What it's like to wear Boeing's Space Suit

Ғылым және технология

I’ve owned my horrendously smelly and well worn Russian High Altitude flight suit since 2013… Why did I buy it? I have no idea… after it almost killed me, I still continued to take it around the world with me to take whimsical photographs. And now, it’s basically the bane of my existence.
And although I have a love/hate relationship with this stupid thing, I do question how well it would work in the event of sudden spontaneous decompression… So, I think it’s time I check out a REAL space suit, try it on, and see if it’s worth hanging up the old orange suit for something.. A little more… blue…
Check out my article all about what it's like to train with the Boeing CST-100 Starliner and wear their incredible space suit! everydayastronaut.com/boeing-...

    @@scottwa looks like a simplified drysuit. Bam, I got Resource Integration Gear. Then, all that will be needed is stuff for micrometeorite protection, solar radiation protection, and some extra survival gear like SOS beacons and emergency oxygen, and we have an EVA suit that can be mass produced.

That would depend on how they are constructed, but it should be able to put knuckle guard plates and other reinforcements on it without losing much dexterity.

    First time being on your channel. Was in my recommendations. I have now subbed. You brought out the armchair astronaut in me. I have followed the orbiter from 1980. I would ditch school to watch launches in tv Actually went into school crying after watching the Challenger explosion. Everyone thought i was mad. I finally got to see Discovery launch in 2008. I timed my family holiday around it. From now on gonna live vicariously through you. Greetings from London England.

Shame they didn't get someone to assist you with putting it on with a bit more excitement and humour, but we can't get everything we want I guess :P Its nice that the big companies like this are willing to give you the time and even make the small touches like the everyday astronaut badge. I think if you can just keep doing what you're doing, many more cool opportunities will continue to open up for you.

    Soyuz spacecraft suit Sokol is used only when there is an action going on. Like launching, docking, undocking and landing. They take it off after reaching orbit and pressure check. The spacecraft has a toilet in its living compartment. Lately Soyuz spacecrafts can reach ISS in around 6 hours. Last Progress spacecraft (unmanned cargo version of Soyuz) reached ISS just under 4 hours, which is the new record!

  • @MsSomeonenew

    Two days is the emergency procedure, if your flight hasn't gone as planned. Normally they only expect a couple of hours, and because of that they rely on diapers. A luxury trip this is not.

    3.5 psi is the partial pressure of oxygen at 10,000 ft elevation. The absolute pressure at 10,000 ft is around 10 psi. The spacesuit is normally 100% oxygen environment at lower pressure in order to reduce the pressure differential but still allow the astronaut to get all the oxygen they need to function.

    If anything, 3.5 PSI pure oxygen seems a little low; didn't they use closer to 4 PSI on Apollo? IIRC, the slightly elevated pressure was to prevent bleeding from the lungs, and not because we need to breathe that much oxygen. Is the difference because the Boeing suits would only be used for a short time? I guess they didn't let him try the suit under positive pressure; it would be interesting to see how awkward it is to move under those conditions.

  • @johnnukecop
    @johnnukecop5 жыл бұрын

    The flexibility and apparent comfort of the suit is amazing. I do think the blue color is a mistake. The pumpkin suit was that color at least in part, to make the wearer easily visible in an emergency recovery situation. If the crew does a pad abort with a landing in the water, blue will make it tougher for rescuers looking for crew that might be in the water. Thanks for a great video.
