoJo as well. Can't believe that douche is PM.... If Italians would know some English and be more pushy they should be lecturing people on Roman history, not the British....

Mary Beard is top notch.Went to see her give a talk and she engaged the audience with her depth of knowledge and good humour.A very enjoyable time.Big fan.

How is it possible that 1600 people didn't like this? Mary Beard is an awesome historian and teacher. You almost have to be brain dead not to like her documentaries.

I would have loved to have Mary Beard as a professor. She really goes into depth and details.

@Peter Grahame I'm by no means a "Low brow Munchkin." I am very well educated and I can tell when a professor is or isn't an engaging and well-read individual. She is not dull/mediocre. She seems fun. I've had my fair share of un-engaging and dull, ill-equipped professors leaving me yawning with boredom. She knows what she's doing. She's lively and has a vitality that isn't yawn worthy.

Such a historical pity that both of Augustus' chosen heirs had died which left Augustus with no alternative other than Tiberius. Equally, that Germanicus died, who was seen as the perfect role model of a true Roman citizen, even more beloved than the Emperor was, and was surely destined to become a fantastic emperor, one of Rome's best without a doubt. Crazy to think how the Roman Empire would have evolved under these different, worthy successors to Augustus. He must have been rolling in his grave with everyone until Vespasian.

The best gift you can give a student is to make the lesson immediate, and contemporary. Mary Beard does that in an engaging way. And viewers lean in and listen, gladly..

There is a much better film on Netflix called the Roman Empire with a few episodes on Caligula.

This is the second video on Roman History being narrated by Mary Board I've watched and the manner in which she narrates their history is amazing. She explains history inspires the viewer to research the material themselves but also causes the viewer to think. To contemplate.

I love the unbridled passion that your presenters have...retelling the details with such joy in voice, of sharing, reliving the history, events's and people... They just pull you into their world of wonder, mystery and excitement...it is a joy!

I really appreciate Mary Beard and her diving into the lifestyle of the Ancients. Not just surface information, but true sail life research. She also has an excellent narration style that is easy on the ears and simple to understand.

Mary Beard is such a fine documentary producer. A master of the form.

I've been out of school for many years and it was only in my mid twenties that I became interested in History of all kinds. Read an awful of books and watched too many documentaries. Mary Beard is great 👍

@@chrisholland7367 Cris I tend 2 agree with u. It's much easier to absorb info. when not distracted by ur classmates and hormones. Although I was in accelerated classes, what was known as phase 4 level, I was bored 2 tears spending most of my time in the Library. I repeated the 9th grade 3xs because I just went in the front door and out the back, if I did go it was always my science classes. Try sneaking back onto campus. ; ) Long story short I ended up having a very successful college career and graduated with honors. There is hope 4 all of us out of High School. LOL

I found Mary Beard and now I can't stop learning and listening to her bring history to life!!! I love her laugh, smile, sass, untamed long hair, her voice that is all hers and the fiery spirit that she uses to tell the tales. . .:)!!!

Is it weird that I like to fall asleep, listening to Mary Beard? Her storytelling is comforting.

If I'd had Mary as a professor I'd have learned much more, her presentation is excellent

The saying "Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you." comes to mind then hearing about his story.

I just LOVE Mary Beards' documentaries: They show just how much she loves her speciality - AND she imparts her deep knowledge to us ("the masses") so well!! Great stuff Professor!! 😊👍

She’s amazing! I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries with her she goes deep in depth.

I love how excited Mary Beard is when sharing history with her audience. Absolutely brilliant.

Just so everyone knows, Mary has a new book out called "Twelve Caesars". I haven't read it yet, myself, but I do own her other books, "SPQR", and have seen everything she's a part of on KZread. So, with all that in mind, I can safely tell you to buy the new book.

What makes this particular history documentary so good? No cheesy "re-enactments".

I would love to travel to Italy with Dr. Beard as my “tour guide.”

Necroglobule it is much rarer to use gloves to handle old documents nowadays. The natural oils present in human skin are actually good for animal skin-based documents such as vellum and parchment, and you are more likely to damage old documents with gloves on as you haven’t got the same sensitivity of touch. You can get dirt and dust on gloves just the same as hands, too.

there is a fabulous documentary that was on tv in the UK earlier this year where she was bootling about Italy in an open top sports car. I love her.

Absolutely brilliant historian, Mary Beard. Her knowledge is astounding, her documentaries riveting.

I could literally listen to miss professor Mary Beard talk about anything history. She is truly genius!

Capri sounds like a terrifying place to be in Caligula's time, but it's visually stunning, and I'd love to visit it.

Ms. Beard is a Beast. She is so enthralled and fascinated by the subject, that it is her very enthusiasm which draws you in, and then her knowledge and editing that hooks you. Great stuff, really great stuff

I have to say that unlike sooo many other history-story-tellers here in KZread, Professor Mary Beard is a highly competent and skilled story-teller, because she does it in a way that one actually wants to listen, find it interesting and watching to the end. It is also very clear that she knows what she's talking about and she does it with ease and passion at the same time. I subscribed and liked and will see if I can find more narratived by her.

Is there anything more British than Mary Beard strolling about radiantly sunny Italy in a raincoat?

You don’t need to be a university scholar to understand and appreciate Mary Beard’s narrations. Her wandering off the main line frequently is a path to further information and discovery. Poor Caligula was raised in a violent time by an ambitious and war loving father and a cold power hungry mother. Poor guy didn’t have a chance to be normal.

"ambitious and war loving father"? If anything the sources depict him as the opposite. When Tiberius came to power and a mutiny of the legions occurred they tried to give Germanicus the role of emperor instead, to which he literally took out his sword and threatened to kill himself rather than betray Tiberius. It is clear by the honours and powers that Tiberius bestowed on Germanicus that he trusted him, judging from the sources he was an honourable man and loved deeply by the people. "cold power hungry mother"? Agrippina is one of the only females in the imperial family that Tacitus doesn't go in to detail about how cruel and power hungry they are, and that is saying something as Tacitus takes ANY opportunity to bring up rumours of women manipulating things and killing people. As far as the sources and evidence go both of Caligula's parents were loved by the people and honourable examples in deeply troubled times. Unless you are referencing some cynical modern historian's perspective who sides with Tiberius and claims all of his victims were secretly enemies then I don't know where you got these notions of Germanicus and Agrippina.

What a wonderful documentary on Caligula. It really makes you wonder, had you been brought up in such a barbaric fashion, would you have turned out so different? I’d wager, you would not. Nurture versus nature most times they go hand and hand Bravo Mary Beard and Timeline for bringing Caligula’s story to life 💞🙏🏻

If we were all brought up the same way as Caligula, then we would be Caligula, no? So, u pointed out the obvious. This lady did not even mention any of Caligula's laws he made. No mention of any legislation and WHY they murdered him. She says the people liked Caligula, but gives no reasons at all for this- nor backs it up with any evidence. It's LACKING

Great documentary. Amazing that the statues always seem to depict the emperors with wavy boyish hair no matter their age, even if they were a lot older than Caligula. I suppose the emperors always had to be pleased with the final result or the sculptor would be found at the bottom of a cliff somewhere.

Absolutely agree. The ancient version of Photoshop. Michelangelo was said to have done the same thing with the Medici statues - making them look much more handsome and buff than the real counterparts.

Sometimes, I just wonder if Caligula might not have been such a bad guy. In truth we may never know for certain. After all his enemies were hardly going to write glowing accounts of him for the history books.

@@vilwarin5635 I don't know if Caligula had any grand plans for national improvements. The thing was, he offended the aristocracy and that's why he was murdered. The Roman aristocracy wasn't noted for its democratic ideals. They didn't mind a despot if he was *their* despot. Caligula was a loose cannon, too uncontrollable for them.

History is written by the winner in battle and the rich and powerful.Always has been,always will be.Her presentation and her vast knowledge of the subject is what makes it "come to life" as well as the use of brilliant C.G.I. and visual display to capture the imagination of even the most distracted listener.

Mary Beard is to Ancient History what David Attenborough is to nature. What David Starkey and Lucy Worsley are to British History All four are British national treasures. Makes me proud to be Canadian and part of the Commonwealth.

I am American and I maybe daft but I wish we had lost Revolutionary War. As my hero Winston Churchill said the English speaking peoples. I too feel that I am a part of the Empire. I wanted to teach English but failed to get my Doctorate. History is not boring if taught with the passion of Miss Beard.

Always love a Roman documentary with Mary Beard hosting. Caligula really was some piece of work. Not sure who was worse--Caligula or Nero. Ancient Rome is a fascinating subject and Mary Beard brings it to life for me.

This is my 4th time watching this episode and I still stifle a giggle hearing “Emperor Dittums”. Love it.

Rome fascinates me so much, I first visited this city in 2011 then in 2013 and finally in 2017. To this day I have not fully explored the city. I love it's intermingling of ancient history in the middle of modern life, just simply amazing. I always say that back home in America we see history behind glass or displays, Rome is an open air museum of a city with so much transcendental history even to the US. I stayed really close to Horti Lamiani in 2011 and walked in this park not knowing completely its history. Thanks #Timeline-WorldHistoryDocumentaries.

Having read some of Mary Beard's books, it was good to hear her voice and see her. One has to wonder how much of Caligula was psychopathy and how much was absolutist power politics.

Mary Mary, Mary! She makes even the most historically challenged person want to know more. She is a wonderful historian. I spent 3 weeks in Italy. Wish I could followed her around. I see that I missed so much! : - (

Dr. Beard is so good, explains things well, so expressive. I love her lessons. I love watching her share her knowledge.

I see. So now everything that was said about " little Boots 👢 " were Baseless rumors 🙄. Just because you're enemies wrote about you doesn't mean they only wrote lies and rumors. Also all rumors aren't lies...many ( if not most) have a bases in truth. And finally, what if we suppose that the main reason that only you're enemies wrote about a particular person is because they had Slain all their friends? After all...when a psycopothy becomes emperor and is finally done with his killings...who is left? Who indeed?
