What It's Like To Try Kava - The National Drink Of Fiji

Ғылым және технология

A trip to Fiji isn't complete without some kava, the country's national drink. Known in Fijian as yaqona, or by its colonial nickname "grog," kava is a muddy, earthy beverage that calms you and numbs your mouth and throat.

Watching this brings me back to my summer mission trip to Fiji in 2017. Every night we would sit in a circle with out Fijian families and drink kava, dance, and song. It was the best days of my life and Fiji will always have a high place in my heart. Bula!

For you noobs, always have this before food on an empty stomach, food nullifies the effects big time...like beer its best at the end of the day after a hard days work it absorbs into your bloodstream alot quicker, if you don't feel numbness around the mouth after your second to third cup it isn't strong enough, if you feel numbness straight after the first cup means your drinking with Fijians.

Ayahuasca? Not at all, that's a serotonergic psychedelic, totally different. Kava's effects resemble those of drugs like alcohol or anxiolytics, as it is a depressant. What's interesting about this drink is that it has many active compounds, some of them interact with gaba receptors (like alcohol and benzodiazepines), some are reuptake inhibitors of noradrenaline or mao inhibitiors (which increase dopamine), and apparently one of them has cannabinoid activity. All of them contribute to its unique effect.

I have taken it for anxiety before and I found it quite helpful. It is the only relaxant I have ever found that works and is not physically addictive. Alcohol, benzos, phenibut, etc. They are all very dangerously addictive and can have horrible withdrawal. But not kava. However, you need to be picky about where you get it from and in what form. I highly recommend to not mess with any supplements or extracts. Buy the root powder and make it as a drink the normal way. And get it from a well-respected supplier such as Nakamal At Home or a similar site. I get mine from the former.

"Peppery" is how I'd describe it. If it's well mixed and closer to room temperature, it's pretty ok. It's a nice buzzy sensation. Terrific for unwinding. LIke a very mild marijuana high but not goofy. I wouldn't compare it to booze. I almost want to say "caffeine but relaxing."
