What it's REALLY like to ROAD TRIP a TESLA model y...(NOT WHAT WE THOUGHT!)

This is our first ever road trip in our new Tesla and we had some serious concerns about our seven and a half hour trip. In this video we document what it is like first hand to travel in this fully electric whip. Thanks for watching!

One of the biggest advantages of an EV, aside from fuel savings, is maintenance costs. I've owned a Nissan Leaf for 9 years now. During that time period my only maintenance was tire replacement, 12v battery replacement, and wiper blades. That's it! My average cost of charging the car at home (living in TX) is $20 a month. Compare those costs to a regular combustion engine car.

FYI you get a faster charging session if you plug in around 10% and charge to around 70%. Which should be about 20 minutes in most Teslas. Doesn't matter in this case since you went in to eat anyway. Either way will work but that minimizes time spent charging, if you can space out the chargers accordingly. Also lets you speed up to get to the next charger faster, if you're going to get there with more than 10%. Even 5% is ok once you learn to time it.

Welcome to Tesla road tripping. We have been making road trips in our ‘18 RWD Model 3. Delivery day was a 250 mile drive after signing paperwork. It was pretty easy then and is really easy now. Enjoy your car! You have a lot to learn. 🙂

Your very brave going that far and never having supercharged! My first time (a few months ago, model Y/Long Range) I went to a station 5 miles from our house and did a 5-minute charge as a test. Then my next trip was 320 miles round trip to visit my wife's family with only 1 short charge on the way back. I took baby steps.

I really wanted to prove wether you could just hop in an EV and go on a road trip just like a gas car. It was surprisingly easy and now I fully trust in the Tesla supercharger network. The closest charger to our place is over an hour and a half away so we were going on faith that the network would be reliable!

We did a three-week, 6,300-mile road trip from Dallas, TX through Michigan, into Canada to Jasper, AB. Then down to Denver and on to Dallas. Cost of charging for the entire trip was $780. Would love it if Superchargers were available to National Parks, such as Big Bend in Texas or Glacier in Montana. Was a bit surprised at the overnight power loss. Since we were camping some nights, we bought the Tesla Mobile Charger. Most campsites with power have 110 and 30 Amp 30TT plugs. The Tesla Mobile Charger does not have a 30TT adapter. We bought the 30TT to 14-50 adapter, but the Mobile Charger would not recognize the power (i.e., would not charge). We call Tesla support but the Tesla support just stated that they did not have a part number for the adapter from 30TT to the Mobile Charger. We were able to supercharge with no problem, just skipped the National Parks this trip.

That's good to know about some of the campsites! You went all out wow 6300 miles?! Hopefully Tesla will produce more charging adapter options. I was surprised at how easy it was to use the superchargers and how reliable navigation was about the condition of the charging stations.

Keep in mind the range estimate is just that an estimate, and may fluctuate with varying or unexpected driving conditions. It is not a promise per se. Once you get more used to the vehicle you be able to relax about all of that range stuff and just enjoy the car.

Totally agree speed has the biggest impact on range, also faster to stay in the bottom 70% of the battery, once you pass 70% the charge speed slows way down,

Great video and welcome to the world of Tesla ! Yes, all others EV are great and sometimes better, but the Supercharging network that Tesla has put in place is unbeatable ! Now, some of things you should know : - range is dependent on the 3 T : > terrain (elevation and surface) > temperature (outside and inside the car) > technic of driving (speed and acceleration) Over the 3 elements, you only can control the speed/acceleration. So, when you see the navigation telling you that you may not reach the destination, lower the speed and you'll make it. But Tesla will tell you all these. Don't need to know it from the start. Also, you don't need to charge to 80%. Tesla is a very efficient car so only charge to the % you are good with. Usually Tesla tells you that for getting to the next charger you need to charge x minutes. These x minutes are based on the % at arrival, usually 10% or more. If you aren't comfortable with the 10%, charge a little more up to what you think is reassuring for you. But keep in mind, charging from 10% to 25% takes about 3 minutes. Charging from 25 to 50% takes about 5 minutes. So better arrive at the destination with a lower state of charge than a higher one.

Tesla superchargers have cheaper rates after 10 pm or 12 pm. One factor you might want to mention too. Like some stations go as low as .11$ per kw but in the day time charges 40-50 cents.

Yeah those Buc-ee’s are insane! We charged at one in Temple, Tx (north of Austin) that had 48 V3 chargers and they were packed with Tesla’s. A lot of Tesla’s in and around Austin for some reason 😀 Curious about your efficiency in wh/mile because when we travel from KC to Denver and back it’s about 12-1300 miles and our supercharger cost is about $150. And that’s excluding leaving the house with basically a full cheap charge. I’m thinking that maybe our $/kw is higher- I’ve seen it at .46c/kw, so that might account for the difference. It’s still way better than the MDX we used to take on that trip. We’d spend between $350 and $500 on premium gas for that beast. Anyway, great video and thanks for taking us along for the ride!

I haven't done the breakdown on the wh/mile side of things but I think the most expensive charger we hit was 0.36/kwh at that very Bucees actually. I would assume as well that that makes the difference in cost between our two trips. Definitely saved versus our Subaru and quite frankly I enjoy the Tesla driving experience way more!

Nice video - why did you choose Tesla MYLR vs other options out there like say the Mach E or ID4 or EV6?

  • @BoondockTesla

    @BoondockTesla

    9 ай бұрын

Tesla has the longest track record (10 years fully EV) and the best DC fast charging infrastructure in the world. I have had family members who owned the Mach - e and sold it within 2 months to buy a Tesla MYP simply because the 2nd party charging network was completely unreliable. Some chargers were down or at half capacity. He also used an app called plugshare that claimed there were charging stalls that were open and they hadn't been built yet almost leaving his family nearly stranded on a recent roadtrip. The Tesla app is flawless and won't make those type of mistakes. Also legacy automakers started with ICE designs and that's their specialty. Tesla was totally EV from the ground up. I did a full video on why I feel Tesla is the best when it comes to jumping to an EV. I leave a link for it down below. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2xpya2MYpbMqqQ.html

@@BoondockTesla That charging network issue will go away or compound the Tesla network availability in the Spring next year when those partnerships roll out. I have to agree on the infrastructure - it still has a way to go even for Tesla as far as availability and reach - especially in areas like WV or more rural routes. I love a lot of features of the Tesla line- I just want my instruments cluster behind the wheel and don’t like that the interior is so minimalist as well as they are SO MANY out there. I did rent one from TURO when I was in San Diego this summer. Thought the ride was a bit rough and the car a but noisy from the road. Thank you for your input though.

@@RichardYoungCF yes Tesla has the best charging network……..i hope you do know that -yes, they are opening the charging infrastructure to other brands…. However, they will still designate chargers strictly for their own!! I have had my LRMY over a year & i am very happy with it!! I have made one road trip…. Miami to Orlando to visit my son…..what i didnt realize is that the supercharger fees do change…..if you charge before 12p it may be at 23cents/kWh…..after 12 it might go up to 44cents/kWh! It depends on your location…..it cost me $15 to get to Orlando…..and $25 to get back since i left at a later time….. the best thing about my tesla is the tech!! I drove my friends MachE……i wasn’t impressed…. Overall….Tesla just gets it right & they are always continually improving…. Its like an iphone with wheels….. with my PC, i always felt i needed to upgrade! But with myMac, it always feels brand new….

In our experience we found location of the superchargers often has a big impact on price. One supercharger we hit in Spartenburg, SC at a Burger King had a cost of $0.31 per kwh versus the one in Florence, SC at a Buc-ees which was $0.36 per kwh. The on-board navigation offers detailed specifications about the chargers at each location including price so you could change your route to save money on charging as well. I am in the process of making an in depth video on superchargers coming out in the next few weeks.

Here in the Northeast, it's pretty much a flat rate 40 cents/kWh so you don't save much. I've seen other parts of the country where they charge different rates based on peak/off-peak. In southern California, they have charge rates of 25 cents per kWh with gas costing around $6/gallon! No wonder they're all buying Teslas out there.

Thanks for the information. I think fully electric cars strong point, is as a everyday car, not so much as a road trip car. We are told not to let the car get below 10% charge, we are told to only charge to 80%, and we are told that air conditioning and heating will drastically affect your mileage. Given this information at 80 mph it looks like I will be charging for 30 minutes every 2 to 2 1/2 hours of drive time. I can drive from Sacramento to Las Vegas in about 8 1/2 hours with very limited stops for gasoline. The distance is about 600 miles. The realistic stops for a Tesla will add about 2 hours. Will I save money electric vs gas? Yes, but I will spend more just by waiting and eating junk food. There is also some very questionable locations where these electric chargers are located. I have even seen some people urinating near chargers because there were no bathrooms nearby. I will stick to my plug-in hybrid as my combination everyday driver and road trip vehicle.
